With the city-building simulator Cities: Skylines, the studio Colossal Order landed a hit in 2015, which became the favorite game of millions of construction fans right from the start. The developers added content in several DLC packages, but a successor has not been seen yet.

Cities: Skylines 2: Announcement still pending

As much as fans of the first part may wish for a successor, it is actually not at all certain whether Cities: Skylines 2 is even in development. There is no official announcement from the developers. Colossal Order did talk about a possible sequel in 2015, shortly after the release of Cities: Skylines, but mainly set up restrictive conditions:

  • First, they wanted to provide the first part with expansions and new content over several years.
  • After that, one could think about a Cities: Skylines 2. However, this would only make sense if part 1 had reached its technical limits.

A good six years later, the DLC offer for Cities: Skylines is indeed lush. The last expansion to date was released at the end of March 2020: The Sunset Harbor expansion pack brought new content about fishing and air traffic to the digital metropolis. Since then: Silence - both in terms of DLC and a possible successor.

The current status in a nutshell: Cities: Skylines 2 has not been officially announced. Whether the sequel is in the works, no one knows for sure at the moment. However, the last DLC was released quite a while ago - so it's quite possible that Colossal Order has thrown all its resources into the production of a second part by now. But: Nothing is known for sure.

Cities: Skylines 2 Leaks: What's the truth about the rumors?

Leaks have surfaced again and again in the past months and years, in which supposed insiders claimed to have information about Cities: Skylines 2. These rumors range from feature compilations to reports of alleged game testers who claim to have already played early versions of Cities: Skylines 2. None of them have come true yet, primarily the rumors suggest what fans of the first part of Cities: Skylines 2 would like to see.

  • Larger map with multiple cities: a larger game world and the ability to build more than one city is pretty high on the wish list.
  • Better graphics: Cities: Skylines is not an ugly game, but with current technology, nicer worlds and buildings are of course feasible than was the case in 2015. Therefore, many fans expect a visual upgrade from Cities: Skylines 2.
  • Better user interface: Complex building games often suffer from confusing menus, and Cities: Skylines also needs optimization. So-called "Quality of Life" improvements are therefore always welcome.
  • Mod integration: The PC version of Cities: Skylines now draws from a huge pool of mods that fans of the game have designed themselves. The console versions, however, do not have access to this. Some players hope that the successor will integrate the best ideas into the main game.
  • Multiplayer: Settling together on one map - that's what quite a few fans want. Multiplayer mods make it possible to play together in a roundabout way, but an integrated multiplayer mode would of course be better.

Until Cities: Skylines 2 is perhaps announced, fans of the predecessor only have to get new features into the game themselves. At least on the PC, this is easily possible via mods from the Steam Workshop. Have a look at our list with the best mods for Cities: Skylines and get inspired!
