Code Vein is an action role-playing game that will be released on Sept. 27, 2019 for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The demo has already been playable since 09/03/2019 and has given us a sneak peek at the new game from Shift, the makers of the God Eater series.
Below, we'll give you some helpful tips for getting started with Code Vein. As soon as the game is released, we will expand this article with new tricks and tips.
This is what Code Vein is about
In the near future, a mysterious catastrophe caused the decimation of all humanity. Only the rubble of collapsed buildings serve as the graves of the deceased. Out of this destruction a secret society of revenants crystallized, the so-called Veins.
With the help of their superhuman powers, they desperately try to fight for their survival. The price of these powers, however, is the loss of one's memories and the transformation into diabolical creatures. These bloodthirsty monsters are also called the Lost Ones.
As a protagonist with unique abilities, you set out to find your own lost memories. Along the way, you'll fight against the ruthless Lost with the goal of finding a way out of this hell. Read more about the story and gameplay of Code Vein in this article.
The first minutes in Code Vein
We find ourselves in a kind of dream environment where we see a bright light and a young woman named Cruz speaks to us. Our memory seems lost and she tries to help us remember our name and appearance. If we choose "Remember name", we give our protagonist or female protagonist a name. With "Change Appearance" we enter a character editor that offers us extensive possibilities to customize our appearance as we wish.
We finally meet the woman who spoke to us. She tells us about our unique abilities and gives us an insight into what they are and how we can use them. She kindly provides us with a willing prodigal to test our newly acquired powers. After gaining all the imparted knowledge, we now get into the actual gameplay.
We are awakened by the "girl in white" and find ourselves in a destroyed environment. She tells us that she has also lost her memories and together we limp our way to a white tree-like object. Once there, the girl tells us about a legend, the truth of which does not yet seem to be proven. We suffer a kind of seizure and see fragments of memories that do not yet reveal much and do not give a conclusive picture.
The girl bites our forearm, so that blood drips onto the floor, the "tree" begins to blossom and blood drop-like fruit wears. Because of this event, she seems to know who we are. She hands us one of these fruits and we sleep peacefully and blissfully on her lap in the next scene. We are taken away by revenants and find ourselves in a prison. From then on, we are allowed to move through the game world completely on our own.
What you need to know at the beginning of Code Vein
At the beginning of the game, you learn that you are the only one with special abilities. You can use so-called blood codes that make you a versatile warrior. With the help of these blood codes you'll be able to master different talents, whose mastery you'll be able to increase in combat. Each blood code has its own individual talents. Once you activate a blood code, you will only be able to use its talents.
If you increase your mastery value to the maximum level, you have mastered that talent and can use it even after replacing the blood code. You will need Ichor to use your talents. This resource is scarce and is used up more or less quickly depending on the talent. To put the principle in a simplified way: Blood codes have talents for which you need Ichor. Ichor recharges itself over time or you can regenerate it with the help of items. You'll also be able to perform a Drain attack that drains Ichor from enemies.
This is a good way to restore your Ichor especially in longer battles. You will quickly notice that even in smaller battles you will use it up in no time. Then you have no choice but to get into the focused state to avoid faltering, fling your opponent into the air and rob him of his ichor with a withdrawal attack. But beware: your opponents are also capable of focusing.
Code Vein: Watch out for clues in battle
In addition to the focused state, there are always smaller clues to look out for in battle. For example, you are also able to parry your opponents. With a parry you can avoid enemy attacks. This has the advantage that you can cleverly save yourself from a situation in which you no longer have an ichor to attack. On the other hand, it gives you the time you need to regenerate your Ichor.
You can also shake your opponent and put him out of action for a few seconds. You, on the other hand, will be more protected from attacks that will sway you and make you an easy target in your battle against the lost. This again benefits you and your Ichor regeneration. To quickly finish off the nasty monsters, you also have the option to strike them down from behind without them noticing you first.
Your stats in Code Vein and how they change with blood codes
Your stats are divided into several categories. In the first column you'll see your Health, Stamina, Ichor, Base Balance, Basic Mobility and the maximum weight you can carry. Below that, you'll find stats like Strength, Dexterity, Sanity, Willpower, Vitality, and Fortitude, each of which has a letter assigned to it as a rank. These status values are affected by your blood codes. Each blood code also changes your stats.
In the second column you can see your main hand as Weapon 1, your secondary hand as Weapon 2 and your Blood Veil. You can switch the main and secondary hand back and forth at will with the control cross key up. The values of weapon 1 and 2 logically show the values of your weapons. The blood veil shows the attack value of the withdrawal attack and that of your talents. The talents have different affinities, namely light and darkness.
In the third column you can see your defense and resistance values. These values change with the selected blood code. So you can adjust the strengths of the different blood codes to the weaknesses of your opponent.
At the beginning, you will receive a fighter blood code that focuses on attack and strength value. While the fighter blood code is active in the tutorial, you will be carrying a large, heavy sword. As soon as you get the Ranger blood code and try to activate it, a message appears that the weapon and blood code are notcompatible. The sword is too heavy, so it's better to use a light bayonet.

How armor in Code Vein affects weight and attack power
Each piece of equipment has a minimum requirement for your stats and a weight. While a fighter can easily wield the heavy sword due to his strength and matching blood codes, a ranger has to fight with lighter items. If your stats are too low, your attack power will also decrease. If the weight is exceeded, you will have a harder time dodging attacks.
Code Vein: All about mistletoe, haze, items and miasma
Mistletoes are places where you can rest to refresh your health. You can also level up there, which improves health, stamina, attack, and the power of your talents. Mistletoe is where you learn new talents or increase your talent mastery. And you can store items and teleport there. They also serve as a storage point.
Mist is invested in the mistletoe for a level increase. If you die, you lose all your mist. You can retrieve lost haze by returning to the place where you died. If you die again on the way there, the haze is gone forever and you must collect new haze. You gain haze by defeating lost people.
There are some very helpful items, such as:
- Regeneration: restores your health points.
- Drain Activator: You will gain more Ichor from Drain attacks
- Bloodstained Stake: You can return to the last mistletoe, but you should use it conscientiously, as it will also cause you to lose all your haze. This item does not deplete, so you can use it as often as you like.
- Needle of Unity: Brings you to your teammate in multiplayer
- Loss Shard S (probably available in other "sizes"): Are left behind haze fragments and in this case give you 100 haze per Loss Shard S.
- Chemical Light: Can be used as temporary markers.
Once you neutralize miasma, you will get a map of the environment. It allows you to see all the paths and corridors that exist in the area. If you don't want to continue moving around using disorganized points on the map, this is a good way to orient yourself. Miasma is neutralized as soon as you activate a mistletoe, purify a rotten mistletoe, or defeat a lost person infected by a mistletoe.
Sensible tips for starting the game of Code Vein
- Explore for all you're worth
For the dungeons offer you many branching paths and trails to explore. Along the way, you'll encounter glittering item names, which you'll also find as markers on your map. You should keep your eyes peeled for these, as they could be fragments of blood codes that you can use to unlock memories and gifts.
- Dying allowed
To try out new tactics and abilities, it's no shame to bite the dust every now and then. Especially against certain bosses or monsters, it is sometimes simply necessary to try out different ways of playing. This is the only way to master difficult situations.
It's even better if you're traveling with a partner. Because he is able to revive you after a short time and vice versa. However, you should be aware that resurrection also comes with a cooldown.
- Use buffs
In addition to the right tactics and skills, buff gifts also help you get the upper hand in boss fights. For example, you can use them to strengthen elemental weapons. Also, if you start a fight with a deprivation attack, you'll get two extra Ichor supplies to help you use your talents even better.
- Try and tweak
You can adjust your blood codes at any time. As you know, your blood codes affect strength, speed, base ichor, and many other traits. Your partner NPC can also be optimized with weapons, gift sets, and their Blood Veils.
- Cure status changes cheaply
To heal status changes, you have the option of using the right blood code with the right gift, in addition to expensive consumables. This way you will not only heal your own status changes, but also those of your partner. This not only saves money, but is also twice as effective.
