How do I get a fishing rod?
After you get your tent and sleep for the first time, talk to Tom Nook. He will show you the workbench and give you crafting instructions for the wiggle fishing rod. Collect five branches to make it. Branches are located in front of trees on the ground. Shake the trees to make more branches fall down.
Another way to get a fishing rod is to buy it through Nepp. He offers the fishing rod for sale along with some other tools. However, it is more efficient to make your own fishing rod and save the staris. A wiggle fishing rod will break after several times of use. Therefore, save Nook miles for the "Everyday Tools A to Z".
This will give you more building instructions, including a more stable fishing rod by upgrading the Wiggle Fishing Rod. This requires iron ore, which you knock out of stones with the shovel. The new fishing rod will last longer, but will not provide better fishing results.
How does fishing work?
- Look into a body of water and look for shadows in the shape of fish.
- Cast the fishing rod with the A button so that the float lands in front of the fish.
- As soon as the fish spots the float, it approaches it and nibbles carefully at the hook.
- When it bites, it pulls the float under water. While the nibbling only makes a soft sound, the biting is signaled with a much louder sound. So listen carefully!
- At the moment of biting, press the A button again to pull the fish ashore.
Where can I catch fish in Animal Crossing?
You can fish anywhere there is water. You can fish at the river, at the sea or even at a pond. Anywhere you see the shadow of a fish, you can cast your line. Besides the obvious fishing spots, you can also fish at the jetty, at the waterfall and at river mouths to catch specific species of fish that are only found there.
List of all fish: locations & prices
You can catch a total of 80 fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nintendo Switch (). To fill the fauna paedia with all the fish, you have to fish at different times of the year and at different times of the day. The size of the fish can be seen beforehand by the size of the shadow. Big fish bring more money than small fish.

What do lures do and how do I make them?
Since some fish only appear in certain places at certain times, it can take a while for a special fish to appear. With the help of bait you can speed up the process a bit. Cast a lure so that a random new fish appears at that spot. So you don't have to walk around after each fishing attempt until a new fish appears at that spot.
To make bait you need carpet shells, which are available on the beach. Dig with the shovel in the places where you see small holes and water splashing out of them. You will receive a carpet shell and the recipe for the bait, which can be made at Nook's workbench.
