God of War Ragnarok: Info & rumors about the successor

The last God of War hit like a bomb with both new and old fans. With a radical reorientation in storytelling, brute action and memorable characters, the reboot brought the hack 'n' slay series back to the top of the gaming Olympus. In September 2020, Sony finally announced the sequel - get all the info on God of War 2 and God of War Ragnarok so far!

Release: When will God of War Ragnarok be released?

As things stand, God of War Ragnarok will be released in 2022, as the developers announced in a tweet at the beginning of June. Originally, the action title was supposed to be released this year - however, the studio decided to postpone the game. Due to the Corona pandemic, the developers are focusing on the health of all employees. So that the quality of the game doesn't suffer, a later release has been estimated. There is no concrete date yet.

Is God of War Ragnarok still coming to the PlayStation 4?

God of War Ragnarok is coming to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Sony is banking on a cross-gen release, as it did with Spider-Man Miles Morales. So anyone who hasn't managed to get their hands on a PS5 yet will still be able to enjoy Kratos' and Atreus' latest adventure.

The PlayStation 5 variant will certainly offer the best experience. We expect at least 60 FPS and a higher resolution. On the PlayStation 4 - especially the standard 2013 variant - you'll probably have to settle for 30 FPS at most and a 1080p resolution.

What is God of War Ragnarok about?

So far, only the protagonists and the setting have been determined. Kratos and Atreus return to face the Norse gods and their subjects once again. From the Reveal teaser, we also learn that Ragnarok - the end of the world in Norse mythology - will play a role.

However, we can already draw some conclusions based on the events in the prequel. Caution: Spoilers for God of War (2018) will follow at this point!

Kratos kills one of Thor's sons - the god Baldur - towards the end of the game. Shortly after that, it starts to snow. The dwarf Brok even comments on this and believes that this is the so-called Fimbulwinter. Fimbulwinter is a three-year period of constant snowstorms and severe weather disasters that precedes Ragnarok.

The sequel will likely be set either in Fimbulwinter or at the beginning of Ragnarok. We also assume that Kratos' and Atreus' offenses against the gods will have consequences. Thus, we already see in a secret cutscene in God of War () how an angry Thor visits the father & son duo in their home.

There's also Freya - the forest witch who supported Kratos and Atreus on their journey, but turned against them in the end. Baldur was in fact her son and she swears that she will take revenge. So, there will surely be some fierce fights in the sequel!

Will anything change in the gameplay in God of War Ragnarok?

In terms of gameplay, the God of War sequel will probably stick to the formula of the reboot. However, there might be changes regarding Atreus' skills. In the prequel, his shapeshifting abilities were hinted at several times, which we might get to see in the next spin-off. Maybe we'll even be able to control Atreus ourselves in the sequel?

The Norse mythology offers a huge arsenal of weapons, so we think it's likely that Kratos will get new weapons in the sequel. One of them could be Thor's hammer Mjölnir. The old God of War saga also offered a considerable repertoire of weapons that could return - such as the Blade of Olympus.

Which worlds will we travel to in God of War Ragnarok?

Most likely, we'll travel to the three remaining worlds that were blocked to us in the World Tree: Svartalfheim, Asgard and Vanaheim.

Svartalfheim is the realm of the dwarves and thus the home of the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri. Asgard is familiar to every Marvel fan. It is the realm of the gods. Thor, the god of thunder who lives there, has a score to settle with Kratos and Atreus. After all, they are responsible for the murder of his two sons Magni and Modi.

Vanaheim is the realm of the "old magic" and the Vanen living there. It is the home of Freya. The war between the Vanes and the Asians is mentioned several times in the game. It's quite possible that we'll learn more about the epic conflict between the gods' genders.
