Just Cause 4 Guide: Important tips, tricks & info about the game

In our guide to Just Cause 4 you will learn, among other things:

  • How to unlock the fast travel
  • How to quickly collect a lot of chaos & liberate areas
  • For which platforms the game is available
  • What has changed compared to the predecessor

In the fictional Latin American state of Solís, Rico Rodriguez causes a lot of chaos. In our big overview of the action game, we have compiled all the information on Just Cause 4 for you and give you the most important tips for the start: How do you use the grappling hook correctly? How do the supply deliveries work? How do you wreak havoc quickly? You can find out all this and much more here.

Fast movement from A to B: Can't be done on foot

The world of Just Cause 4 is beautiful and designed with a lot of details. However, we would still strongly advise you not to walk to the next mission. There's a simple reason for this: if in doubt, you'll be on the road forever.

As beautifully designed as the world of Solís is, it is also very large. If you don't mind long walks - occasionally accompanied by the crash of distant explosions - you can start running. Otherwise, we'd advise you to grab a car instead.

Spoiler: The car won't protect you from the tornado.

There area lot of unused vehicles in the game world, waiting for you to take them. Pulling a driver out of his vehicle a bit roughly and then getting behind the wheel works just as well. Another important tool for getting around quickly is Rico's grappling hook, which we'll discuss in the next section.

The grappling hook: This is how you use the universal tool

The grappling hook has accompanied Rico Rodriguez for a long time, but in Just Cause 4 it gets additional functions. This makes the gadget almost a universal tool for freeing Solís.

You don't just swing over slopes or from one building to another with the hook anymore. You can even use it to shoot thrust missiles and airlifters, which we'll tell you more about in a moment. In combination with the parachute, the grappling hook is also ideal for gaining new momentum and thus gliding even further.

But back to the thrust rockets: You'll get them - as well as airlifters - automatically at the beginning of Just Cause 4 when you complete Javi's first mission. You can use them to open particularly difficult gates, for example, but also to literally push enemies out of the way. With the grappling hook, we also protect ourselves from falling damage by looking for a new attachment point for the hook during long falls.

You can customize the grappling hook to your needs with mods and settings.

The air jacks rico Rodriguez gets in the first mission you do for the rebel Sargento. After docking the connection, they form small balloons that lift obstacles, enemies or enemy vehicles out of your path. Numerous mods and different settings allow you to customize the grappling hook according to your needs.

Weapons & Firefights: How to take down the Black Hand

In Just Cause 4, the Black Hand is an extremely well-equipped private army led by Gabriela Morales. Her men don't just bluntly stand in your way and shoot what the magazine has to offer. They have a lot more tricks up their sleeves.

Some of the soldiers camouflage themselves so that you can only perceive them as a faint flicker - others are equipped with strong body armor or a mobile shield. Circumnavigate these enemies or deal with them with the grappling hook.

Other toys come into play with the heavily armored enemies. Many of the weapons in Just Cause 4 have secondary functions. This means that some assault rifles also fire grenades and a sniper rifle can be a rocket launcher. Even with that, you might need several shots at the tanks, but eventually even they will fall down.

In Just Cause 4 you can again blow up a lot of stuff.

If Rico gets hit hard, however, you should of course keep your head down as quickly as possible. If there are only one or two enemies left and you'd rather take your chances, the game will help you out: It clearly highlights enemies in color, making it easier for you to aim in the death match.

How the new supply deliveries work

Just Cause 3 already featured the so-called "rebel drops", which provided you with supplies almost randomly somewhere in the landscape. This system has been reworked for Just Cause 4 and is now called Supply Drops. You now determine with millimeter precision where the crate will be dropped and even in which direction it will point. This way you can drive or fly directly in the right direction and don't have to turn around first.

In principle, you can get every weapon and every vehicle in Just Cause 4 right in front of you via the supply deliveries. However, you'll have to unlock them first, of course. You can find out what you need to do in the supply menu.

Collect Chaos to move the front with more squads.

Note, however, that you can't permanently order one supply after another from the menu. Instead, there is a cool-down - the pilots who bring you the deliveries have to refuel in between.

Collect a lot of chaos quickly and liberate areas

Of course, in Just Cause 4 you'll once again pursue the task of causing a lot of chaos. However, this time it serves a purpose, so of course it pays to step on the gas at this point in the game.

Rico's chaos bar fills up, of course, especially when you destroy Black Hand installations. Satellite dishes or radio towers are highlighted in color so that you can recognize them from a distance.

The really valuable buildings are located in the private army's bases of operation. Here you'll have to shoot your way through a lot of cannon fodder, but these liberation missions are always worth it. You can see that just by looking at the fact that there is only one of these bases in each region.

The liberation missions are marked on the map and include (besides the actually optional destruction) for example the liberation of prisoners, which you then have to escort safely out of the base. However, this is less strenuous than it sounds at first.

Through the chaos you cause, you collect new troops for your own army, which is unsurprisingly called the Army of Chaos. On the map you can see how many troop reserves you currently have available and also how many troops you need to move the front.

Why should you do this? On the one hand, you'll ensure that the Black Hand's presence in the rebel regions will weaken and you'll be able to travel through Solís more easily.

In addition, by conquering some regions you'll get additional pilots, which means more supplies and makes your life easier, for example in the story missions. Especially when you face the extreme weather conditions here.

Unlock fast travel: How it works

What you will miss at the beginning of Just Cause 4 is the fast travel function. You'll have to earn it first - just like the resupply deliveries. To unlock the feature, you'll have to start the mission "Project Illapa" in the Wachikuni region.

The Black Hand soldiers are extremely powerful.

However, you won't get the mission until you free the rebels in the Wanay mission. After that, you can have your pilots (Yes, the ones with the supplies.) fly you to places you've already visited.

But beware: Not only the supplies, but also the fast travel has a cool-down in Just Cause 4. So you'd better think about where you're flying to beforehand. Another reason to collect Chaos quickly - you'll get more pilots and free Solís faster.

Danger Rising DLC: How to get the hoverboard in Just Cause 4

On August 29, 2019, the final DLC "Danger Rising" for Just Cause 4 was released. In addition to eight new missions, the DLC also brings a lot of new vehicles to the game. Among them is a hoverboard.

You can find the hoverboard during the first mission "Old Friends and New Enemies" in the hovercraft at the dock. As soon as you arrive there, a cutscene will start, after which you will be allowed to try out the hoverboard.

What is the story of Just Cause 4 about?

Once again you take on the role of Rico Rodriguez, who has left the agency behind after the events of the third part and is now acting on his own. He finds himself in the fictional Latin American state of Solís, which is home to the headquarters of the Black Hand.

The Black Hand is an extremely well-equipped private army, which Rico has already had to deal with time and again in the prequels - although here they were still up to their mischief as mercenaries. Solís, however, is completely at their mercy and is waiting to be freed.

The main obstacle to Rico's liberation is Gabriela Morales, who commands the forces of the Black Hand in Just Cause 4. However, he is assisted by allies and the army of chaos, which grows larger as it progresses.

In the sandstorm, the Grappling Hook mods are worth their weight in gold.

But it is not only the Black Hand that has led Rico to Solís: He follows the trail of his father, who was involved in the organization's machinations and is probably even partly responsible for the extreme weather conditions there.

What innovations does the gameplay of Just Cause 4 offer?

Blowing up everything that is highlighted in color and shooting enemies over the top: Of course, Just Cause 4 doesn't shake these basic mechanics of the series. The grappling hook, Rico's versatile gadget, also makes a comeback.

However, Just Cause 4 offers more customization options to make the hook more versatile. More active connections ensure that you're more flexible in its use and can get into even more mischief.

This time, the grappling hook is directly equipped with the thrust missiles that were already present in Just Cause 3. So you can simply fire them, just like other connections. The air-lift feature is new: these connections create small balloons that lift objects - including enemies - for you. The heavier the object, the more lifters you need.

Using different configurations and mods, you can influence the grappling hook's features in heaps of different directions. Whether objects should rise infinitely or hover at a certain height is only the tip of the iceberg in Just Cause 4.

But it's not just the grappling hook that has been enhanced: The rebel drops from Just Cause 3 are now called "resupply deliveries." After a certain point in the story, you have the option of ordering weapons, vehicles and other items directly to your feet at any time.

After that, Just Cause 4 offers a cool-down - but the bigger your army of chaos is, the more pilots you get to help you out with supplies. Unlike in Just Cause 3, you can now determine the exact drop point of the delivery and even its orientation.

Thanks to this feature, you won't even have to turn around with a delivered car. In the corresponding menu you'll see what is deliverable and how to unlock all other items.

What has changed in vehicles compared to Just Cause 3?

Vehicles have been part of the Just Cause series in the past, and accordingly they can't be missing in Just Cause 4. You can sneak through Solís in a rickety mill that you stole from a poor civilian. However, you also have fast-as-an-arrow racing cars at your disposal.

Rico has an antidote for the armored vehicles of the Black Hand.

You also have a choice of aircraft: from well-armored helicopters to ultralight aircraft, you have almost all options here as well. Handling has been significantly improved for all vehicles. In addition, there is a better developed road network that allows for faster driving.

So that you don't just hear the roar of the engine, there are now several radio stations to choose from. In addition to the normal vehicles, there are vehicles with additional abilities. These include a helicopter with a giant magnet, a car transporter, a giant crane with an extendable arm or a bulldozer with a shovel.

How do the battles work and what do the weapons offer?

Nothing changes in the classic third-person mechanics in Just Cause 4 (), nevertheless the developers have noticeably reworked and improved the gameplay. Both the selection of weapons and the variety of enemies is greater than ever before.

With the wingsuit, you can do a lot of nonsense in the whirlwind.

To make combat feel smoother, there's now rear sight aiming and secondary functions on many weapons. For example, defender machine guns can be converted into turrets. There is also a sniper rifle that fires rockets.

For the Black Hand enemies, you'll have to use camouflage abilities, extremely strong armor, and more or mobile shields. Fortunately, Just Cause 4 offers you the appropriate toys for Rico Rodriguez.

Extreme natural events: Tornado, sandstorm & co.

As already briefly mentioned in the story, extreme weather conditions prevail on Solís. To be more precise, four natural phenomena can be found here:

  • Tornado
  • Sandstorm
  • Snowstorm
  • Tropical storm

Not only are they visually impressive, but they even interact with the game world in a physically correct way. As the tornado mills through the landscape, it actually pulls up objects that get in its way. And Rico can parachute or wingsuit into the eye of the storm or simply be carried away.

The sandstorm not only limits visibility, but also pushes moving elements through the area. This includes enemies, of course. They'll disappear never to be seen again if you equip them with an airlifter or thruster and then let the storm do the rest.
