The remake of Resident Evil 3 () is finally here, giving the conclusion of the Raccoon City trilogy a modern makeover - a process that began back in 2002 with the remake of the first Resident Evil ().

However, not much has changed in the basic premise: The T-virus has broken out in the US metropolis Raccoon City and is now turning all inhabitants - whether human or animal - into bloodthirsty zombies. In the role of Jill Valentine, you fight your way through the chaos and try to escape from the city together with the Umbrella mercenary Carlos Oliveira. We have put together the best tips and tricks for you in this guide so that you can succeed in your escape.

Item management in Resident Evil 3

Item management plays a big role in Resident Evil 3, of course. First things first: Jill can hold a maximum of eight items at the beginning. If your inventory is full, you'll either have to throw an item away - irrevocably - or store it in an item box in one of the safe rooms.

At first, you'll have to cope with the severely limited inventory, but later in the game you'll find several belt pouches that expand your inventory by two slots each. Our Resident Evil 3 puzzle guide tells you how to get two of the coveted belt pouches.

In the inventory you can assign weapons to an DeepL access

To save yourself unnecessary running through the zombie-infested streets and stores, check before each trip what items you absolutely have to take with you and what items you might find. Regardless of the number of item slots, you should always have the following equipment with you:

  • A pistol including ammo (two slots).
  • A large healing item - first aid spray or a red-green herb mixture (one slot).
  • One - reloaded - heavy weapon, such as the shotgun or an emergency weapon, such as the combat knife or a few grenades (One Slot).
  • Optional: Ammunition for the heavy weapon (One slot)

While exploring the game world, see if items can be combined immediately. For example, if you have a gunpowder with you and then find another gunpowder, combine the two on the spot to make pistol ammo. Then combine the new ammo with the ammo you already have and lo and behold, not only do you have more bullets, but you also have a free slot again.

How do I deal with limited resources?

In the apocalypse, ammo and healing are in real short supply. So in order for Jill to escape Raccoon City in one piece, you'll have to make regular decisions. Each time you confront an enemy, you'll face the questions: "Do I kill him now, or should I just shake him for a bit? Or should I even try to run him down?"

At low health, the image takes on a grayish tone.

You can save ammunition by actively avoiding confrontations. If you are not cornered, you should not use heavy weapons against individual zombies. That's a waste, especially since you'll soon have to deal with larger enemies.

When it comes to healing items, the holy commandment applies: Only heal yourself when your health slips to caution (orange) or danger (red). Then only consume large healing items like first aid sprays or herb mixtures - never single herbs! The green miracle herbs achieve a noticeable effect only in combination with another green or red herb.

Tips & tricks for exploration and puzzles

Search every nook and cranny thoroughly and check every area so that you don't miss any (over-)vital resources like ammunition. Exploring isn't without its dangers, but you'll often be rewarded with valuable items like first-aid sprays or even upgrades for your weapons.

Use the map in your inventory to orient yourself and see where items might still be. Blue areas are empty, while there are still undiscovered items in red areas.

The solution to a puzzle is hidden in this poster.

Of course, it wouldn't be a real Resident Evil if half the game world didn't consist of puzzles. There are often clues in the environment, such as circled numbers on an advertising poster for Umbrella's latest sunscreen. Also, read all the documents and notes. There are often hidden clues to the solution of a puzzle - usually even in green letters.

How do I fight the zombies in Resident Evil 3?

If you shoot every zombie, you will regret it at the latest when you meet Nemesis for the first time. Basically, avoid fights and run around as many zombies as possible. On wide streets this is absolutely no problem, as the undead are slow. If you are in a narrow alley, lure the zombies to a more open area if possible.

However, some confrontations cannot be avoided. Still, that doesn't mean you have to grab a weapon right away: Capcom has brought back the dodge system and adapted it to the new controls. Jill can escape enemy attacks with a dodge roll if you press the corresponding button at the right moment.

If you press the target button while dodging, the game also enters a slow-motion mode where Jill targets the head of the attacking automatic enemy - a good opportunity for some headshots.

Crawling zombies are no longer much of a threat.

However, the timing has to be right and there should be no other enemies in the immediate vicinity. The roll is only triggered when you dodge the actual attack. If you try to dodge when the enemy is just about to attack, it's too early and you'll probably get bitten.

The zombies behave the same way as in the remake of Resident Evil 2 () - they are resistant and can reawaken several times despite severe injuries. Headshots are much more effective than in Resident Evil 2, though, thanks to the higher chance of critical hits. To just slow a zombie down, though, it's enough to shoot a leg off. Stab zombies lying on the ground with the - now indestructible - knife to save even more ammo.
