Horizon Forbidden West: All machines in one list

Fighting against or bypassing machines is a main part of the story in Horizon Forbidden West. There are even more machines in the second part than in Horizon Zero Dawn. In this guide, you'll learn:

  • What machines there are in Horizon Forbidden West
  • What their strengths and weaknesses are
  • How to best defeat them

You can get various achievements and trophies for killing and bypassing machines. You can find out which ones they are and what else you need to do to get platinum in our Horizon Forbidden West Trophy Guide.

Note: We have not yet been able to find and unlock all of the machines ourselves. As soon as there is an update, we will update the article.

All machines in Horizon Forbidden West

In Aloy's new adventure, 43 machines are waiting for you - each of them with its very own strengths and weaknesses. Of course, some new machines have been added in the second part, like the quake tooth or snake tooth.

There are different copies of some machines, such as the digger or burrower. That is, they are susceptible to different types of ammunition. However, in our list we have focused on the standard version of each machine.

By the way, if you have already unlocked hatcheries and bypassed their core, you don't always have to kill the machines, but you can approach them stealthily and bypass them.

Imposing and quite dangerous: the quake tooth.

All reconnaissance machines

With this type of machine, you should see to it that you eliminate it as soon as possible. Except for the long-necked one, these machines are all walking sirens. They scan their immediate environment very precisely and immediately sound the alarm when they discover something unusual. Something unusual like Aloy, for example ..

Fortunately, most reconnaissance machines can be taken out with a silent strike from ambush. If you don't succeed, hopefully you'll be well prepared. As soon as a machine spots you, it will call for reinforcements.

Graves

Graves

  • Vulnerable to: Fire
  • Resistant to: nothing
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: MU
  • Rideable: no

The Graves are among the first machines you'll encounter in Horizon Forbidden West. Accordingly, the danger they pose is manageable. Even in the low level range you can easily eliminate the tombs. Take cover in the tall grass and eliminate them with a silent blow.

In the game you can find 16 different graves variants: Eight normal and eight top variants.

Sky Glider

Sky Glider

  • Vulnerable to: Frost
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

Although the sky gliders move mainly in the air, you can shoot the reconnaissance machines from the sky relatively easily - even if you don't have the appropriate weapons yet. Hit them a few times with a freeze bomb and the metal birds will fall from the sky.

If you want to make sure that the sky glider doesn't call for reinforcements, the first thing you should do is shoot down the antennae on its back.

Longleg

Longleg

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Acid
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

As with the graves, the same applies to the longlegs: Get them to the afterlife as fast as you can. If they start sounding the alarm, it could get pretty uncomfortable. Their vicious spung attacks will knock you to the ground and their screams will leave you partially dazed.

Shoot the wing burners to minimize attacks with fire.

Longneck

Longneck

  • Vulnerable to: nothing
  • Resistant to: nothing
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: PSI
  • Rideable: no

Longnecks are probably the most peaceful machines you can encounter in Horizon Forbidden West. They have no ambitions to attack you and make their rounds on their own. However, you should climb on the head of these gigantic creatures and bridge them. This will unlock the surrounding area with all the collectibles and machine areas.

Red Eye Guard

Red-Eye Guard

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Fire, Plasma
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

In addition to tombs, you will also very often find red-eyed guards as a scouting machine in Horizon Forbidden West. It's best to take them out one by one, because if they attack in a group, they can quickly knock you to the ground with their jump attacks. They are especially vulnerable at their huge eye.

All Procurement Machines

As the name suggests, procurement machines are primarily used to get things. The Flood Slasher, for example, filters sediments for raw materials, the Thornback digs useful parts out of the earth, and Climbing Jaws are little acrobats who are masters at procuring scrap metal.

Wide Maw

Broadmouth

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater
  • Resistant to: Fire, freeze, shock, acid, plasma
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: MU
  • Rideable: no

This hippopotamus-like machine has powerful jaws that can reduce anything and everything to rubble. Rip off the Broadmouth's tusks to reduce its attack power. However, you can only do this if the machine has its mouth open. If that's the case, you should also try to hit the suction unit inside. This will cause massive damage to the wide maw.

Thornback

Thornback

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Acid
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: TAU
  • Rideable: yes

When you travel in the desert area in Horizon Forbidden West, the thornbacks will come in handy, because you need them to complete a mission. However, you should beware of the large tusks. Actually, they are used by the machine to dig out raw materials, but in battle they cause enormous damage. There's only one thing to do: shoot them down! Alternatively, it is also worthwhile to explode the acid canister on the back.

Fire Claw

Fire Claw

  • Vulnerable to: Frost, fire water
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

If you hit the huge Lohe unit of the Fire Claw, it can't really damage you with fire anymore. At the same time, this part serves as another upgrade raw material for your weapons and outfits.

Flood Slasher

Flood Slasher

  • Vulnerable to: Frost, Shock
  • Resistant to: Fire, extinguishing water
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

This machine looks like a harmless seal, but the Flood Slasher is not to be trifled with. Remove the firewater cannons to deprive the machine of a base of attack, then focus on the tidal disk on its back as well as the tail, which deals powerful damage in close combat.

Frost Claw

Frost Claw

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Shock
  • Resistant to: Frost
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

You should really watch out for the paws of the Frost Claw. The procurement machine is much more agile than it first appears. If you are hit by one of its attacks, your skull will thunder. Not to mention the frost damage that the machine deals out.

Grey Goshawk

Grey Goshawk

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Shock
  • Resistant to: Frost
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable:no

Depending on which Greyhawk variant you have in front of you, the frost or fire attacks pose a danger at long range. If you destroy the pouch on the belly of the machine, you can disable the ranged attacks.

Climbing Jaw

Climbing Jaw

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater
  • Resistant to: Fire, Plasma
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

Climbing Jaws are agile machines that you should first remove the tail duster from. This causes the monkey-like creatures to secrete a poisonous gas that briefly prevents you from using food or potions.

Lance Horn

Lancehorn

  • Vulnerable to: Fire
  • Resistant to: Frost
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

The lance horn is usually very shy, which is why it rarely comes to a fight. However, if you're going for it to collect parts of the machine, tear off the drill horns first. They do the most damage.

Scavenger

Scavenger

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Plasma
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: MU
  • Rideable: no

This little guy doesn't like to share his booty with others, accordingly the scavenger reacts aggressively to enemies. First, take out the tracking device on his back. Next is the plasma cell at the rear, which you best blow off.

Ripper horn

Fang

  • Vulnerable to: Frost
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: MU
  • Rideable: no

The horns of the Fire Ripper are the strongest weapon of the machine. They can snap in close combat and additionally fire projectiles at you. So make sure that you remove these parts first. A well-aimed shot with a fire arrow at the tan container on its back is also very effective.

Snap Mouth

Snap Mouth

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Shock
  • Resistant to: Frost, firewater
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

A machine crocodile that packs a punch, as it not only attacks with its powerful jaws, but also with its tail. Aim for its lower neck area to explode the cooling juice pouch and reduce the risk of you being hit by frost attacks.

Sunwing

Sunwing

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater
  • Resistant to: Plasma
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: GEMINI
  • Rideable: no

Among the new machines in Horizon Forbidden West is the Sunwing. With its plasma attacks he definitely knows how to be annoying. Once he has activated his energy shield, you have to take cover quickly! Make sure that you first remove his plasma wing so that he can no longer attack you with plasma attacks. Also, destroy both shield launchers so that the Sunwing can no longer hide behind its shield.

Spiky Snout

Spiky Snout

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, firewater
  • Resistant to: Shock
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

This new machine resembles an anteater, but you should be wary of it. When it feels threatened, it emits clouds of steam that strengthen allies and weaken enemies. Make sure you remove the amplifier pouch on its back so that the spiked snout is more vulnerable to attacks.

Stone Crusher

Stone Crusher

  • Vulnerable to: Shock, Frost
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

You should watch out for this machine in Horizon Forbidden West, because it is an excellent digger. The stone crusher moves through the soil as fast as lightning and then rushes to the surface. If you stand awkwardly when this happens, the colossus will land right on top of you.

Striker

Striker

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: nothing
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: PSI
  • Rideable: yes

These machines are easy to fight and can be bypassed relatively early on. You can easily sneak up on them without being detected. If you want to take the fight to them, focus on the metal horns first so that the assault attacks are less violent. If you also hit the tan container with a fire arrow, an explosion will follow.

Vole

Vole

  • Vulnerable to: Frost, Acid
  • Resistant to: nothing
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: MU
  • Rideable: no

Burrows don't like to be alone, which is why they are often found in groups. Shoot the thing by the butt or alternatively make it explode. In addition to the two normal burrow models, there are also two more powerful top variants.

All Battle Machines

What do you think battle machines are particularly good at? That's right, attack you and dish it out with everything they've got. They're either nimble and agile like a claw rider, or large and equipped with tremendous power like a tank snapper. Either way, you should be very wary of the machines, as the confrontations with them are tough and you may well only finish off one or two of them on the second or even third attempt.

Bebenzahn

Quake Fang

  • Vulnerable to: Frost
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

The Quake Fang is a brand new machine that appears for the first time in Horizon Forbidden West. The giant war mammoth has already made a great impression in the promo material for the game and can also convince in the game itself. Use ammunition and traps that cause frost damage on this giant. Only with this and a long breath you can bring the tinny pachyderm to its knees.

Grimmhorn

Grimmhorn

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater, Acid
  • Resistant to: Fire, Shock
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: TAU
  • Rideable: no

This dino-like machine has great firepower - literally! It shoots huge clouds of fire from its horns, like a flamethrower. You should focus on them first and shoot them down with the help of acid or firewater ammunition. Once you've done that, head for the glowing red hole at the base of the tail. This is where the Grimmhorn is most vulnerable to damage.

Claw Rider

Claw Rider

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Acid
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: yes

There are six variants of this as well, three of which are top claw striders - making them even more robust and dangerous. The battle machine poses a threat due to its agility and is proficient at executing quick attacks in succession. Tear off the blade tail to disable tail attacks - you can also use the component to upgrade your weapons and outfits.

Armor Snapper

Armor Snapper

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Acid
  • Resistant to: Frost, Plasma
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

The name suggests it already, because the armor of this machine lets nothing through so fast. You should therefore first loosen the armor bolts so that the armor cover falls off, exposing the more sensitive areas underneath - such as the kinetic dynamo, which deals heavy damage to the armor snapper as soon as you hit it.

Phantom

Phantom

  • Vulnerable to: Acid, Plasma
  • Resistant to: Fire, Shock, Firewater
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: none
  • Rideable: no

This futuristic machine fires projectiles with quite some accuracy. If you manage to shoot the pulse cannon, you can use it yourself and use it against the Phantom. If you hit the regeneration unit, you'll prevent the machine from reattaching blasted nanoplates and protecting itself. The main focus, however, is the Control Nexus: a processor that takes a lot of damage unprotected.

Pirscher

Pirscher

  • Vulnerable to: Shock
  • Resistant to: Fire, Acid
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

These combat machines were already among the most annoying in Horizon Zero Dawn. They place mines on the ground, sneak up on you in stealth mode, and attack you with tremendous agility. And because that's not corrosive enough, they are strong in both melee and ranged combat. So make sure you place a few shock damage traps around you to incapacitate the stalker. If he lies motionless on the ground, quickly remove the cloaking generator so that the stalker can no longer make himself invisible.

By the way: A stalker rarely comes alone ..

Battle spine

Battle Back

  • Susceptible to: Frost, fire water
  • Resistant to: Fire, shock, acid, plasma
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

The Battle Ridge is one of the heaviest machines in Horizon Forbidden West. When you take on this colossus, you should not only have enough frost and firewater ammo, but also healing potions, meals and healing berries.

You should constantly shoot it with arrows and bombs, and also bring it to its knees with traps on the ground. However, the machine won't make it easy for you, because in addition to shock attacks, it will also fire massive plasma damage at you, which will do some nasty damage.

Serpentine Tooth

Snake Tooth

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Frost, Plasma
  • Resistant to: Shock, Firewater, Acid
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

The snake has some attacks in its luggage, which can really hurt you. It's best to take advantage of the moments when the snake has wrapped itself around an object and remains in one place. It will then fire acid and shock attacks at you, but you'll have enough time to hit it. Take off the Earth Fang to get an upgrade raw material. Also, focus the detonator, the extinguishing water canister as well as the acid canister to trigger chain reactions.

Fright Wings

Frightwing

  • Vulnerable to: Fire
  • Resistant to: Frost, Shock, Acid
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

Hopefully you brought a little time with you, because this heavy fighting machine has a lot to oppose you. The Terrifying Wing has several small parts that are hard to hit, but do massive damage to you - such as the lightning bolts on its ears that disorient you, or the metal teeth that are very strong in close combat. There's also an itty-bitty cloaking generator on its belly, which you should also blow off so that the frightwing doesn't disappear back into its environment.

Thunder Jaw

Thunder Jaw

  • Vulnerable to: Acid
  • Resistant to: Fire, frost, shock, firewater, plasma
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

The Thunder Jaw was already a strong enemy in Horizon Zero Dawn, and that hasn't changed in Horizon Forbidden West. Both in ranged and melee combat, this machine is extremely unpleasant. Destroy the tail to get upgrade raw materials for weapons and outfits on the one hand, and to weaken the melee attacks on the other. Also, quickly eliminate the disc launcher, since the flying explosive discs are annoying and don't exactly cause little damage if you don't jump aside in time.

Once these disruptive factors are eliminated, you can pounce on the heart of the thunder jaw. If this is exposed, it means the quick demise of the machine.

Petrel

Petrel

  • Vulnerable to: Acid, Plasma
  • Resistant to: Fire, Shock
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: KAPPA
  • Rideable: no

When this giant flies over you, the earth shakes! So keep a low profile when sneaking around in his area - with the Falling attacks are not to be trifled with. His shock attacks can keep you on the ground for a long time. If the machine then follows up with close attacks, it doesn't look good for you.

Versenger

Versenger

  • Vulnerable to: Frost, Shock
  • Resistant to: Fire
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

Not too big, but all the more annoying are scorchers. You should especially remove the mine launcher on its back and aim it against it. With enough frost and shock damage, you'll quickly put an end to the Versenger.

Devastator

Devastator

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater, Acid
  • Resistant to: Frost, Shock
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

Nasty little machines that make your life difficult. Therefore, when attacking, focus on the Strangler Cannon, as it deals the most damage. If you succeed, you can pick up the cannon itself and fire it at your enemies with the energy bolts.

Corrupter

Corrupter

  • Vulnerable to: Fire
  • Resistant to: Berserker
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: none
  • Rideable: no

A nasty war machine that still comes from the old world. Especially their fire attacks are quite something. Your focus should therefore be to shoot the spiked launcher first to avoid the ranged attacks. Also not to be sneezed at is the grenade launcher, which drops several grenades, which in turn ignite the ground after hitting it.

All Transport Machines

Sure, when it comes to carrying items from A to B, transport machines are made for that. Tank walkers or howlers already existed in the predecessor Horizon Zero Dawn. In Horizon Forbidden West, another example of this type is added in the form of the rolling back - and it knows how to defend itself in case of doubt.

Behemoth

Behemoth

  • Vulnerable to: Fire, Acid
  • Resistant to: Frost, Shock
  • Difficulty: hard
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

From the looks alone, the Behemoth shows that this machine is not good to eat cherries with. Once it has set its sights on Aloy and is in attack mode, it's best to keep a very long distance from the Behemoth. It can throw large chunks of rock in your direction.

Howler Ridge

Roar Ridge

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater
  • Resistant to: Acid
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

Be careful, hot and greasy! The roaring back can be filled with different liquids: acid or extinguishing water. Your goal is to burst the huge container on its back or blow off the area on its collar. If you succeed, you have almost defeated the machine. However, the roaring back not only pockets, but also distributes with acid spit quite powerfully.

Tank walker

Tank Wanderer

  • Vulnerable to: Acid
  • Resistant to:Fire, Shock
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: CHI
  • Rideable: no

These crab-like machines protect their cargo on their backs by any means necessary. They have a shield that they hold in front of them, and in their arms are integrated firearms with shock damage. Good timing is needed here so that you shoot just when the shield is down and the tank walkers are busy reloading.

Rollback

Rollback

  • Vulnerable to: Acid
  • Resistant to: Frost, Shock
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

As the name of this transport machine suggests, one of the strongest attacks of the Rollback is when it contracts like a woodlouse and rolls towards you - jump to the side in time. In addition, the rollerback spits rocks at you from a great distance, as well as sticky bombs.

Jumping bat

Jump Bat

  • Vulnerable to: Firewater
  • Resistant to: Shock
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Hatchery: IOTA
  • Rideable: no

As enemies, the Jumping Beaters are the easiest of all transport machines to defeat. However, you should be careful of their powerful legs, because they can really hit you. With the right ammunition and a trap or two, you'll finish them off in no time. Especially if you hit the acid canister on his back, which triggers a chain reaction.
