Lost Ark: 6 practical tips for beginners

Lost Ark is considered a tough competitor for Diablo or Path of Exile, but in terms of genre, the game is much more. The game is much more of an MMORPG, which scores with an open world and in which you can fight dungeons and raids as well as collect a lot of loot in the endgame. But there is a long way to go until then. In this guide to Lost Ark, you'll learn:

  • Some simple key combinations to save time
  • Why you should collect Makoko seeds
  • Which quests are worthwhile - and which are not

Strictly speaking, Lost Ark is not that new anymore. Since 2019, the free-2-play title can already be played in South Korea. Now publisher Smilegate is setting its sights on the rest of the world and wants to conquer Russia, Japan, North America and Europe as well. In this country, it will be released under the auspices of Amazon Games - just like New World.

Focus on the main quest

You surely know it from other MMORPGs: While you are following the main story, side quests pop up everywhere that want to be done. But then you also know how much this can slow you down. So, in order to get into the endgame as quickly as possible, we recommend that you focus completely on the main quest.

You can safely ignore the smaller tasks for now. You will get enough gold, equipment and most importantly: experience points!

Feel your way to the right class

When you start Lost Ark for the first time, you have five classes at your disposal:

  • Warrior
  • Martial artist
  • Cannoneer
  • Mage
  • Assassin

For now, the genders are not customizable, but that will be realized in the near future. So first of all, think about what you basically want to play: a ranged DD, a melee or more of a tank. Once you have decided on a class, you start with it and play through the tutorial.

There comes a point where you have to make another decision: In which way do you want to play the class? You have up to four options to choose from. We started with a Mage and then had the choice of playing her as a Sorceress (Range-DD) or as a Bard (Healer).

Before you decide, you can test which skill you do best with. There will be smaller mob groups or elite enemies coming at you as needed that you will need to take down. Test your way through the possibilities and only decide at the end how your journey should continue.

Lost Ark offers several ways to play a class at once.

Clever interface and gameplay shortcuts

There are a few clever shortcuts in Lost Ark that prove to be real time savers. Not all of them are worth remembering, but here are a few notable examples.

Move transparent map: Via tab, you can display the map on your screen. The advantage of this is that it doesn't open a new window, but the map lays on top of your interface and you can look through it. Since the map appears centrally and can be a bit annoying there despite its transparency, press the middle mouse button and move the map to where you want it.

Fewer windows for more clarity: A chat window, a minimap, a quest log, the action bars - this quickly clutters up the screen, which can be annoying, especially when taking screenshots or streaming. If you press Ctrl X, one window after the other disappears per key combination. If you want to display them again, press Ctrl X several times.

Instant Port: There are portals all over the map that allow you to teleport to the other end of the map or to areas you have already visited. However, you don't always have to walk to the portals, but you can also call up the transparent or correct map via Tab or M, select the portal you want to travel to, and then press Alt left mouse button. For some silver - of which you have more than enough - you can now teleport to the new location.

You can move the transparent map to the place where it bothers you the least.

Collect Mokoko seeds and think ahead

You will find them quite early in different places: the so-called Mokoko seeds. But what function do they have in Lost Ark?

At the beginning of the game, their usefulness is actually not really worth mentioning, but you should still collect every seed you find. Because the further you progress in the MMORPG, the more relevant they become for you.

There are a total of 1,209 Mokoko seeds hidden in Lost Ark, which according to the storyline were created by the giant Tortoyk. With just one sneeze, he has spread the seeds all over the world... For each area, you can see how many Mokoko seeds there are and how many of them you have already found.

You can exchange the Mokoko seeds for different items in the Mokoko village. For example, for sailors who are in your service and give bonuses. Or new cards for your squad.

Watch your squad level

Not only can you keep improving your skills, but also your squad level. At certain intervals you will gain a level and each time you will be rewarded with a bonus. For example, at the very beginning, all squad characters gain 5 in strength/dexterity/intelligence.

If you're wondering why we're talking about multiple characters here, but you're only playing with one: This means your main character as well as possible twinks. If you play a mage, but also have a warrior or assassin, those characters will benefit from the squad level as well.

Even though 5 in certain stats doesn't sound like much at first: Since there are currently 250 squad levels, quite a few bonus points will be added by then, which will add up to quite a lot.

We're only at squad level 4 - and we still have a long way to go.

Don't stress too much!

Lost Ark can be really overwhelming in terms of scope. Especially if you're new to MMORPGs. But as corny as it may sound, practice makes perfect. Especially in the first levels, the game doesn't demand too much and you can familiarize yourself with the game mechanics and your character's abilities.

You can easily master the creeps as well as the elite enemies and the first small dungeons on your own without taking much damage. You can ignore a lot of things at the beginning and deal with them at your leisure later on. Lost Ark will slowly introduce you to the different features, which will quickly make you realize: You don't need to understand everything in detail at the beginning
