Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: 5 Tips for Better Battles

In this combat guide to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy you will learn:

  • How to deal maximum damage
  • What to watch out for in close combat
  • How to always be right in the huddle

The combat system in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy offers many possibilities, but can quickly become a bit confusing in the heat of battle. In the following combat guide, we explain all the mechanics and how to use them correctly.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Combat Tips - Melee attacks with Star-Lord are rarely effective

You should only go into close combat if it can no longer be avoided. Star-Lord rarely has the upper hand in one-on-one. Some enemies deflect most of his blows effortlessly, others take no damage at all. However, if you manage to defeat an enemy in close combat, you'll be rewarded with additional health pick-ups.

To trigger punch and kick combos, press the square key (PS5) several times. Star-Lord's attacks only become really effective in combination with other abilities, such as the Quill Super Strike advantage or the Wind elemental shot. You'll get the latter late in the game. However, you should unlock the Super Strike advantage as soon as you have found enough components. Read our Guardians of the Galaxy tips guide to find out the best way to discover them.

Star-Lord's melee attacks are rarely as successful as they are here.

Learn the Guardians mode by heart

You open the Guardians mode with the L1 button (PS5). Target an enemy and hold it down. In the menu that pops up, select the desired Guardian with the action keys. Then select one of four possible skills that the team member should use. Time slows down a bit while the Guardian mode is active, but you won't gain much from it.

Therefore, you should definitely learn which skill is on which button. Once you're familiar with the guardian skills, you can use Groot, Rocket, Drax and Gamora for powerful combos. These combos become especially important later on, when you're up against large hordes of enemies or bosses.

When fighting in Guardians of the Galaxy, it's important to memorize the button assignments in Guardians mode

Keep an eye on the momentum meter

If you use your abilities creatively and in a varied way, the momentum meter will fill up. If you fight while waiting, remain inactive for a while, or always use the same actions, it will empty again. The fuller the meter, the more special actions are triggered by your companions during the fight. If an action button pops up above an enemy, sprint to it and press it. This will trigger a particularly effective special move and earn you bonus experience points. So always keep your eyes open.

When the momentum meter fills up, it's much easier to fight in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Stagger your enemies and use the damage multiplier

Some monsters and soldiers have a second bar under the health meter. You can only fill this stagger bar with certain attacks. Staggering attackers are out of action for a short time and suffer more damage. In addition, you can now use abilities that your opponent was previously immune to.

Certain abilities trigger a damage multiplier on enemies. When they are hit, the multiplier appears above the health meter. The multiplier stacks up to five times and can be combined with the increased damage while staggering. So it's best to focus all Guardians on one enemy to take full advantage of these effects. They can be triggered by any guardian.

You can find the stagger meter just below the red health meter of the enemies.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Battle Tips - How does the Huddle work?

In the huddle, you call all Guardians together when things get tight and get them back on track with a short motivational speech. When the huddle display is full, press L1 and R1 at the same time to start it. After that, all Guardians will come to you and describe the current situation. You choose one of two announcements during a countdown.

During the huddle in Guardians of the Galaxy, it's important that you hit the right note.

Usually, Guardians will come to you in one of two moods: over-motivated or down. If they're too amped up, bring them down with a calming response and ask them to focus. If they are down, get them straightened out.

When choosing a speech, also pay attention to the words that appear in the background. They usually provide useful clues as to which speech is the right one. If the guards are happy with your choice, they all get a short buff and do more damage. If you didn't hit the right note, your companions will go away empty-handed.
