In Bethesda's Fallout 4 from 2015, you still had the option of roaming through the wasteland with an NPC companion. However, the choice of your companion is not without its difficulties, because everyone has their own individual values and abilities. To save you from painful separations, we'll give you some tips and tricks for dealing with Fallout 4 companions.

What you need to know about the companions in Fallout 4

You decide for yourself whether you stalk through the Commonwealth alone or with an NPC. You'll be accompanied by a dog, a human, a robot, a ghoul, a synth or a super mutant. Each one has its own personality and skills, which will give you corresponding advantages and disadvantages in the course of the game. In addition, there are special companion quests that you can master on your own.

There are a total of 13 companions in Fallout 4, which you first have to find. They all have two things in common. First, you can store items with them to save you the hassle of going to the merchant. They are also immortal and will be available again after a short KO phase, should they fall to the ground. Additionally, you can learn a companion skill from most companions.

A romance can even develop from an excursion together, which earns you the time-limited bonus "pillow talk". This lets you gain more experience points for a short time. Also, there's no time for jealousy in the Wasteland, so you can get romantic with multiple characters with a clear conscience.

The game mechanic behind the companions in Fallout 4 is "affection". Almost like in real life, this increases when you do something that pleases your counterpart - if you behave in the opposite way, it decreases accordingly.

The maximum affection value is 1100, and when this is reached, you will have spent so much time together that you will learn the "companion ability" of your counterpart. These are permanent perks that remain even when you return to roaming the wasteland as a lone wolf.
