A lion stalks a zebra and finally kills it with a bite in the neck. The lion then eats the zebra's meat to get energy and nutrients.

What is parasitism?

Parasitism is a relationship in which a living being, called a parasite, lives at the expense of another living being, called a host. Parasites feed on the host's blood, tissue, or other nutrients without killing it. The host may suffer damage or disease, but does not die immediately as in predation. Some examples of parasites are fleas, ticks, and lice.

Example of parasitism:

A flea attaches itself to a dog's skin and feeds on its blood. The flea does not kill the dog, but it can cause itching and illness if there is a severe infestation.

Differences between predation and parasitism

• In predation, the predator kills and consumes its prey, while in parasitism the parasite does not kill the host.
• The goal of predation is to get food, while the goal of parasitism is to get a safe place to live and/or get nutrients from the host.
• In predation, the predator is usually much larger and more powerful than the prey, while in parasitism the parasite is smaller than the host.
• In predation, the prey dies immediately, while in parasitism the death of the host may be slow and gradual.
