Fallout 76: Guaranteed to use mutations correctly

In the radioactively contaminated world of Fallout 76, you will sooner or later catch a mutation due to the irradiated environment. What would be annoying in other games, you can use to your advantage here: Most mutations have strong positive effects, such as increasing your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. values, and you can reduce the disadvantages by using the appropriate perk.

In our guide you will learn

During a refreshing bath we catch RADs (and hopefully soon a mutation).

Getting and getting rid of mutations

Whenever you expose yourself to radiation in the game world, you have a chance to get a random mutation. This may or may not bring the mutation you want.

If you have saved up a lot of crown corks and don't want to gamble on mutations, you can buy a serum with the desired mutation effect from the merchant in the Whitespring bunker for 4400 crown corks. However, you will only get this purchase opportunity after you have completed the Enclave quest series up to and including "Officer on Deck".

The following actions will irradiate you and increase the chance of mutation:

  • stand in contaminated water
  • eat the food available in the game or raw fruits and vegetables
  • drink from rivers, streams, lakes or from the water pump
  • stand next to a barrel with radioactive material
  • fight against burnt and/or ghouls
  • Buy mutation serum in Whitespring bunker

This is how you get rid of mutations:

  • Throw in RAD-Away
  • run through a decontamination arc (in power plants, mines, in Whitespring bunker)

A hotspot for easily acquiring mutations is the Blackwater mine near the Whitespring resort. Inside the mine (after the area change), there is a radioactively contaminated area near the entrance and a decontamination arch.

From the door, just follow the tracks into the shaft until you see your RADs start to rise and wait - after a short time you should get a mutation. In the nearby sanitation and recovery area for the miners, you'll also find the decontamination sheet in case you get a mutation you don't want. This will also save you a lot of RAD-Away!

If you want more than one mutation at a time, go to the Emmet Mountain landfill. There, you'll only have to clear out a few enemies, and you'll quickly reach highly radiated barrels full of radioactive waste in the landfill. Once you've obtained a mutation there, switch servers and do the same thing again and you can farm mutations useful to you at your leisure.

Before you remove the deadly radiation with RAD-Away, be sure to activate the "Strengthened Genes" perk and deactivate it before the next radiation run. We'll tell you the effect in the next section.

You can easily get mutations in these three places.

Perks for playing with mutations

Sooner or later you'll need to get rid of your RAD charge, but as soon as you use RAD-Away, your mutations will also go to waste. To keep them permanently and make playing with mutations easier, use the following perks:

Strengthened genes (L - Luck, from level 30)
With this perk, you mutate with a lower chance in level 1, and never in level 2 when exposed to RADs. In addition, RAD-Away removes mutations at a lower chance in level 1 and no mutations at all in level 2. Use this perk if you already have the mutation you want, so you can remove RADs without losing the mutation as well.

Class Freak (L - Luck, from level 46)
This perk reduces the negative effects of active mutations by 25 to 45 percent from level 1 to 3. Use this perk to make your mutations subtract less SPECIAL values or reduce other troublesome effects.

Stranger by the Dozen (C - Charisma, from level 42)
With this perk, you gain 25% stronger positive effects from mutations when team members are also mutated. This perk is especially worthwhile if you play permanently in the same team and all team members want to use mutations.

Purchase mutation serums in the Science Wing of the Whitespring Bunker.
