FFXIV Endwalker: The Reaper - Job Guide

In the class guide to theReaper in Final Fantasy 14 you will learn:

  • How to unlock the Reaper
  • What special abilities the Reaper has
  • How the job bar and the resource management work

With the expansion Endwalker Final Fantasy 14 got two new classes. The Sage is the new Healer class, for which we also offer a detailed job guide.

The second new class is the Reaper, a sinister reaper that adds one slot to the list of melee attackers. The Reaper features flexible burst potential, but also has the skills needed to mitigate damage or heal with an AoE attack.

Unlock reaper: How to do it

To have access to the new Reaper class, two requirements must be met. First, you need the Endwalker expansion. You must also have a Warrior or Mage class of level 70 or higher to accept the Reaper job quest.

You can unlock the Reaper in Ul''dah.

Once you have met all the requirements, you will go to the desert city of Ul'dah. In the Nald Cloister, near the market, you will find a rushed servant (X:12.8 Y: 8.6). Interact with him to get the quest "The Scythe". At the end of the quest, you will meet your mentor who, after a brief conversation, will give you the Reaper Job Crystal and a matching Starter Gear.

Similar to the sage, it is recommended that you complete the subsequent job quests immediately. Right at the beginning of your journey, you'll have to complete a special instance that explains the basic mechanics of the Reaper.

How to play the Reaper

The Reaper is a new melee attacker, so its primary task is to deal damage and dodge enemy attacks. The Reaper's power stems from the thirteenth shard world, which has been completely overrun by darkness.

Through the power of darkness, the Reaper has access to an avatar of death that takes the form of a ghost and can perform particularly powerful attacks. The reaper can even merge with the avatar for a short period of time to cast even more powerful attacks.

As a budding reaper, you should first memorize the following combos. These serve to fill your soul bar and unlock more powerful attacks:

Simple Single-Target Combo:

  • Slasher
  • New Light Slasher
  • Infernal Slasher

Simple AOE combo:

  • Sickle Vortex
  • Slashing Nightmare

The Reaper also has three useful abilities that allow it to move rapidly across the battlefield. "Hellish Step" causes the Reaper to move forward 15 yalms. With "Hellish Exit" it goes 15 yalms backwards. Activating one of the two abilities creates a gate of hell. The third ability, "Return", will immediately teleport you to the Hell Gate.

The second job quest will familiarize you with the Reaper's basic abilities.

Reaper strengths and weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Burst combo can be well timed
  • There are hardly any abilities that require a specific position on the opponent
  • Good dodging abilities

Weaknesses:

  • Rotation can be disrupted very easily

Job bar and resource management as a reaper

The reaper has two resources to manage. First you switch on the soul bar free. You fill this red bar by playing your simple combos. Each attack fills the soul bar by ten points. When you have collected enough souls, special avatar attacks can be used.

Avatar attacks in turn fill your second bar, which you unlock at a higher level. This veil bar is displayed as a blue bar and shows the number of veils you have collected. The veils are used to activate the powerful Lemur Veil ability.

In the beginner dungeon, you get to try out the new abilities on a massive Chimera.

Lemur Veil fuses you with your avatar and gives you five Lemur Souls. These lemur souls are used for the reaper's most powerful attacks. So, in summary, your task is to first fill the soul bar, thereby unlocking attacks that fill the veil bar, which in turn enables attacks to turn you into a lemure.
