Minecraft Dungeons: These platforms have crossplay

Good news: Since an update in November 2020, Minecraft Dungeons offers crossplay between all platforms. It doesn't matter if you play on PC, Switch, Xbox One or PS4 - you can play co-op multiplayer with friends on any other device. The only important thing is that you have version 1.6.0.0 or newer installed. This should be the case automatically, since the game automatically installs the latest updates.

This also applies to the next-gen consoles Xbox Series X/S and PS5, which do not have their own versions of Minecraft Dungeons, but which also participate in the cross-platform multiplayer thanks to backwards compatibility. Those who play Minecraft Dungeons on smartphones or tablets via the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate using the cloud service xCloud can also participate.

What you need for crossplay in Minecraft Dungeons

To play Minecraft Dungeons with crossplay, you need a Microsoft account. The game uses this to find matches and friends centrally. If you play on Xbox or PC, you don't need to worry about anything: To play the game, you have to be logged in with an Xbox account anyway.

The situation is different on PlayStation and Switch: Here, you have to additionally link the Microsoft account to be able to use crossplay with other platforms. If you start the game on PS4 or Switch, it will also inform you about this. Alternatively, you can link the account at any time in the options menu under "Game > Configure online game".

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen:

  • Visit https://microsoft.com/link on another device (such as a PC or your smartphone) and log in to your Microsoft account there. If you don't have one, create a new one.
  • Enter the code that is displayed in the game.
  • Now the game on your PlayStation or Switch is linked to the Microsoft account

You can then use the Microsoft account to find friends on other platforms and add them to your party. To do this, search for their Xbox gamertags, add them to your friends list, and invite them to an online lobby. There are a few differences between PC and Xbox, as well as PS4 and Switch:

  • On PC and Xbox consoles, it doesn't matter which platform opens and joins the lobby - crossplay works in all directions.
  • On PS4 and Switch, you can only send invitations to play, but not receive them. So you'll have to open a game, which your friends on other platforms will then join.

Does Minecraft Dungeons have cross-save?

Cross-play is one thing, cross-save is quite another - and unfortunately a feature that Minecraft Dungeons doesn't offer yet. Your game progress is only saved per platform and not automatically synced between multiple devices. For example, if you move from a PlayStation to a Nintendo Switch or an Xbox, you'll have to start the game all over again. Even between Xbox and PC, where cross-save is standard in many games, the feature doesn't work in Minecraft Dungeons.

However, one thing is already certain: it won't stay that way! The developers have already announced on the game's website that Minecraft Dungeons will also receive cross-save via cloud storage in the future. However, it is not yet known when the feature will be added to the game.
