In this tips guide to Marvel's Avengers you will learn:

  • What game modes are available and what makes them different
  • What you have to consider when putting together a team
  • Tips & tricks for all superheroes

After the Avengers have become the most popular comic book heroes of our time through several movies, you can now slip into the skin of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Co. in Marvel's Avengers to kick the bad guys' asses yourself.

The action title for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One offers not only an extensive solo campaign, but also an extensive multiplayer part, in which the interaction of the heroes, but also the constant improvement of equipment and abilities play an important role. So that you know right from the start how everything works together best, our guide gives you some helpful tips.

What are the game modes in Marvel's Avengers?

The first decision you'll have to make when starting Marvel's Avengers () is the choice of game mode. Here there are two:

  • Campaign: this is the single-player mode that will let you experience a story of around eight hours - starring Kamala Khan. She wants to bring the Avengers back together. Basically, the campaign serves as an extended tutorial for the multiplayer mode - the focus of Marvel's Avengers.
  • Avengers Initiative: The co-op mode is the heart of Marvel's Avengers, which you can play online with up to three other players (or with AI support if there aren't enough friends available). Although you can also start the online mode directly, we recommend playing the solo campaign first. On the one hand, the story of the multiplayer takes place after the events of the campaign, and on the other hand, you will then be familiar with all the game mechanics.

What types of missions are there in multiplayer?

In multiplayer mode, the fight against the nasty AIM organization in Marvel's Avengers will take you around the world and send you on various missions. These differ not only in the mission objectives, but also in the difficulty and thus the possible rewards.

  • Harm Training: these are training missions in which you can try out all the available heroes.
  • Drop Zones: These missions are rather short and have only one mission objective, such as protecting a base or sabotaging an AIM facility.

  • Iconic mission: these missions deal with the effects of the story campaign. There are also levels that deal with a specific Avenger.
  • Faction mission: in these missions you'll support either SHIELD or the Inhumans. This is how you advance the story of the factions, but more importantly, you get experience for each faction as a reward and rank up with them.
  • Hives: Hives are AIM fortresses that you must first find in order to disable them and earn rewards.
  • Vaults: To find Vaults, you must learn their location by opening hidden SHIELD boxes in the game world. The Vaults themselves are large levels where you have to fight your way in and then through to collect massive rewards.
  • Mega Hives: This is very difficult end-game content. The further you progress, the tougher your enemies become. Also, once all the Avengers go down, you'll have to start the level all over again.

Hulk is great as a tank, taking damage, while Thor attacks from the air and a safe distance.

  • Villain Sector: Also risky ventures are these fights against powerful bosses. Here it is recommended not to approach before power level 150.
  • AIM's Secret Lab: These missions are only available once a week and can only be started if you have reached power level 150. The Secret Labs will eventually throw everything Marvel's Avengers has to offer at your feet, including a tough boss fight at the end.

The most important tips for the co-op mode

As mentioned before, we recommend starting the co-op mode of Marvel's Avengers only after you have played through the solo campaign. Nevertheless, there are a few tips we want to give you when you go into battle with friends:

At the start of Marvel's Avengers, there are six different heroes to choose from. However, developer Crystal Dynamics promises that new characters will be added over time.

However, since you can only go out as a team of four players, pay attention to the composition of the characters. You can combine freely, but there are heroes that complement others with their abilities. This makes a difference, especially in the harder missions.

Especially in such boss fights, the right team composition is important so that you have harmonizing heroes and abilities at hand.

A good example configuration is when you put together a team of Captain America, Black Widow, Kamala Khan and Iron Man. This way you'll have Captain America on your team as a tank who can draw enemy attacks to himself, while Black Widow supports with ranged combat, Kamala Khan heals, and Iron Man attacks from the air.

In this example, Iron Man can also be replaced with Thor, or Captain America with Hulk. In missions with a lot of flying enemies, Thor would be a good choice instead of Kamala Khan, since he can also support from the air.

Bonus tip: Don't worry if you can't get a full team of three teammates together. Missing teammates are replaced with AI colleagues , so you can also play with just one friend or even alone.

How do the heroes differ?

Marvel's Avengers comes with six different characters at launch. They differ in their abilities and how they play. Here's an overview:

  • Kamala Khan: Is well suited for close combat, as she can hit multiple enemies at once. However, her "rubber arms" also work as ranged weapons. She also has a healing ability that can even revive downed teammates later on.
  • Captain America: Captain America is very good as a tank to draw enemy attacks to himself. His skills can be upgraded to the point where he can later deflect ranged attacks and hurl them back at enemies. He can also hit distant opponents with his shield throw, and with the Rallying Call ability, marked enemies suffer additional damage.

  • IronMan: Iron Man is perfect for taking out flying opponents, as he can whiz through the air himself as well. He also has the powerful armor Hulkbuster, which not only he, but any hero can use. For this, he can trigger an energy wave that briefly shocks enemies, making them easier to attack. He himself can briefly protect himself with an energy shield to escape from dicey situations.
  • Black Widow: Black Widow is especially designed for ranged combat. However, she can swing through the area with a grappling hook or pull herself up to flying opponents. This way you can overcome the distance to the opponent very quickly. Also helpful is the ability to make herself and other heroes invisible for a short time.
  • Thor: Thor can also fly and is therefore especially suitable for aerial support. In addition, he has abilities that automatically deflect enemy attacks or he can hurl his hammer at distant baddies. Also powerful and helpful is his attack teleport. In this, you decide where he appears on the battlefield and then unleashes a powerful energy wave against his enemies.

Iron Man can also race through the air, making him ideal for taking out flying enemies.

  • Hulk: Hulk is also perfect as a tank, because with the Bone Shaker ability, he draws all nearby enemies to him. To make sure he doesn't go straight to the ground in the process, an ability helps him heal more the more you play offensively. At the same time, his powerful melee attacks deal out decent damage. He can even grab opponents and use them as a weapon.

Tips & tricks about the combat system in Marvel's Avengers

Now that you have a lot of information about the game modes and heroes in Marvel's Avengers at your fingertips, here are a few basic tips about the combat system.

Attacks come in two varieties in the basic state: the light strike and the strong strike. The light attacks work wonderfully as a standard attack. Be careful with stronger enemies, though, because they will parry your attacks skillfully if you always use the same one. In such cases, it helps if you hold down the strong attack. Then it will charge up and break through the opponent's cover.

Also note that every character in Marvel's Avengers has a ranged attack. For some - like Black Widow or Iron Man - this is obvious. However, even Hulk can attack distant adversaries by throwing a rock, while Captain America hurls his shield.

But: don't rely too much on the ranged attacks, because stronger enemies often repel them, and besides, they are slower than the melee options. Also, the range of Kamala Khan and Hulk's ranged attacks is very limited.

To escape enemy attacks, dodge. To do this, you can press the button once, which will make your hero duck away briefly and fizzle out weaker attacks. If you press the button twice, your hero will roll further away, which works well against strong blows. Hold down the dodge button in front of an enemy to jump over them and attack from behind.
