The story of New World

The storyline of New World is set in an alternate reality, but takes elements from the 17th century that we know. Accordingly, you embark on a journey of exploration into the unknown on the fictitious Eternal Island of Aeternum.

The search for the valuable resource Azoth, which is traded as a source for eternal life, leads you deeper and deeper into the uninhabited area - until you finally have to realize that the island is already populated by sinister creatures.

Unexplored creatures and monsters haunt Aeternum, driven by a vicious depravity.

Now it's up to you to push back the depravity and conquer the land for a new settlement. But beware, other newcomers are also targeting the fertile soil.

The gameplay: How does New World play?

Unlike classic MMO games like World of Warcraft (), in New World you can't choose a specific class at the beginning. Instead, you decide with your equipment and your play style in which direction your character will develop. Each weapon has its own skill tree, with which you'll be able to improve your current equipment.

This means that you won't be forced into a one-dimensional role from the start, and you'll still be able to decide during the game whether you'd rather control a melee fighter with a large shield, an agile ranged fighter, or perhaps a talented mage.

New World's combat system also gets a modern makeover and feels much more action-heavy. Both characters and weapons collide with each other, which should provide more tactical depth in larger battles. Still, your character has abilities with cooldowns, but they require physical contact with the targeted enemy.

In New World, it's not so much your character level that determines the outcome of a battle. Rather, it's your skill and ability with the equipped weapon that determines whether you emerge victorious from a confrontation.

The Company System of New World

Of course, in a sandbox MMO you don't roam the world alone. Other players can cross your path at any time. New World's novel company system allows you to form a community with like-minded players in order to pursue greater goals.

The companies have their own piece of land within the game world, which they are free to manage. Here you can build your own small settlement, collect taxes, expand crafting stations and eventually build an entire fortress.

Of course, your efforts will not go unnoticed by outside players. Players without a company can also settle on your territory according to your rules. Other companies, on the other hand, may even target your land and declare war on you.

How PvP works in New World

Player vs. player combat is a fundamental part of New World, in which the companies play an important role. As mentioned in the previous section, a company can declare war on another company at any time in order to take their land.

Now, each party can assemble 50 of its best warriors into a powerful force. The actual battle takes place away from the normal game world and resembles a siege, where the attacking company must capture the defenders' flag.

In addition to the 50 vs 50 skirmish, New World also offers the possibility for open world PvP. To do this, you must mark yourself as open to PvP. As a sign of your bravery, you will receive additional rewards in the course of the game, both in PvP and PvE.

Is pure PvE also possible?

The large proportion of PvP elements should not deter PvE players from taking a look at New World. The game world can also be explored entirely without participating in PvP through PvE quests. Large-scale events and world bosses provide additional PvE challenges.

However, there are no signs of dungeons or larger raids so far. Instead, players can devote themselves to crafting, collecting resources, and supporting the expansion of their territory.

Will there be micro-transactions in New World?

According to the official New World site, there will be an in-game store where optional items can be purchased for real money. It is not yet known whether these will only be cosmetic items.

Release on PC: When will New World be released?

As was recently announced, New World will be released exclusively for the PC on May 26, 2020. According to the developer's FAQ, a Steam account is required for this.
