Call of Duty Vanguard: Tips & tricks for multiplayer

In the tips guide to Call of Duty: Vanguard you will learn:

  • General tips & tricks for multiplayer
  • How to determine the combat tempo
  • How Support Fire & Blind Fire works

For most people, the multiplayer mode in Call of Duty is the most exciting feature. This is primarily about reaction speed, although there are a few other factors that determine your skill. In this guide, we'll give you some useful tips and tricks to help you dominate the battlefield in no time.

The new combat tempo mechanic in Vanguard

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, there is a brand new feature to filter multiplayer matches by player size. This new selection option is called "Battle Tempo". When you want to customize a multiplayer match, you'll be taken to an overview that shows you the different modes. To the right of the modes, you can set the battle tempo.

This new feature allows you to control the flow of the game. Fewer players make for slower, more controlled matches. Many players make for chaotic rounds that offer non-stop action.

You can change the battle tempo at any time in the multiplayer menu.

An overview of all combat tempos:

  • Tactical: Calculated and clear matches
  • Attack: Balance between time before enemy contact and more action-packed battles
  • Blitz: Chaotic battles with a lot of players

For newcomers, we recommend the "Attack" setting. This balanced game flow still offers enough action and guarantees that you won't be overrun so quickly.

Why you should ignore the meta

The word "meta" actually comes from the Greek and means something like "over". In the video game field, the word has formed its own acronym. The word Meta stands for the abbreviation "Most-Effective-Tactics-Available". Especially in shooters, it refers to weapons and equipment that are superior to the others. However, the meta is constantly changing and can be completely changed by the next patch.

Experimenting around will help you find the perfect attachments.

You shouldn't pay too much attention to the meta. Each weapon in Vanguard has its own advantages and disadvantages and differs greatly in the way it plays. Accordingly, you may very well perform much better with other weapons that are not currently in the meta. The weapons can be customized even more with different weapon attachments. Therefore, we advise you to try out all weapons and find your very own favorites.

What to look for in weapon customization

An essential part of Vanguard is the weapon customization. In addition to your actual profile level, there is also a weapon level that unlocks a new weapon attachment with each new level. We've summarized how to gain experience points the fastest in our Vanguard: Leveling Guide.

All weapons have four main attributes, which are subdivided into other smaller attributes. A new weapon attachment can improve these attributes. Most attachments have a bonus as well as a malus, which has a negative effect on the attributes. The trick here is to compensate for unwanted mali with other attachments.

Each bonus usually comes with a malus as well.

In the weapon customization there is a hidden function that allows you to show more details. This lists all of the weapon's stats and shows you exactly what effects an attachment has. Weapon attachments that seem to offer only a bonus often have a hidden malus that only becomes apparent through this function. If you play with the controller, you have to press the R2/RT key when selecting the attachment.

All weapon attributes at a glance:

Firepower:

  • Damage
  • Effective damage range
  • Rate of fire

  • Sighting time

More details reveal the complexity of weapon customization.

Why map understanding is so important

A good map understanding is essential in any multiplayer shooter. You should know exactly where the enemy spawn points, sniper nests and other key locations are on the maps. This will not only allow you to anticipate encounters, but also to know which positions to occupy.

The fastest way to improve your map knowledge is simply by completing multiplayer matches. If you want to look at the maps at your leisure, it's a good idea to start a private match. You do this in the multiplayer menu. Among other parameters, you can set which mode you want to play, how many players there should be, and on which map you want to play. There are currently 17 different maps in Call of Duty: Vanguard.

All 17 multiplayer maps in Vanguard:

  • Berlin
  • Bocage
  • Castle
  • The House

Call of Duty: Vanguard has destructible environments again

Destructible environments are back in this year's Call of Duty game. Vanguard doesn't have the same claim as Battlefield, but you can still get a tactical advantage with the help of this game mechanic. Not every wall in Vanguard can be destroyed. You can recognize destructible walls by a bad wooden cladding that gives way after a few shots or powerful blows.

Use the destructible wooden walls to your advantage!

In any case, be careful not to tear down the entire wall at once if you want to use it to your advantage. A good tactic is to remove the lower part of the wall and lie on the ground. This will make you much harder to spot than if you aim through the upper part of the wall. If you want to deny the enemy team these cover options, a well-placed grenade will be enough to destroy the wall instantly.

Suppressive Fire & Blind Fire

Battlefield veterans will appreciate the utility of suppressive fire. In Call of Duty: Vanguard, Suppressive Fire is a brand new gameplay mechanic that allows you to hold down enemy players. Players who are under heavy continuous fire get a heavy malus on their movement speed. In addition, the field of vision is greatly reduced. Take cover and change your position to recover from the disadvantages.

When you are in front of a suitable surface, the command for "Blind Fire" will appear.

Blind fire allows you to shoot around cover without putting yourself in danger. However, you don't go into the firing position, but fire from the hip. Accordingly, your aiming is also limited. Therefore, you should only use this method in close combat. Blind fire is suitable for defending a room from attackers, for example.
