To show its true strength, a Pokémon needs experience. In this guide, we'll show you how training works in the Pokémon GO app.

Differences in training: Pokémon GO vs. other Pokémon games

If you have already played a Pokémon part on theor an oldergespiel, you know: by fighting other Pokémon, the pocket monsters can be trained. With each battle, they receive experience points that increase their level. Gradually, their stats improve and they learn new attacks.

In the app for Niantic, however, this works quite differently. With every battle, there are rewards such as stardust and experience points. However, these flow into the player's level, not into that of the Pokémon used. Indirectly, however, your pocket monster also benefits, because with a higher trainer level you can also use more power-ups, which in turn increases the Pokémon's competition points (WP) and power points (KP) .

Pokémon GO: Using Power-Ups

To make your Pokémon last longer in arenas, hold their own against other pocket monsters, and have more strength, you should equip them with power-ups. This is the only way to increase these stats. Other parameters such as attack, defense and so on are fixed and (as of now) cannot be changed.

Once you've selected a Pokémon, you'll see the "Power-Up" button in the middle of the information screen. Next to it, you'll see directly how much this improvement costs. In addition to a certain amount of candies, you will need stardust to complete this training.

However, you won't see here how many competition points and power points it adds. The semicircle around the Pokémon shows how far your Pokémon has already leveled up. Fill the semicircle completely by using power-ups to bring out the Pokémon's maximum strength.

Good to know: Improvements to Shinys are not more expensive.

Pokémon GO: What to do if power-ups can't be used?

If a power-up cannot be used, this can have various causes.

  • You don't have enough candies. For each power-up, a Pokémon needs candies of its own type. This can be two candies, but also significantly more. If you don't have enough, it is recommended to send other representatives of its type to the professor and to catch new Pokémon in the wild. This works especially well during appropriate events, such as the special researches.
  • You don't have enough stardust. You need stardust for many actions in Pokémon GO. Although each battle gives you a small amount of the valuable resource, it is often used up quickly. After all, leveling, evolving, and trading cost a lot of stardust. If your supply is no longer large enough, training won't work either.
  • Your trainer level is not high enough. Pokémon are very close to their trainer. For this reason, there is a kind of block when you want to train your pocket monster. Especially stronger Pokémon are affected by this and cannot perform a power-up if their trainer is not strong enough. To do this, simply level up a bit by fighting with friends, trying your luck in Raids, or catching Pokémon in the wild. Turning PokéStops and evolving in Pokémon GO will also earn you experience points.
