Far Cry 5 tips: How to hunt grizzly bears, skunks & Co.

In Far Cry 5, which was released on March 27, 2018 for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, you'll find yourself in the fictional Hope County in Montana. As an aspiring sheriff, you'll have to put a stop to the religious fanatics of the Eden's Gate sect and their leader Joseph Seed.

But the missions you'll have to carry out, the silos you'll have to destroy and the wolf bait you'll have to track down aren't the only things you'll have to do.

You can also just go fishing to earn money and increase your cash. Or you can head out into the forest and hunt some of the many other animals that are native to Hope County.

Below we'll give you tips on how to successfully hunt grizzly bears, skunks or white-tailed deer in Far Cry 5.

How do I find the right hunting ground in Far Cry 5?

With Hope County, Ubisoft has created an open world that is as extensive as it is varied. While Holland Valley in the southwest includes more rural areas with farms, the Whitetail Mountains in the north are mountainous and crossed by rivers.

Just as varied as the landscape is the animal kingdom in Far Cry 5's virtual North America. You'll find grizzly bears and black bears, moose, wolverines, skunks, ducks, fish and so on in Hope County. Each species has its own habitat in the game world, and you can target the hunting ground you want to go to.

To find the right corner in the game to hunt a particular animal, you must first explore the open world. Keep your eyes open, because there are always signs along the roads that show you which animals are native to the area.

Once you've explored an area and found the hunting grounds, you can always look them up on the map in Far Cry 5. As soon as you've zoomed in far enough, brown icons will appear, which indicate what has its habitat here and there with an animal symbol.

Note that grizzly bears and black bears look almost the same, as do pronghorns and white-tailed deer. There are no different icons for the different fish species that Far Cry 5 contains. Here, you always have to mouse-over the icon and read up on which aquatic inhabitants you can expect.

What is the best way to hunt in Far Cry 5?

Once you have decided which prey animal you want to target, the hunt itself is relatively easy - but at the same time a matter of luck.

Just because you're stomping around in the habitat of a grizzly bear doesn't automatically mean that you'll meet Master Squeal every five meters. Just like in real life, you'll have to be patient in some cases in Far Cry 5.

A good hunting strategy is to stay away from the streets and strike through the woods. There, the probability is higher that a skunk or a deer is on the way.

If you're hunting a predator, you can also try throwing out a decoy. These are actually meant to be used to sic wolves, cougars & co. on your opponents. But in a black bear hunting ground, such a lure can ensure that a paw bearer will show up. However, it is not a guarantee.

By the way, you have to be extremely careful with predators, because the beasts attack you as soon as you shoot at them in Far Cry 5. Fleeing animals, on the other hand - such as deer - take flight, so you should hurry up when hunting them.

What do you have to keep in mind?

When you go hunting to increase your cash, it's always best to bring undamaged prey to the merchants. If you have to kill certain animals for a quest, this is the default anyway.

Therefore, you should only kill your prey with regular firearms or bows and arrows. In Far Cry 5, if you use explosives or a rocket launcher, throw bombs from an airplane, or drive over your prey, you'll only get damaged skins and the like. You can still sell these, but you'll get much less money for them. These are not useful for quests anyway.

Those of you who want to hunt a lot should unlock two skills as early as possible in Far Cry 5: Harvest Master and Jungle King.

With these, you can get twice as much loot from the animals (Harvest Master) and predators do less damage when they attack you (Jungle King). We have prepared an overview of all abilities in the game for you elsewhere.

And finally, a tip for all those who sometimes can't find their prey in the undergrowth after it's been killed: Before you run around wildly and search the area, look at the compass at the top of the screen. There, an X indicates the direction of the carcass you're looking for, so you can find it more easily.

What do I do with the loot?

Once you have spent some time in Hope County and have killed animals, the question arises as to what you can do with the loot.

In the case that you had to hunt certain animals for a quest, Far Cry 5 will show you in the quest progress when you have fulfilled the requirement. Then go to the client and simply deliver the loot.

If, on the other hand, you were only hunting to make money, then visit any store. Whether it's a weapon, car or helicopter dealer, they will all take the goods from you for cash.

In the trade menu, simply select the item "Sell loot". There you can choose what you want to sell or you can simply sell everything at once. As a rule, you won't need the items in Far Cry 5.
