Biomutant tips: How to get started in the Open World

In this tips guide to Biomutant you will learn:

  • How the battle system works
  • Where to find secret locations
  • Why you should urgently look for a mount
  • What makes dodging and parrying so important

In the open world of Biomutant, mutated animal beings rule over a planet ruined by humans. As a furry little mutant, you fight against the aftermath of an environmental catastrophe and have to save the world from impending doom. With this guide, we'll prepare you optimally for your entry into the furry post-apocalypse.

Biomutant character creation tips: don't worry your head about it

Right at the beginning you can create your own biomutant. Among other things, you select a species and assign points to the basic values. However, don't worry too much about assigning points. You'll gain experience relatively quickly over the course of the game, for example by fighting battles and successfully completing quests.

Each time you level up, you'll be able to allocate ten character points to one of the traits. There are no restrictions and you can still develop your biomutant in all possible directions later on. However, two stats are particularly useful for fast progress.

You can also change the properties in Biomutant as you wish later on in the game.

How to quickly improve your character stats in Biomutant

Winning battles is the fastest way to develop your character. If you want to level up your character as quickly as possible, spend a lot of points on strength and vitality right at the beginning. This way you'll be well prepared for the sometimes tough confrontations. Before you follow the main quest and face the world eaters and tribes, throw yourself into a few fights against smaller enemies. This will also help you get familiar with the combat system faster.

In Biomutant, look for many smaller groups of opponents first to improve your stats quickly.

Increase your charisma and ask for secrets

In Biomutant, you'll meet at least one new character in each quest that will prepare you to fight a World Eater or unlock new side quests. Ask each NPC at the end of a dialogue if there is anything more he or she could tell you. Many of them can give you clues about secret locations, hidden items, weapons or armor.

However, you'll have to convince them that you're worthy of learning the secret in question. Increase your Charisma value for better haggling and pay attention to the odds indicator in the dialogs. The higher this value is in an answer, the more likely it is that the NPC will immediately hand over an interesting card marker.

Caution: If you don't manage to get the secret out of the person, you will lose an attribute point.

Pay attention to the displayed chance value when asking for secrets.

Get a mount as soon as possible

Your biomutant is an agile and powerful fighter. However, due to his short stature, long journeys on foot take a bit longer. Therefore, look for a mount in the wild as soon as possible. In each area there are different goat species that you can tame. All you have to do is find their favorite fruit and feed it to them.

You will find the first mount during the main quest, while searching for NPC Gizmo. Puki Azure goats graze in the forests of the area around Brick City. Feed them some Koko-Pip and you will have found a friend for life. You can learn more about mounts in Biomutant in the linked article.

Fast travel in Biomutant: Mark your territory

If traveling on foot or by mount isn't fast enough for you, you can also use fast travel in Biomutant. To do so, however, you have to mark newly found places as "your territory", just like animals do. When you first arrive at an old bunker or fortress, pee on the small pole with the yellow flag. Only then you can use the signpost as a quick travel point and save a lot of time later - so don't forget it.

Biomutant combat tips: master dodging and parrying

Timing is crucial when parrying. If you press the button at the right moment, you will make your opponent stagger. In this state he is very vulnerable. Attack him and you will inflict massive damage. If you avoid smaller creatures, your biomutant will jump over them.

This allows you to catch opponents with shields off guard, for example, and fall into their unprotected backs. With larger enemies, the biomutant will slide under their legs as you dodge. If you attack simultaneously while dodging, you'll either unleash a devastating melee attack or fire bullets while flying through the air.

Combine melee and ranged techniques and learn the button sequences

In Biomutant, you can unleash enormously fast and effective attack combinations if you internalize the correct button sequences. These are basically divided into six melee combos and five ranged combos. Once you learn these key sequences, you can apply them to all the weapons you use. In addition, some melee and ranged attacks can be combined. For example, if you trigger a melee chain attack, you can seamlessly add a ranged special attack.

Especially with stronger opponents, the key combinations for fast Wung Fu attacks should be spot on.

Important key combinations for combat in Biomutant

A possible key combination for PS4 users would be, for example, the square key five times in a row for the chain attack and immediately afterwards circle, square, R2 for a special long-range attack. You can see all the important key combinations in the following tables. For all non-PlayStation players: Square key = punch, X key = jump, Circle key = dodge, R2 key = shoot.

Key combinations for the Wung Fu melee:

Key sequenceTriggered attack
SquareSimple attack

How to trigger Super Wung Fu attacks

If you successfully trigger several special attacks in a row without taking a hit, you will fill up the "Super Wung Fu" meter. It is symbolized by three animal figures in a kung fu stance at the bottom of the screen. When it is full, it unlocks a series of very powerful special attacks for a short time, which you can trigger with the following keys:

SquareBarrage of quick punches against a single opponent.
X, SquarePowerful ground strike with area damage.
