- Where to find the EMMIS
- What rewards await you
- How to get the Omega Cannon
- How to defeat the EMMIS
In Metroid Dread, you'll always have to deal with the deadly EMMI robots. The misguided defense robots chase Samus across the map and kill you with one blow. In this guide, you'll learn where to encounter the EMMIs, how to escape them, and what you need to do to defeat them.
What are EMMIs in Metroid Dread?
E.M.M.I.s are powerful robots that protect a certain area. They detect intruders like Samus and kill them instantly. All it takes is one hit and you're done for. To escape them, you'll have to be extremely nimble, know the surroundings or need high-quality equipment that you'll find during the game.
Metroid Dread: EMMIs - Where can I find them and what rewards await me?
There are a total of seven EMMIs in Metroid Dread, each patrolling a specific area. These EMMI rooms are gloomy and access is through a special gate. You'll encounter the first EMMI early in the game, but since it's damaged, it doesn't pose too much of a threat and serves more as a tutorial. For every EMMI you defeat, you'll be rewarded with a piece of equipment.
EMMI | Location | Reward |
Damaged EMMI | Artaria | None |
White EMMI | Artaria | Spider Magnet |
Green EMMI | Cataris | Morph Ball |
Yellow EMMI | Dairon | Speed Booster |
Blue EMMI | Ghavoran | Ice Missile |
Purple EMMI | Ferenia | Wave Beam |
Red EMMI | Hanubia | Power Bomb |
How do I escape from an overpowered EMMI in Metroid Dread?
Once you enter an EMMI area, the killer robots will try to track you down. Look closely at the map and memorize where the exits are. EMMIs detect sounds and use radar to locate intruders. You can see its range by the cylindrical cone of light in front of the robot's head. If it glows yellow, the EMMI is searching, but has no specific target.
Always stay out of sight and stay calm. If you get too close to the robot, the light cone will turn red and the EMMI will start chasing you specifically. Only if you manage to leave the EMMI area will it stop searching. Once you have the phantom suit, you can make Samus invisible. Activate it by pressing the right stick and stand motionless. Equipped with it, an EMMI won't recognize you even if he's standing right in front of you.
Each EMMI has special abilities, but also has weaknesses (see table below). Some EMMIS can't climb, while others can't get through narrow shafts. Take advantage of their limitations to escape them.
EMMI | Location | Special feature |
Damaged EMMI | Artaria | Has no shield, can't climb and is easy to defeat (tutorial). |
White EMMI | Artaria | Can climb walls. |
Green EMMI | Cataris | Can climb walls and squeeze through narrow passageways. |
Yellow EMMI | Dairon | Can climb walls and ignite a turbo. |
Blue EMMI | Ghavoran | Can climb walls and has a freeze ray. |
Purple EMMI | Ferenia | Climbs walls and can immobilize Samus with a wall-piercing laser beam. |
How can I counter an EMMI attack?
At the slightest touch, the robot grabs Samus and launches a death strike. You have a minimal chance to counter the attack and escape.
The fight sequence consists of two parts: First the EMMI grabs Samus and then it kills her. Both times, the robot flashes briefly before performing its action. At this exact moment you have to press the counter button (X button). The timing has to be perfect. So you'll need plenty of practice and some luck to escape the robots' claws.
Where can I find the Omega Cannon?
EMMI robots can only be killed with a loaded Omega Cannon. However, it has an expiration date and only lasts for one use at a time. To convert Samus' weapon arm into an Omega Cannon, you must first kill a mini-boss and drain its energy. These "central units" are hidden in each EMMI area. To reach them, you'll have to solve a small environmental puzzle, drain heat from rooms or find secret entrances.
The battles with the central units are always the same: fire at the big eye in the center until its protective shell falls off and you can kill it. During the battle, pay attention to the guns placed in the room. Afterwards, interact with the destroyed central unit and Samus' weapon arm will temporarily become the Omega Cannon.
How do I kill the E.M.M.I.s in Metroid Dread?
The Omega Cannon has a rapid fire mode and a charging beam. Once you have the Omega Cannon equipped, you must first destroy the locked gate to the central unit with the rapid fire. Outside, look for a sector with a long corridor without obstacles. Stand at the end of it and watch the map. The blinking object approaching quickly is the EMMI robot.
Make sure that the E.M.M.I doesn't come from the direction you are standing. Otherwise, the fight will be over quickly. As soon as the robot appears at the other end of the corridor, press the L button and aim at its head. Shoot with the Y button in rapid fire mode until the helmet explodes. The more hits the EMMI takes, the more yellow his head becomes. If it reaches Samus before the head explodes, it will kill her.
If the robot gets too close to you, it's better to break off the attack and resume it elsewhere. Once you've blown up the helmet, finish off the EMMI with the charge beam. Press the L and R keys simultaneously, aim at the head again and start the beam with the Y key. Once the EMMI is defeated, you will lose the Omega Cannon and receive a new piece of equipment.
