Call of Duty Modern Warfare Splitscreen: This is how it works

Before the era of online multiplayer, split-screen mode was standard in first-person shooters on consoles. Nowadays, this option for local multiplayer games is unfortunately rarely found. In Call of Duty Modern Warfare, however, the classic mode still exists. We will now explain to you what is possible and what is not possible in Call of Duty Modern Warfare Splitscreen.

In this guide to CoD Modern Warfare you will learn:

  • Which preparations are necessary for playing in split screen
  • How to activate the splitscreen
  • Which game modes are supported

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Splitscreen: Before you start

Before you can play CoD Modern Warfare in splitscreen, you have to prepare a few things. You can't just plug in a second controller and start playing right away. First of all, your gaming partner must have their own PSN or Xbox Live account.

If your friend already has one from his own console, he can log into his account directly on PlayStation or Xbox with the second controller. If your friend doesn't have a PSN or Xbox Live account yet, you can easily create an account on the respective console. Unfortunately, the splitscreen mode doesn't work with a guest account.

But that's not all. In addition, an Activision account is mandatory for both of you - even if you only want to play locally and not online. If your friend is a Call of Duty veteran, he will already have an Activision account anyway. For those who haven't played with the shooter series before, you can either create the required account directly from the game or go to the official website.

If you want to play online multiplayer with your partner in split screen, at least you, as the host of the party, must have a valid PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription. Fortunately, your fellow player does not need a subscription. The multiplayer subscriptions for PlayStation and Xbox should ideally have been taken out beforehand. But if you need a subscription in a hurry, you can easily get memberships forand here.

And what about split screen on PC?

Unfortunately we have to disappoint you. It is not possible to play Modern Warfare in splitscreen on the PC. The fact that PC games are now also played with controllers and on large displays doesn't seem to have reached the developers yet. That's why splitscreen modes are still a rarity on the PC.

CoD Modern Warfare Splitscreen: These game modes are supported

The activation of the splitscreen in Call of Duty Modern Warfare is quite uncomplicated after all the preparations. Your game partner simply logs in to the second controller with his account on the console. He can either do this in the main menu of the console or in the main menu of Modern Warfare. In the game, a note will appear in the upper right corner that the second player can log in by pressing a button. On PS4 and PS5, press the X button, and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, press the A button.

Now select the multiplayer mode. Unfortunately, you can't play the campaign and co-op modes together in splitscreen. And there are further restrictions, because not all game types support split-screen gaming in multiplayer mode, either. These include Ground War, Free for All, and 10vs10. If you have these game types enabled, the game will tell you that these modes do not support split-screen and force you to disable them in the filter list.

If you have the green light, you can simply search for an online match. If you'd rather keep to yourself and train a bit with bots, you can also host a local match in the Custom Game menu item.

When playing offline in splitscreen, you can either fight 1vs1 duels or fill up the teams with bots.
