Heavy Rain: How to unlock all the endings

In this solution to the 17 endings of Heavy Rain you will learn:

  • What choices you have to make for the different endings
  • What is the best and what is the worst possible ending of the game

The adventure game Heavy Rain from French developer Quantic Dream () was beyond impressive when it was originally released for the PS3 in 2010. Staged as an interactive thriller, it featured terrific graphics and insanely lifelike characters.

Since June 24, 2019, PC gamers can finally enjoy Heavy Rain, while owners were able to catch up with the thriller back in 2016. Since every little decision in Heavy Rain has an impact on the further course of the story of the four playable characters, the adventure game has a total of 17 possible endings, which are presented in the epilogue.

In this walkthrough, we'll therefore tell you what you have to do to see the different endings. But beware: Of course, one or the other spoiler can't be avoided.

All possible endings of Ethan

Ethan's story in Heavy Rain revolves mainly around the fact that he wants to find his son Shaun, who was kidnapped by the Origami Killer. The fact that he lost his older brother Jason two years earlier makes him additionally unstable. Depending on the choices you make, you can unlock the following endings:

Ethan is searching for his son Shaun, who was kidnapped. Two years earlier, his older brother Jason also died.

  • A new beginning: Ethan survives the game and is not arrested. For this, you must not kiss and forgive Madison in the chapter "On the Run" or she must die in the chapter "Killer's Apartment".
  • Innocent: Ethan is arrested, but Shaun survives and confirms Ethan's innocence. However, to do this, you must have Blake arrest Ethan in the "On the Run" chapter. Also, you'll have to rescue Shaun with either Madison or Norman.
  • Ethan's Grave: In this ending of the story, Ethan dies.
    • To see this ending, you'll need to find Shaun's prison with Ethan.
    • In addition, in the chapter "The Killer's Apartment", Madison must find the address of the warehouse and, most importantly, survive.
    • Also, you'll have to have Madison arrested in the chapter "The Old Warehouse." Norman doesn't play a role in this.

  • Origami Blues: Ethan is able to escape arrest here, but Shaun dies. There are a few steps necessary for this ending:
    • You must not kiss or forgive Madison in the chapter "On the Run".
    • Also, you must escape Blake with Ethan in the same chapter.
    • Also, Ethan must not find Shaun's hiding place. You can achieve this by simply screwing up the last test and going to a wrong address.
    • Norman must give up in the "Solving the Puzzle" chapter.
    • Madison must either die in the course of the game. You can do this in the chapters "The Doc" and "The Killer's Apartment". Or you enter the wrong passwords in "The Killer's Apartment" and thus don't find out the address of the warehouse.
  • Helpless: If you reach this ending, Ethan will be locked up and Shaun will die. You trigger this finale by having Ethan arrested in the "On the Run" chapter. Also, Norman has to give up in the "Solving the Puzzle" chapter. Last but not least, Madison has to either die again or fail to find out the address of the warehouse (see above).

All possible endings of Madison

Madison has also been given different endings by the authors, ranging from happy to cruel:

Madison is a photojournalist, but also stumbles into the case surrounding the Origami Killer.

  • Heroine: For this ending, Ethan must either not kiss or not forgive Madison in the chapter "On the Run." But for this, the lady must find out the address of the warehouse in the chapter "Apartment of the Killer". Last but not least, Shaun must be rescued by some character.
  • Zero point: Here Madison survives, but gets virtually nothing done. In return, Ethan is once again not allowed to kiss her or forgive her. In addition, Madison is also not allowed to find out the address of the warehouse, but she has to survive the chapter. Whether Shaun is found by Ethan or Norman in the end doesn't matter.
  • Dead Heroine: As the name suggests, Madison dies for this ending. You can thread this in the chapters "The Doc," "The Killer's Apartment," or "The Old Warehouse."
  • A New Life: You get one of the happier endings by having Ethan either kiss or forgive Madison. She also has to escape Blake in the mission "On the Run." In the end, Shaun must also be rescued, though it doesn't matter if it's by Madison, Norman or Ethan.

  • Tears in the Rain: Here Shaun does not survive, but the relationship between Madison and Ethan is better. To get this ending, a few steps are necessary:
    • In the "On the Run" chapter, Ethan must kiss or forgive Madison, plus they must escape Blake.
    • Ethan must not find out Shaun's hiding place, so as described above, you must not pass the test and thus go to a wrong address.
    • Norman must give up in the chapter "Solving the Puzzle".
    • Madison must not find out the address of the warehouse in the chapter "The Killer's Apartment" by entering wrong passwords on the computer. However, she must survive the chapter.

All possible endings of Scott

The retired cop has only three endings, which you will reach as follows:

Retired Police Officer Scott investigates the Origami Killer case on behalf of survivors.

  • Unpunished: In the chapter "Trapped" you have to let the prostitute Lauren die. Scott, on the other hand, must survive the chapter "The Old Warehouse".
  • Origami Tomb: If you want to experience this unfavorable ending for Scott, you'll have to kill him with either Norman, Madison or Ethan in the chapter "The Old Warehouse".
  • A Mother's Revenge: In this ending, both Scott and Lauren survive. Therefore, you'll have to rescue Lauren in the "Trapped" chapter and make sure Scott gets away scot-free in "The Old Warehouse" as well.

All Possible Endings of Norman

FBI Agent Norman has another four epilogue options that you can unlock:

FBI Profiler is after the Origami Killer and, of course, wants to take the guy down.

  • Case Closed: You'll get the supposedly best ending for the lawman by making sure Norman finds all the clues that lead him to the warehouse in the Crime Scene, Mad Jack, and Aquarium chapters. Also, Shaun must be rescued by either Ethan or Madison. Finally, Norman has to kill the Origami Killer at the end.
  • Mirror World: In this ending, Norman survives but fails as Shaun dies.
    • For this, the FBI man will have to give up in the chapter "Solving the Puzzle".
    • Ethan, on the other hand, must either be arrested in the "On the Run" chapter or you'll make sure that he doesn't find Shaun. As described above, you'll just have to make sure that he goes to the wrong address.
    • Madison, last but not least, must either pass away in the chapters "The Doc" or "The Killer's Apartment" or fail to find out the address of the warehouse in the latter section.
  • Resignation: Again, Norman survives, but Shaun is saved by someone else. To do this, make sure Norman doesn't find Shaun's hiding place by giving up in the "Solving the Puzzle" chapter. In addition, you must make sure that either Madison or Ethan track down and rescue the little guy.
  • Uploaded: In a nutshell, Norman dies in this ending. You can accomplish this in the "Mad Jack", "Aquarium" or "The Old Warehouse" chapters.

The best and the worst ending of Heavy Rain

As you can see, there are a lot of possible combinations and different endings for the four main characters in Heavy Rain. But is there a "best" and a "worst" ending? We want to briefly explain this question to you in conclusion, but once again: Warning, spoilers!

The best ending of Heavy Rain

The best ending of Heavy Rain's story is certainly the one in which Shaun is saved, Ethan is found innocent, and the Origami Killer is caught or killed.

If you've read this far, we can tell you that Norman, Madison and Ethan should survive for this. On the other hand, whether Madison or Ethan end up having a romantic relationship or not, that matters less.

The worst ending of Heavy Rain

There are also various constellations for the bad ending of Heavy Rain, but certainly it should pass for bad if Norman, Madison or Ethan die or, in the case of the father, get arrested.

Shaun, Ethan's youngest son, also can 't survive the murder hunt, which in almost all cases leads to Ethan taking his own life - certainly not a happy ending either. Besides, the Origami Killer may also get away scot-free if you make the wrong decisions.
