But then you can once again face the fight against the swarm with the iconic characters Marcus, Del, JD, Kait and Co. and shoot your way through the semi-open game world.

However, the shootouts can quickly mutate into a challenge depending on the selected difficulty level. That's why we've put together ten helpful tips in this guide, which will make it easier for you to get started in Gears 5. For achievement hunters, we also have a Gears 5 trophy guide.

Table of Contents: Beginner's tips for Gears 5

1. Take a shotgun with you

In the course of your adventure you'll pass by plenty of weapons, although by default you'll have the Lancer with its chainsaw attached to the barrel. Simply because this thing conjures up the coolest effects on the screen in close combat.

As a secondary weapon, however, we recommend that you always have the Gnasher shotgun in your luggage. It's not useful at long range, but it works well as a lifesaver.

In the fights, the nimble enemies will surprise you again and again by suddenly appearing next to you, while you had taken another creep under fire. In such situations, the shotgun will make short work of the guy who got too close to you.

2. Let Jack fetch you ammunition and weapons

One of your companions on the journey is a flying robot named Jack. Thanks to his skills, he not only helps you in battle by blinding enemies or strengthening your armor. You can also send the heap of metal to fetch weapons that are far away from you.

To do this, simply aim your gun at the object you want and press the button that appears. After that, your machine buddy will buzz off and bring you the object.

This option turns out to be especially useful in the hectic battles against several opponents or large groups of enemies, when you quickly run out of ammunition.

You need components to upgrade Robot Jack. The things are often well hidden, so explore the game world extensively.

3. Keep your eyes open for components

Speaking of Jack, developer The Coalition has added role-playing aspects to Gears 5 with the robot. You can give the little guy new functions over the course of the game, which you can find in the levels, and then gradually upgrade and expand them.

To do this, you'll need so-called components, since each upgrade of Jack's abilities requires a certain number of these parts. They are basically easy to recognize and remind a bit of a test tube holder with a yellow glowing test tube.

However, the nasty thing is that these components are hidden all over the levels. Of course, you'll find some on the obvious path, but it's advisable that you systematically scour the areas to avoid missing any.

For example, you can shoot shop windows in the streets to jump into the store behind them, where you'll often find components or collectibles.

There are also hiding places that you can't reach by yourself. In such moments just send Jack, as described above with the weapons, so that he collects and brings them for you.

You will find a Gears5 component guide here soon.

When you have collected enough components, you can upgrade Jack's skills. The better the upgrade, the more components you will need.

4. Change cover frequently

This tip is obvious, since Gears 5 is a so-called cover shooter. But in the fast-paced battles, it's easy to forget that your character can change cover at any time.

Once you take cover, you can still freely move your character behind it to perhaps get a better shot. But you can also jump or leave cover at any time to take cover behind another object or rush to an enemy.

These tactical considerations usually make the battles a bit easier, because if you pause, the opponents will pin you down in no time.

Analyze the future battlefield carefully. Often there are explosive objects or cannons that you can use to attack the swarm.

5. Don't be afraid to fire blindly

Speaking of cover, if you ever find yourself stuck behind cover because too many enemies are shooting in your direction, feel free to use blind fire.

You can do this by not using the rear sight, which is always advisable. Instead, you simply press the fire button. Then your character raises the weapon above his head and shoots roughly in the targeted direction.

Of course, these volleys aren't that precise, but they can make the difference here and there.

6. Use the opportunity to surprise enemies from behind

Gears 5 is very much designed for action-packed shooting. But in most battles, before the shooting starts, you have the opportunity to take a closer look at the future battlefield.

On the one hand, this makes sense, since you'll know better where ammunition or other helpful things like guns might be.

On the other hand, it also gives you the chance to get a picture of the enemies and possibly pick out one or two that you can finish off from behind.

This not only saves ammunition, but also decimates the number of creeps that will later join in the firefight.

Robot Jack can get you weapons that are too far away during the fight. When you see the corresponding icon, just send the pile of metal.

7. Try to master reloading

Also an important aspect in the battles in Gears 5 is reloading. Especially beginners are likely to just press the corresponding button here to have a full gun in their hands again.

But: As soon as you press the reload button, a bar appears below the ammo indicator in the upper right corner of the screen for a short time, in which a marker moves. Here you have to be quick and press the reload button again and correctly timed.

If you do this perfectly (the thick white area), the reload will be faster and you will also get a bonus on the damage done.

If you only hit the normal white area, reloading will be even faster.

8. Integrate the environment

Gears 5 often puts you in a situation where you're facing an overwhelming number of opponents. Both ammunition and life energy will quickly run out.

Therefore, always keep an eye on the battlefield. Not only will you usually find enough ammunition in your surroundings. Often your surroundings also offer helpful objects.

Sometimes you can get behind a gun to deal out some serious damage. Sometimes there are explosive objects around, which you can blow up with one shot and the swarm scum standing nearby with it.

So if you keep your eyes open, you'll make your life easier and, above all, ensure your survival.

Jack starts out with very few abilities in Gears 5. To get new ones, search the levels carefully, because that's where you can find the components.

9. Remember the melee option

We've already told you to use the shotgun to keep intrusive aliens at bay. But of course there are also situations where the guys almost jump into your face. Or the change of the weapon would take too long or the shotgun might be out of ammunition.

In such moments, remember that your character also carries a knife for emergencies. You can wield it with a simple keystroke and still keep your opponents at bay if all else fails.

10. Use grenades regularly

Last but not least, grenades are also a tool in Gears 5 that you're sure to overlook in the rush to use them. But whether you use the regular explosives or the shock grenades to paralyze your opponents for a short time, these things prove to be extremely handy.

Gears 5 also always shows you where the grenade will land and where it will roll afterwards, or how it will bounce off obstacles. This way, you can also use it strategically when enemies are entrenched somewhere and you don't have a clear field of fire.
