Chernobylite guide: Tips & tricks for the survival shooter

In this tips guide to Chernobylite you will learn:

  • How you should behave in battle
  • Why you have to save some enemies
  • How to get your psyche under control
  • Which skills are especially important

Chernobylite has finally been released as a full version after two years of Early Access. The mix of horror and survival adventure takes you to the contaminated area around Chernobyl, where you have to find the wife of the hero Igor. In this guide we will give you the most important survival tips for getting started.

Prevent open fights in Chernobylite

Main character Igor is a scientist and accordingly poorly trained in fighting with firearms. You will find shotguns and machine guns in the course of the game, but in direct duels with the NAR soldiers you will usually be outnumbered.

If you encounter enemies, hide, sneak up behind them and kill them silently. This is always the better way in Chernobylite. If a fight is unavoidable, watch out for the soldiers' laser pointers. They are otherwise hard to spot in the dense bushes.

Go for silent kills in Chernobylite. Wild shooting will rarely get you anywhere.

Save NAR soldiers whenever you can

As you roam the various areas, you'll occasionally come across NAR soldiers who are in trouble. You always have the choice of helping them, killing them yourself, or leaving them to their fate. Even if they are actually Igor's enemies, you should rescue the soldiers from their predicament.

If you fall in the battle, you will wake up as a prisoner in a military base. There you'll have to break out and find your equipment to get back to your headquarters. Each rescued soldier returns the favor once here by secretly freeing you and giving you back all your equipment. This will save you some time.

If you meet soldiers in need in Chernobylite, help them - they will return the favor

Always be on good terms with Olivier

Olivier is your first companion in Chernobylite and has been with you from the beginning. There are numerous occasions when he and Igor will disagree. However, you'll do well to compromise with Olivier in the dialogues.

Throughout the game you'll need him again and again. He'll equip you with your first weapon, he'll always have some good advice and he'll train Igor in various military skills. So don't ever fire him!

In Chernobylite, listen to your companion Olivier and build a good relationship.

Pay attention to your psyche and the radiation value

Besides life energy, two other values play an important role in Chernobylite: mental state and radiation. You will get a high radiation value if you are on contaminated terrain for too long. Therefore, especially in unknown areas, never walk aroundwithout a Geiger counter in your hand. If its value rises above the green indicator, turn back immediately.

The more your hero is irradiated, the lower his maximum life energy will be. Radiation can only be healed with the appropriate items. Only when the value decreases, Igor's life energy can fully recover.

Stay away from contaminated areas in Chernobylite and always keep an eye on the Geiger counter.

Igor's psyche suffers when he starves or is exposed to stress. The latter occurs especially when you kill, get injured or encounter monsters. If the psyche value drops to zero, Igor suffers physical damage. Therefore, provide him with food regularly and avoid confrontations.

The better Igor is trained, the less his psyche suff ers from the battles. At the beginning, for example, he kills soldiers from behind with many frantic knife stabs. If you train the corresponding skill with Olivier, Igor will become more detached.

Let companions train you regularly

In addition to Olivier, you'll meet other NPCs throughout the game who will join your cause. Each of them specializes in a certain area and can train Igor in five skills in exchange for experience points. The more missions you successfully complete, the more experience points you gain.

Use them first for the "Shocking" skill. This will enable Igor to disable enemies from behind without killing them. His psyche will thank you for it. Next, you should improve "Sneak" to be more effective in stealth mode.

So that you can see in advance what it's worth saving up for, we've listed all the abilities along with their descriptions.

Find the merchant Yevgeny

In Chernobylite you will occasionally meet mysterious strangers. Some of them offer trade. On your first big trip into the Eye of Moscow, go in search of Yevgeny, a somewhat peculiar local. Just follow the techno sounds of his portable radio.

For easier orientation you'll find a marker on the map in the following screenshot. Get on good terms with him in the dialogue and Yevgeny will give you a loot box. In it you will find random resources that you can use especially in the beginning. Later he will pay you for the boxes.
