Darksiders 3 marks the return of the series around the four apocalyptic horsemen. This time you take on the role of the impulsive Fury and huntdown the Seven Deadly Sins. However, the new main character also brings along some changes - especially in the gameplay.

Darksiders took its cue from The Legend of Zelda series, Darksiders 2 turned to the role-playing genre with Fury now taking another change of course. In the style of the first Dark Souls, there are no real dungeons. Instead, the entire game world is a large, intricate map.

Keyword map: Darksiders 3 doesn't have one. You can see a compass at the top of the screen, but it's not really useful. You have to look at the environments very closely and find your way yourself. However, this is quite easy, since Fury's adventure is very linear.

Fighting in Darksiders 3: Here's how to do it right

The most important thing to know when starting out is that you'll have to take down a total of seven big bosses . To be prepared and know how to defeat the seven deadly sins, read our separate boss guide.

Apart from the big hunks, you'll first encounter standard enemies, and the Dark Souls impact is noticeable here as well. You'll basically get along well with the enemies, but a few well-aimed hits will also quickly knock you off your feet.

That's why you should always be careful in every battle. Besides, you can be sure that there is a monster hiding behind almost every small obstacle and wants to surprise you.

Normal demons can't take many blows from Fury's whip. That's why it's worth nottargeting the enemies even later in the game. This makes it easier to hit several enemies at once.

If you're fighting individual enemies in Darksiders 3, you should always target them with the shoulder button. You can also change the target with the right stick when another enemy joins the game.

Targeting only comes into its own with single or few enemies.

How do counters, heals & demon form work?

Always use counters:The maneuvers deal significantly more damage than normal attacks. Fury cannot block, only dodge. Therefore, to counterattack, you must duck away from an enemy attack at the very last second.

The timing in Darksiders 3 takes some getting used to at first. Practice on weak enemies - a few hits against them won't be quite as bad. If you do take too many, you can use the Nephilim's recovery.

The healing items restore Fury's life energy. Always make sure that there are no enemies around when you use them. You can and will even improve them with found items during the adventure. If you run out of them, you'll need some luck.

Because every now and then a fallen monster will restore one of the items. You can also get energy back with items that can be used once. But then it takes a few seconds until you can use the normal objects again.

If you have killed enough demons, you can activate Fury's demon form called Chaos Shape. With this form, your life bar will slowly fill up again and you'll also deal out a lot of damage. You can use the form from the beginning, so make use of it.

Use Fury abilities in battle

Fury gradually gains four different abilities. If you release the wrath energy - the bar under your life meter - Fury will perform a particularly powerful attack. In Darksiders 3, you'll use the following Fury abilities in combat:

• Flame ability
• Force ability
• Fury ability
• Storm ability

In each form, the attack changes. With flames, for example, you set your enemies on fire, and with a power skill you knock them out with a blast wave. Fire and storm are especially valuable attacks, as they deal damage over time and hit all enemies around you.

Fire helps tremendously in combat. It continuously damages the enemies.

Search every corner of the world

Especially when starting out, it's important that you don't just take every turn and investigate every street. Actually, you should break every trash can, every cocoon and every object - that you can destroy.

Because in them Fury will find souls as well as improvements. You can use the latter to strengthen your weapons. For example, in Darksiders 3 you'll increase the chance of more damage or a healing item.

Be careful when exploring, though. Demons protect almost all objects. If you don't see them right away, they're just waiting to pop out of cover.

These yellow orbs always mean a useful item.

Leveling in Darksiders 3: How does it work?

The leveling system is also based on Dark Souls. You will encounter the merchant demon Vulgrim at fast travel points throughout the world. Series veterans will still know him from the predecessors. You can not only buy normal healing items from him, but also level up.

To do this, you feed him the blue souls that you receive for killed enemies or that you find in special shards. If you give Vulgrim enough of them, Fury's level will increase. Sometimes you'll even come across an item that causes an instant level increase.

By the way, as in Dark Souls, you'll lose collected souls if you die and don't collect the currency left behind. Also, with each level, the price for the next one increases.

Also, don't forget to go to the menu after leveling up. You'll receive a trait point for each level-up. You distribute this to Fury's three attributes: Life Energy, Strength and Magic.

Improve weapons: How do I do that?

We come to the end of our beginner's tips: You'll get various weapons in the course of the campaign. But the most important one remains your whip from the beginning to the end. You can improve it - like the other clubs - at the creator Ulthan.

For each improvement, Fury needs diamond spar shardsfragments, or pieces. It all depends on how far you have already upgraded your weapon. That's why exploration is extremely important in Darksiders 3.

This is the only way to find items and get stronger. You'll also unlock improvements for your sticks this way. Focus on one of them at the beginning, as well as on the whip, since you'll use it the most.
