Introduction

In general terms, both the senator and the congressman are representatives of the people in the political sphere. However, there are significant differences in their responsibilities and functions within the government.

Senator

The senator is a member of the Senate of the Republic, which is a branch of the legislative branch in charge of approving and modifying laws. In Mexico, each state and Mexico City have three senators who represent their interests. Among the senator's responsibilities are:

• Vote and debate on legislative initiatives.
• Participate in legislative commissions.
• Represent your state or district before the government.

The term of a senator is six years and they are elected every three years. The Senate of the Republic is chaired by a president, who is elected from among its members.

Types of senators

There are two types of senators:

1. Majority senator: is the candidate who obtains the greatest number of votes in the elections.
2. Proportional representation senator: is one who is assigned by the number of votes obtained by his political party in the elections.

Congressman

A congressman is a member of the Chamber of Deputies, which is another branch of the legislative branch responsible for generating laws and approving the budget. Deputies represent the citizens of their electoral district in the Lower House of the Congress of the Union, which is made up of 500 members.

The responsibilities of congressmen include:

• Analyze legislative initiatives and endorse or reject them.
• Monitor government performance.
• Push for resource allocation for your district.

The term of a deputy is three years, and they are elected every three years. The Chamber of Deputies is presided over by a president, who is elected from among its members.

Types of congressmen

As with senators, there are two types of deputies:

1. Majority deputy: is the candidate who obtains the greatest number of votes in the elections.
2. Proportional representation deputy: is one who is assigned by the number of votes obtained by his political party in the elections.

Conclusions

Although both senators and congressmen have the responsibility of representing the people and designing laws, their roles and responsibilities are slightly different. Senators tend to work on national initiatives and bills, and focus on the interests of their states or regions. On the other hand, congressmen tend to focus on the needs of the electoral district they represent.
