GTA 5: Transfer online character & savegame to Next-Gen

More than seven years after its original release, GTA 5 is now appearing on what is now the third generation of consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. So you don't have to start from scratch, you can transfer your online character and story score.

Can I transfer my Xbox One save game to PS5?

Yes, GTA 5 offers the possibility to transfer your character from a last-gen console to a next-gen console of your choice. For example, if you played on Xbox One during the last console generation but have now switched to a PS5, you can transfer your save game and online character from Xbox One to PS5. You have the following options:

  • PS4 to PS5
  • PS4 to Xbox Series X/S
  • Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S
  • Xbox One to PS5

GTA 5: Transfer Singleplayer Score to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

Important: You must have the Xbox One or PS4 version installed to transfer your single player score to Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5.

To transfer your story mode progress from GTA 5 to a next-gen console, you'll also need a Rockstar Games Social Club account. If you don't already have one, you can sign up on the linked website with your Xbox or PlayStation account to create one.

Then start the single player mode of the Xbox-One or PS4 version of GTA 5. Open the pause menu, go to the "Game" tab and select the item "Upload save game". Here you can select one of your saved games and upload it. Caution: This only works with a single save game.

In the pause menu of GTA 5 you can upload your save game.

As soon as the message "Upload save game - Your save game has been successfully uploaded. You can download your save game when you launch Grand Theft Auto 5 on your Latest Gen platform" appears, you can quit GTA 5 again.

After that, start the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version of GTA 5 and select the single player mode. In the pause menu, you can download your uploaded savegame under Game > Savegame and continue playing where you left off on the last-gen console.

Note: Your single player save game will be stored online for a maximum of 90 days. So you'll have to transfer it to the new console within 90 days.

GTA Online: Character transfer - this is how it works

You will also need a Rockstar Games Social Club account to transfer your GTA Online character. However, you don't have to upload your character yourself, as your data will automatically be saved in the cloud when you are connected to the Rockstar Games Social Club.

Launch the next-gen version of GTA 5 and select multiplayer mode. GTA Online will automatically recognize your old character and guide you through the character transfer step by step. Keep in mind that after this transfer, you'll only be able to play your character on the next-gen console - it won't be available on Xbox One or PS4.

Cautionif you have bought GTA$ for real money, you can only transfer them to the next generation within one platform - i.e. from PS4 to PS5 and from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.

Is crossplay between last and next gen possible?

No, crossplay between the old and new console generation is not possible. If you want to continue playing GTA Online together with your friends, you will have to choose a platform.

Can I transfer my PC character to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S?

Unfortunately, we have bad news for PC players who want to move to a next-gen console. Online characters from the PC version cannot be transferred to a next-gen console, as Rockstar announced via Twitter.
