Fallout 76: Everything you need to know about PVP factions

In our guide to the factions in Fallout 76 you will learn:

  • which factions are available in Fallout 76
  • how they affect the game

If you've already taken your first steps into the wasteland of West Virginia, you've probably noticed notes of different factions here and there. So far, there are five pre-made factions in the Fallout 76 storyline.

They have different mindsets: some want order, others just want to provide help in the wasteland. All of them pursue their own goals and provide the players with different stories. In our guide, we'll tell you exactly what they are, how you can join them, and whether you can create your own factions.

Are factions just decoration?

Even though Fallout 76 is not a classic role-playing game title, Bethesda is doing its best to draw story-oriented players into the multiplayer experience. That's why the developer regularly publishes lore tidbits in advance to show old Fallout fans that there will still be a lot of classic Fallout feeling in the new title.

The characters of the factions can be found in the world of Fallout 76.

Thus, the official Fallout Germany account tweeted the five factions whose remnants you can find in Appalachia. The Enclave, the Steel Brotherhood and the Raiders should be old acquaintances for series fans. The Responders and the Free States, on the other hand, are new to the Wasteland. We'll explain what exactly each faction is all about below.

At this point, you can only find and collect the legacies of the five different factions in the game world. Each of the factions has its own side quest threads for you, but so far they don't have much influence on your attitude.

What are PVP factions?

As Bethesda announced in a blog post, they are already working on bringing PVP factions into the game. So it's only a matter of time until you can choose a community and thus directly influence the online gameplay. However, Bethesda has not yet announced exactly what this will look like.

In an interview in June, company frontman Pete Hines explained that players should create their own factions by deciding for themselves who they want to be.

Do you want to go around with a group of people and help others or open a big trading post? No problem! According to Pete Hines, these things should be left up to player roleplay. But so far there is no system where you can create your own clans to tie other players to your playstyle.

Since there are already five factions with different goals in Fallout 76's backstory, despite Pete Hines' earlier statement, it's now closer that you'll be able to join one of these factions for now, once the update with PVP factions is released. When this will happen is still up in the air.

Up to four players can explore the wasteland of Fallout 76 together as a team.

What are the benefits of a faction?

Even though there is still no official statement on how the factions will affect the multiplayer, there is already a lot of speculation on Reddit about what the innovations might bring. One user suspects that the decision for a certain clan could lead to you being in a permanent clinch with enemy factions.

Another user takes this idea further and even suspects that followers of other factions will be marked as hostile on the map will be. This could, for example, undermine the mechanics that protect you from enemy attacks and only allow PVP battles to really start after both sides have agreed.

Faction-specific bonuses and special resources that only followers of a certain party can create are also being discussed. You can already find faction-specific clothing in the game, such as the responder's bluesuit. Contrary to current assumptions, you can still wear these clothes without getting crosshairs painted on your back.

What factions are there in the game?

So far, all the followers of factions you find in the game are dead or gone. Since there are no NPCs in the game, you'll learn everything there is to know about the five factions in old letters, digital messages or voice recordings. There are also some side quests for each faction.

In order not to spoil the little bit of story that is hidden in the multiplayer Fallout, we will limit ourselves to the official statements from Bethesda when describing the factions.

The Steel Brotherhood

The Steel Brotherhood in Fallout 76.

"November 2077 - a month after the Great War, Captain Roger Maxson and a few survivors reached the bunkers at Lost Hills. There he founded the Steel Brotherhood, which, with the help of a satellite, expanded its reach across America ... all the way to Appalachia." - Bethesda

The Raiders

The Raiders in Fallout 76

"Ruthless. Selfish. Bloodthirsty. Raiders have been the scourge of the wasteland since the bombs. In Appalachia, they are led by the mysterious Rose, who watches from Top of the World as her raiders spread chaos. Who is she? What does she want?" - Bethesda

The Responders

The Responders in Fallout 76.

"They were always the first to rush to help when danger struck: brave firefighters, police officers and doctors who selflessly served society. After the bombs, they joined together to form the Responders. Their mission: to help one another ... no matter the cost." - Bethesda

The Free States

The Free States in Fallout 76.

"On October 23, 2077, the world plunged into nuclear war. But if you've already assumed the worst? And prepared for it? In Appalachia, there is such a group. They call themselves the Free States. They've holed up in their bunkers and survived. And now ..." - Bethesda

The Enclave

"Before the bombs, the U.S. government retreated to a remote oil rig off San Francicso. The mission of the enclave? To reinstate the government in America from key positions - like a secret bunker in Appalachia." - Bethesda
