Monster Hunter Rise: Switch-exclusive - but not forever

After Monster Hunter World, which was released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Capcom released the new part of the popular action role-playing game series for the Switch. And for the time being, only for this: Since March 26, 2021, Monster Hunter Rise is exclusively playable on the Nintendo console. After the announcement, it was initially unclear for quite some time whether the exclusivity would remain permanently. In the meantime, we know: It won't.

Monster Hunter Rise: PC release is here

In February 2021, Capcom surprisingly announced to Destructoid magazine that Monster Hunter Rise would also be coming to the PC. Now the time has come: Monster Hunter Rise has been playable via Steam since January 13, 2022.

With the delayed PC release, Monster Hunter Rise follows in the footsteps of Monster Hunter World: The predecessor was also first released for consoles and a good year later for the PC. This had some disadvantages for Windows users, because they received many updates, events and patches much later than players on PS4 and Xbox. It remains to be seen whether Capcom has learned from this and will coordinate the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise better with the Switch version.

Is Monster Hunter Rise coming to PS4, PS5 and Xbox?

There is unfortunately little encouraging info on a PlayStation or Xbox release of Monster Hunter Rise. No official announcement of versions for PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, no fixed release date, not even a leak that would point to a release on the home consoles. At least: the announced PC port gives hope that the game would basically run on the consoles and is not completely tailored for the Switch's weaker hardware.

If a release on PlayStation and Xbox should still come, Capcom is more likely to port the PC version, though, which will probably adapt the visuals and performance of Monster Hunter Rise a bit to the higher processing power. We therefore don't expect an announcement until the PC version is fully developed at the earliest - if one comes at all. That Monster Hunter Rise will simply remain Switch- and Windows-exclusive cannot be ruled out at the moment.

Monster Hunter Rise: Alternatives on PlayStation, Xbox & PC

If Monster Hunter Rise doesn't make it to PlayStation and Xbox, owners of the consoles still don't have to completely give up hunting fat critters. The best alternative, however, is one that Monster Hunter fans should already be familiar with: Monster Hunter World

The game, which was released in 2017, is still a reference in terms of monster hunting and offers a lot of content, which became even more extensive with the expansion Iceborne. Of course, those who have already climbed all the ranks and defeated all the beasts won't be able to do much with this alternative. Those who first became aware of the series with Monster Hunter Rise, but can't play it now, should definitely try Monster Hunter World.

Otherwise, a similar hunting experience is offered by Dauntlesswhich openly emulates Monster Hunter. The free-to-play title is playable on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC and basically relies on the same gameplay principle as the Monster Hunter games: Equip your character with powerful weapons, which all play differently, and go hunting for mighty beasts alone or in a team.

The overflowing complexity of Monster Hunter is slimmed down a bit here, the gameplay is a bit faster and more action-packed, the visuals more colorful and comic-like. However, there is just as much depth and nerve-wracking suspense in Dauntless as in the big game.
