Phytoplankton and Zooplankton

Plankton is a group of living things that float in the surface waters of the ocean or other bodies of water. It is divided into two main groups, the phytoplankton and zoooplankton.

Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton are made up of photosynthetic organisms, mainly unicellular algae and photosynthetic bacteria. These beings are capable of converting solar energy into chemical energy, which allows them to produce their own food. (autotrophs).

Phytoplankton is an essential source of food for aquatic animals and is responsible for the production of 50% of the oxygen on planet Earth. It also plays an important role in regulating the global climate.

zooplankton

On the other hand, zooplankton is made up of animals that float in water and feed on phytoplankton and other organisms. The animals that make up zooplankton are very varied, from small crustaceans to jellyfish or small fish. (heterotrophs).

Zooplankton are, in turn, a source of food for other animals at higher trophic levels, such as fish and whales. It also plays an important role in regulation of the chain food in aquatic ecosystems (biocenosis).
