Difference between twilight and sunset

  • Nautical twilight: Extends from the end of civil twilight to the time when the center of the sun is 12° below the horizon. In this interval, darkness increases and it becomes difficult to distinguish the horizon,⁢ but it is still possible to see some bright stars and planets.
  • astronomical twilight: Spans from the end of nautical twilight until the center of the sun is 18° below the horizon. At this point, the darkness is almost total and most of the stars and celestial objects can be observed.
