On PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One () and Nintendo Switch, top predators and bounty hunters will make your life difficult.

In this tips guide, we will show you how to face the dangers of the seas as a young animal. Also check out our Maneater trophy and achievement guide to see what's in store for you on this journey.

How do I move my shark through the water and over land?

If you swim to the surface at normal speed, you automatically switch to the "cutting" motion. Your dorsal fin will literally cut through the surface of the water, just like sharks do. Press the dive button when you want to glide back down.

The dorsal fin of your shark in Maneater cuts through the surface of the water

Don't swim too long on the surface. You'll have an easier time finding your way around if you're looking for specific locations, but you won't be able to see what's going on below you. Alligators or barracudas like to snap at you if you swim unsuspectingly over them.

From the cutting position you can also jump into the air to reach higher opponents or items and go ashore. For especially high jump s, take a running start underwater, sprint in an arc toward the water's surface, and press the jump button just before surfacing. When the shark is at its highest point, press the jump button again to perform a double jump.

In some places in Maneater, you may get stuck on land and suffocate

There are situations in Maneater where you will have to go ashore. If you leave the water, a blue bar will appear, signaling how much time you have left on land. When the bar is empty, you lose life energy and die.

On land, your progress is very slow. You can only change direction when you are on the ground. So turn to the right or left and then hop to your destination. Of course you can also eat on land. Just press the eat button after hopping and your shark will pounce on the intended target.

How do I defeat alligators and other predators?

First of all, learn how to use the dodge button. Especially as a young shark, even small enemies like muskellunge will cause you problems. If you hear an attacking fish, immediately press the dodge button and counterattack.

As a young shark, encounters with alligators often end fatally for you.

Stay away from alligators for now. You should have reached at least level 4 before you take on the aggressive swamp dwellers. If you attack an alligator, try to attack it unnoticed from below or from the side.

Avoid frontal attacks, as you will be able to avoid the large Alligator mouth arestill inferior. Dodge the snap attacks, swim an arc and bite the alligator in the flank. Don't stay too long near it, or it will hit you with a powerful tail slash.

Once you're bigger, you'll eat alligators in Maneater for breakfast.

Once you've reached a certain size, you can grab smaller or equally large enemies. To do this, hold the bite button while the predator is dazed, then press the directional buttons back and forth to shake your opponent dead.

Starting in the teens, your shark will master the tail fin strike. You'll use it to strike other predators and, with a little luck, stun them. If you have an opponent firmly in your mouth, press the tail fin strike and your shark will push him across the sea.

How do I fight shark hunters?

If you eat too many people, your threat level will increase and the bounty hunters will take notice of you. In the beginning you will have to deal with two or three simple boats with harpoon hunters, later they will carry machine guns, shotguns or dynamite.

When you have attracted enough attention, you lure the hunter leader

Destroy their boats with bite attacks or tail fin. Before you sink the boats, focus on the hunters themselves. Jump out of the water in front of the boat and press the eat button as soon as one of the hunters is targeted.

This will pull them into the water and you can either eat them immediately or at least make them harmless. If the bounty hunters have targeted you with their laser pointers, press the dodge button to get away from them. Otherwise, you'll quickly have a harpoon in your fin.

Once you're in the hunters' sights, dodge quickly to avoid being hit by a harpoon.

The more bounty hunters you kill, the more hunters will appear - similar to GTA 5 (). If a dance gets too hot for you, dive as deep as possible and sprint out of the danger zone. For destroyed bounty hunter boats you will receive infamy points. Fill this meter and you'll lure out a hunter leader.

Hunter leaders are slightly more resistant than other hunters. They are more heavily armed and hunt you with larger boats. You fight them in the same way as the simple bounty hunters. There are ten hunter-leaders in total. If you kill one of them, Maneater will reward you with a new evolution level.

How do I kill apex predators?

Each area is home to a peak predator. These are usually particularly strong versions of the local predators. You'll be up against giant alligators, very fast barracudas, or a giant orca.

Top predators, like this giant alligator, are the bosses in Maneater

If you come across an apex predator, try to lure it into an environment where there are lots of other fish. You can eat them to regenerate your life energy during the fight.

Especially during the first boss fights, shallow waters are very dangerous for you. There you have less room for evasive maneuvers. As soon as you hear the typical attack sound of the predator, dodge.

Have some patience and don't rush head-on towards the big predators. Try to catch them from the side or from below. After a successful evasive maneuver, the predator briefly flashes yellow.

Perform several quick bite attacks, because now he is vulnerable. Once you have defeated the apex predator, you will receive a special evolution upgrade. Don't forget to eat the meat scraps, or you'll miss out on a big boost of nutrients.

What should I eat as a hatchling?

If you want to level up your shark, you need one thing above all: food. As a young shark, stick to turtles and peaceful fish. Catfish, perch and mahi-mahi are first on your menu. The symbol next to your prey's name tells you what nutrients it contains.

In the secret underwater tunnels you will often find large schools of prey fish.

You should only eat humans in moderation, as this will quickly attract the hunters. As a young shark you have hardly anything to oppose their harpoons and guns.

Take your time and look for nutrient stores. These are chests that are marked with a red signal light. You can find them at the bottom of the sea, in caves or in sewage systems. The last two are usually reached through destructible grids.

Nutrient stores contain a high amount of food that your shark needs. License plates and landmarks will also earn you nutrients. You can find out where to find all the collectibles in our Maneater Collectibles Guide.

What are the caves in Maneater?

In each of the eight large areas you will find a grotto. They serve as a safe place to retreat to. If you are new to an area, look for a large buoy. Once you find it, follow the glowing cable to the bottom of the sea. It will lead you directly into the cave.

The cave serves as an oasis of well-being for your shark. Here you can upgrade it and save.

You can fast travel to any area via the caves. Also, the game automatically saves your progress there. Caves are the only place where you can equip your shark and activate evolution upgrades.

How does the evolution system work in Maneater?

Maneater wouldn't be a "shaRkPG" if it didn't have a character system including experience points and upgrades. You gain experience points mainly by eating and killing fish, predators, humans and of course the bounty hunters.

In the grotto you can give your shark upgrades.

Successfully completing quests and finding collectibles will also fill up your XP points account. When you reach a certain level, your shark will grow. You start as a cub and from level 4 you become a teenager. After that, your shark becomes an adult and finally an older animal.

Some areas you can only enter when you reach the appropriate age. With each age level, your shark will get stronger, withstand more, become faster and learn a special ability. In addition, you'll be able to optimize it with evolution upgrades, which you'll in turn improve with nutrients.

You'll get the upgrades after successful fights with hunter leaders or top predators. They are distributed among the shark's jaws, head, body, fins, tail and organs and, for example, strengthen your bite force or equip you with an electric shock attack.

Some upgrades come in sets. For example, if you have all the parts of the bone set together and equip your shark with them, you will receive additional bonuses to the individual properties of the upgrades.
