Horizon Forbidden West: All Flight Recorders

In this guide to the flight recorders in Horizon Forbidden West you will learn:

  • Where to find all twelve flight recorders
  • What you need to be able to recover them all
  • What rewards await you for finding all the flight recorders

The quest to find the flight recorders in Horizon Forbidden West will come after a few hours of play, when you gain access to the Thought Grove.

There you will meet the collector Untalla, who asks you to look for them for her and promises you a reward.

Reward for the Flight Recorders in Horizon Forbidden West

Once you have accepted the quest in the conversation with Untalla, you can turn in found Flight Recorders to her at any time. It doesn't matter if you drop them off one by one or leave them all at once.

For every flight recorder you give to Untalla in Horizon Forbidden West, she will give you resources. However, you won't get the big reward until you find all the flight recorders.

When you have finally delivered all of them, you will have to talk to Untalla again to complete the quest. In return, she'll give you a legendary weapon for your arsenal, the Blaster Wings of Ten.

Requirements for finding the flight recorders

Before you head out directly to collect the following twelve flight recorders after your first conversation with Untalla in Horizon Forbidden West, here's an important hint: Some of the flight recorders are hidden behind obstacles that you can only overcome with special equipment.

Some times you have to use the vine cutter and you can only reach a plane wreck if you have the diving mask for Aloy in your inventory. However, both are easy to obtain:

  • Tendril Cutter: this tool eliminates so-called metal flowers in Horizon Forbidden West, and thus the scrub that they trigger. To get it, follow the story campaign until the main mission "Seeds of the Past".
  • Diving Mask: The diving mask, which allows Aloy to stay underwater indefinitely, also goes into your backpack as part of the main mission. Nothing stands in the way of extensive excursions into the cool water after the main mission "The Sea of Sand".

Overview of all flight recorder locations

After these introductory explanations, we don't want to keep you in suspense any longer and will now tell you where you can find the twelve flight recorders in Horizon Forbidden West.

The locations can be found on the maps, while we will give you hints in the text on how to get to the respective plane wreckage:

Flight Recorder: The Thought Grove

Since you get the task in the Thought Grove, you should take the flight recorder there first.

Climb up here so that you are on the right side of the plane. There is a hole in the fuselage under the right wing, through which Aloy can crawl. Then pry open the door to the front.

Flight Recorder: No Man's Land

Here you climb up the hill in the desert-like landscape where the plane wreckage lies.

In this case, you can easily access it by walking to the nose of the plane, which has broken away. Instead, you'll see a door that you break open and you'll have the next flight recorder in Horizon Forbidden West.

Flight Recorder: The White Watch Peaks

Here, the flight recorder lies under a pile of rubble. This time you don't have to find your way into the plane. The best way to collect this flight recorder is during the side quest "The Music in the Metal".

In the rubble there are two metal struts with anchor points for the train launcher. So hook it to the left one first and pull it away, then repeat the process for the right strut.

Flight recorder: jag depth

This flight recorder requires Aloy to go diving, so you don't need to attempt the recovery unless you have the diving mask in your inventory.

Underwater, swim to the front of the wrecked plane and pry open the door. Then dive inside the pile of metal where the flight recorder lies.

Flight Recorder: Blood Sign

This plane wreck in Horizon Forbidden West is located on, or you could say in, a mountain.

Therefore, the climb is a bit tedious if you can not fly to the top. Once there, simply break down the door and get the flight recorder.

Flight recorder: The rain path

If you want to get into this wrecked plane, you'll need the vine cutter to open the entrance.

The door inside the plane wreckage has no power. But if you turn around from it and run directly to the back, you'll see another piece of wreckage. There you use the vine cutter and take the energy cell that is hidden behind the plants.

Insert the battery into the mechanism on the left of the door and it will open.

Flight Recorder: Seat of the Guardians

At this wrecked plane in Horizon Forbidden West, a crate blocks your way to the entrance, but that's not an obstacle.

Pull the crate out of the way either by hand or with the pull-thrower and you'll stash the next flight recorder in your inventory.

Flight Recorder: Bone Bleach Air

To collect this flight recorder in Horizon Forbidden West, you'll need to power up the door again.

Therefore, from the plane wreckage, go to the right until you come to a campfire. There you will also find a supply crate - where you can refill your inventory if necessary - and to the right of it is an energy cell.

Insert it into the mechanism to the left of the deactivated door and it will open.

Flight Recorder: Island of Towers

This flight recorder in Horizon Forbidden West only requires climbing skills to get to the plane wreckage.

This one, however, is broken in two and the flight recorder is simply lying in the area between the two piles of debris.

Flight recorder: Salt bite

Here the plane wreckage lies in the middle of a small settlement, making it almost unnoticeable with all the residents, merchants and co.

In the wreckage itself, use the train launcher to pull open the ventilation shaft and climb through. Your loot is waiting in the room behind.

Flight recorder: The spur

The plane wreckage lies in the middle of a large grassy area. But while it's easy to find, you'll have to power up the door once again.

To the right of the wreckage you'll find a wing part, and there near it is the power cell you're looking for. If you don't find it right away due to the dense vegetation, activate your focus as an aid.

Insert the battery to the right of the door, open the door that is now active again and use the vine cutter in the next room to remove another obstacle.

Flight Recorder: The Still Sands

The last flight recorder in Horizon Forbidden West requires you to use the vine cutter once again to get to the door you need to pry open.

Inside, another crate blocks the way to your loot. Pull it back by hand, because it will quickly get stuck with the pull thrower.
