Is there a release date for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel?

The ending of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is making even longtime fans eager for the sequel, as it is different from the 1997 original, but it is not yet clear when Cloud's journey will continue. Square Enix has yet to announce an official release date.

According to a Square Enix blog post, development on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel has been underway since mid-2019, but without knowing the scope of the sequel, we can only speculate about the release date. If we assume the length of the first part, it could be that the release is planned for late 2021 or sometime in 2022.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase stated to Famitsu(via Comicbook) as recently as late 2020 that work on the sequel was going well. Asuka Yoshikawa, motion capture actress of the game's character Aerith, wrote on Twitter during the same period that recordings with her were "successfully completed" after announcing the day before that she was working with the Sephiroth actor. Some fans concluded that at least the motion-capture shots were finished.

However, in all likelihood, the developers' schedule was thrown off by the changing working conditions since the global pandemic began. What this means for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel is unclear so far.

What happens in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel?

The game ends at the point where the friends leave Midgar. In the original, the game opens the overworld at this point and players must stop Shinra and Sephiroth. Currently, there is no confirmed information about the content and length of part two. However, it seems plausible that the sequel will end at the point where the first disc of the original game ended: In the Forgotten City, also called the City of the Ancient People.

Sephiroth and Aerith experience a meaningful encounter in the Forgotten City in the original - this would fit well with the aforementioned motion capture footage, which was completed in late 2020. However, the changes to the story could make the remake very different from the original.

The gameplay could also change in the sequel: In the course of the original game, for example, the possibilities of moving the game characters expanded. In particular, we can expect to see Chocobos - giant birds that act as mounts in the Final Fantasy games, and could be caught and bred in the original. In addition, there was a buggy to cross shallow waters, a submarine and later even an airship. The latter will most likely appear later in the remake, though.

How does the hunt for Sephiroth continue in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel?

How does Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade fit in?

Square Enix announced the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade for June 10, 2021 - this is basically a PS5 upgrade of the main game with another story episode. For owners of the PS4 version, Intergrade is free of charge, with improved graphics and a photo mode. There are also faster loading times and the integration of haptic feedback on the DualSense controller of the PS5.

The story is also expanded in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. An additional episode featuring Materia hunter Yuffie Kisaragi takes players on a mission against Shinra. An all-new character, named Sonon Kusakabe, joins the team as a playable party member. As of right now, however, the PS5 expansion won't be mandatory to experience the Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel.

What playable characters are there in the second part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake?

It was initially unclear if and which characters from the original would make it into the remake. However, the announcement of the PS5 add-on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade now gives the impression that many familiar faces will appear over time. The add-on gives next-gen players optional chapters, which also include Yuffie and the playable character Sonon. Fan favorite Cait Sith was also briefly seen at the end of the first part. It's likely that these characters will be playable in the sequel.

However, the way the storytelling works in the remake so far, it seems inappropriate to leave the players free to assemble the party. Presumably, some characters will accompany players more in sections so that the story and setting can be more responsive to the different characters.
