Difference between gazelle and antelope

What is a gazelle?

Gazelles are a group of small antelopes found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. These animals are known for their speed and elegance, being one of the most popular prey for predators.

What is an antelope?

The antelope, for its part, is a generic word that is used to describe any member of the family Bovidae other than a sheep, goat, or buffalo. This family includes animals such as impala, African buffalo, wildebeest and zebra.

Differences between gazelles and antelopes

Size

In general, gazelles are smaller than antelopes. Most gazelles are between 80 and 100 cm tall and weigh between 30 and 60 kg. While antelopes can measure up to 2 meters tall and weigh more than 800 kg.

Horns

Gazelles have short, curved horns, while antelopes have longer, spiral-shaped or straight-line horns.

Habitat

Gazelles prefer open habitats, such as plains and deserts. On the other hand, antelopes can live in a wide variety of habitats, from grasslands to forests.

Behavior

Gazelles are more solitary and prefer to run to escape predators, while antelopes usually live in herds and aggressively defend themselves against predators.

Conclusions

Although gazelles and antelopes may look similar, there are big differences between them. From size to behavior, each one has unique characteristics that make them different.
