God of War, Detroit: Become Human & Shadow of the Tomb Raider - The best PlayStation 4 games for the Christmas tree

In this guide we show you the best PlayStation 4 - games,

  • for all mythology fans.
  • for lovers of good stories.
  • for all action fans.

Since the PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, it has clearly outperformed the Xbox One, selling over twice as many units. Sony gained this advantage with good hardware and first-class games. We've picked out a selection of the best games of 2018 that you can play on the PlayStation 4 and that are also perfect as a Christmas gift.

God of War

Until 2018, anyone who thought of God of War immediately had an ever-raging hooligan named Kratos in their head, slashing his way across Greek mythology. Since this year, everything has changed, because Sony has revamped its hack 'n' slay series.

Despite the change of scenery, we still knock down huge bosses

With the reboot of the series, the developers continue the story, but they make a temporal leap. The choleric rage has become a grim father in the meantime. After a stroke of fate, he has to take care of his son Atreus, with whom he had a rather distant relationship until then.

Also new is the change of scenery away from Greek to Norse mythology. In several worlds of the Norse sagas, including Muspelheim and Niflheim, you'll make acquaintance with some gods, both as allies and - of course - as enemies. In addition to the new environment, God of War's combat system has also been reworked and has become a bit more leisurely, but has kept the old force.

The result of all these changes is a fresh and more adult game that clearly stands out from its predecessors. Nevertheless, series connoisseurs won't be thrown out. Thus, God of War has truly earned its title as "Game of the Year" at the Game Awards.

Detroit: Become Human

Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and now Detroit: Become Human: All games from the developer Quantic Dreams are immediately recognizable by their unique way of telling stories. What you get here are not just games, but interactive movies.

Detroit: Become Human is set in the year 2038, where androids are completely normal and are often used for menial tasks. In Detroit, you take turns playing three of these androids and experience over the course of the story how they slowly develop their own personalities and fight against oppression.

In doing so, the game always leaves you with a variety of decision options that can significantly change your story. All those who want more depth in their story are right on target with Detroit: Become Human.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Every year the groundhog says hello - Call of Duty is a must for shooter fans every year. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, serious changes have been made this time, as the actually obligatory single player has been cut in order to create a thick multiplayer package.

Of course, this includes the classic team play in different modes. Also included, but expanded, is the zombie mode, in which you can travel through different periods of world history and shoot the undead.

The Blackout mode is completely new. This takes up the popular Battle Royale game principle and sends you with 100 players onto a huge map. There you collect weapons and try to win the match as the last survivor. But beware: there are some nasty surprises for careless players.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is back at full speed - now finally immediately on the PlayStation 4. This is worth mentioning because the two predecessors were first released exclusively for the Xbox One . Thus, PlayStation players did not have the title directly on their radar, but that changed with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In the climax of the reboot trilogy, you accidentally trigger the apocalypse with Lara and of course have to prevent it. At the same time, you're once again on the trail of the Trinity organization, whose machinations you're thwarting in the meantime.

You'll shoot, climb and puzzle your way through spectacularly staged levels. The gameplay is easy to handle and the supernatural touch in the story is what makes Tomb Raider so appealing. All those who are looking for adventure at Christmas are therefore in the right place.

Sneak through tombs and sneak up on your enemies or shoot everything down - everything is possible in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Playstation 4 or rather Playstation 4 Pro?

If you're thinking about getting a Playstation 4, you're spoiled for choice. Sony offers two versions of its console, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

The original Playstation 4 can play all games of the console generation, has a Blu-Ray drive and supports the new color standard HDR. However, the hardware is roughly the same as in 2013, so the performance is naturally lower. On the other hand, you save on the price.

The Playstation 4 Pro is a future-proof model. More powerful hardware makes more graphics tricks and a higher resolution possible with the console. The calculated picture is not in native 4K, but it is upscaled and displayed in the high resolution.
