  • Doom Eternal - Upgrades through Guardian Crystals
  • Doom Eternal - Weapons, weapon mods and upgrades

In the new Doom remake, there are a total of ten weapons that you can improve with modifications and upgrades. Be sure to familiarize yourself with each of them, since you'll have to use all of the weapons in the new Doom remake anyway. Because the scarce ammunition is rarely enough to send the legions of demons back to hell. If you want to survive on the battlefield, you'll have to shoot, hit or throw everything in your inventory.

You'll find most of the weapons during the campaign, especially early in the game. Also, be on the lookout for mod bots, which you'll find in every mission. Interact with the hard-to-miss little robots to improve the weapons in your inventory with powerful modifications and upgrades.

Keep in mind that there is no good or bad weapon modification. Activated mods change the functionality of the weapons to be more efficient against certain demons. When choosing modifications, pay attention to variety and always consider which weapon upgrade could help you if a demon type is currently giving you problems.

Improve modifications further: All about weapon points

After you have chosen a weapon mod and activated it, you can upgrade it even further. To do this, you will need weapon points, which you will receive during the game for various combat missions. In each mission you collect a maximum of 10 weapon points from three categories. You can earn half of them by clearing all the battle arenas on a map.

Battle arenas are red areas on the AutoMap that turn green only after you have eliminated all the resident demons. You'll pick up two more weapon points by finding and mastering the two Secret Encounters hidden in each level. These are usually time challenges marked as pink areas on the AutoMap.

You will receive the last three weapon points of each level when you find and close the slayer gate. Slayer gates hide ultra difficult arena encounters that demand everything from you. You can see how many weapon points you've already collected by looking at the demonic corruption meter in the top right of the screen.

The red bars represent cleared battle arenas, purple bars represent weapon points earned for the Slayer Gate, and the pink bars count secret encounters. Once you have completed each task, the bars turn green. Be sure to collect as many weapon points as possible in each mission to upgrade your weapons in the best possible way and become a true Alpha Slayer.

All three tasks can be repeated as often as you like if you fail - and you often will! But watch out: You won't get back used resources and extra lives after a failed attempt. But the effort and the risk are worth it. After you have fully leveled up a weapon modification, you can reach the weapon mastery.

These are extremely powerful improvements. To obtain them, you must either complete the championship challenge or find a championship token.

Doom Eternal - Overview of all weapons and mods

In the following, we'll introduce you to all Doom: Eternal weapons and mods and go into detail about their strengths and weaknesses.

    Combat Shotgun

The combat shotgun is an automatic shotgun that is excellent for killing cannon fodder demons at short range. Alternatively, you use it to stagger light enemies at medium range and then perform a glory kill. You upgrade the shotgun with the following two mods:

    • The full auto mod turns the combat shotgun into an automatic weapon.
    • The Sticky Bombs weapon mod turns the gun into a grenade launcher that can fire up to five grenades. We recommend you to use this mod, as it is one of the most efficient ways to take out enemies' weak points.

    Plasma Rifle

The Plasma Rifle is a powerful machine gun that deals electricity damage that skips between enemies standing together. It is also your weapon of choice when facing demons with a shield. However, against Heavy Demons, the Plasma Rifle weakens a bit.

Use the Plasma Rifle to disable enemy energy shields!

You modify the Plasma Rifle as follows:

    • With the heat blast mod, the weapon collects energy whenever you kill an enemy. It then fires a powerful energy ball, similar to an oversized shotgun blast.
    • The microwave beam really heats up demons and makes them stagger. If you hold it long enough, your targets will even explode.

    Rocket Launcher

The rocket launcher isn't quite as fast as it was in Doom (2016), but it does a lot more damage. Be careful where you shoot it. The missiles do extremely high self-damage when they explode near the slayer. In addition, the ammunition capacity is low, so you should always use the Rocket Launcher specifically against particularly strong demons.

In addition, the following weapon upgrades are available to you:

    • Thanks to the Remote Ignition modification, you'll blast the fired missiles with a time delay.
    • With the target acquisition salvo mod you'll first target an enemy to then fire a whole salvo of missiles at him. This mod has the greatest effect against fast and robust enemies.

    Super Shotgun

The Super Shotgun looks like the shotgun in the original Doom of the nineties. At short ranges, the Super Shotgun is the most powerful weapon in Doom Eternal. However, it's extremely slow and you'll have to be so close to your opponent that you can smell their breath. The double-barreled pump shotgun only becomes special with its only modification.

The best way to take out enemy weak points is with the sticky bomb mod of the combat shotgun or with the precision bolt modification of the heavy gun

With the double-pronged Fleischerhakensamtmetal chain , you'll pull right up to the fished enemy to shred them at close range. The Butcher's Hook mod is even better for shimmying through the environment from enemy to enemy, extending your airtime and making your behavior unpredictable.

    Chain-Gun

The Chain Gun is the highest DPS weapon in Doom Eternal. It's best used to take down particularly heavy and aggressive demons like stopping the Hell Knight. You can improve them with the following upgrades:

    • The mobile gun reduces the caliber of your ammunition, so that the rate of fire increases significantly - but there is a risk of overheating.
    • The energy shield mod does what its name suggests. Whenever you shoot with the chain gun, an energy shield opens, protecting the slayer from enemy attacks. We strongly advise you to use the weapon mod, as it is one of the few defensive improvements in Doom Eternal.

    Heavy Cannon

The Heavy Cannon is a machine gun whose normal mode is best suited for staggering cannon fodder demons when you want to farm resources through glory kills. Here, too, you'll have two weapon modifications at your disposal:

    • Precision Bolt converts the machine gun into a sniper rifle. This mod is especially designed to neutralize weak points of Heavy Demons from a distance and is particularly suitable for more experienced players.

To unlock the mastery of a weapon, you need to fully improve a modification

    • Thanks to the weapon modificationMicrorockets, the Heavy Cannon shoots a lot of small missiles that do a lot of damage. However, they are hardly useful for removing weak points.

    BFG 9000

The legendary BFG is already so powerful that it doesn't need any additional mods. After you pull the trigger of the BFG 9000, it fires green nukes that level everything in your field of view. It's great for clearing the battlefield of easy enemies, leaving you to deal with the remaining heavy hunks in peace.

    Ballista

The Ballista is a mixture of a Gauss rifle, rail gun and crossbow that is best used at medium range.

    • When upgraded with the Arbalest mod, the Ballista fires explosive bolts that penetrate a demon's skin, bone, and armor before exploding. This weapon mod shows its greatest effect against flying enemies.

    • The Destroyer Blades are the second weapon mod for the Ballista. This is an energy sword that delivers a horizontal attack - similar to the Blood Strike - after a short recharge time.

    Crucible

We have only seen this powerful energy sword in the trailers for Doom Eternal. In them, however, it makes an overpowered impression and seems to penetrate even ultra-heavy demons like butter. Have you already found the rare sword? Then let us know in the comments.

    Unmakyr

The Unmaker was the ultimate weapon in Doom 64, which has made it back into the game under a slightly modified name. The Unmakyr is the best weapon in Doom Eternal. You will discover it early in the game in the Fortress of Doom. Unfortunately, you'll have to settle for greedy looks for now, as you can't unlock the Unmakyr until the endgame.

To unlock the Unmakyr you need all six sky keys!

To do this, you will need all six Sky Keys, each of which you will receive as a reward for closing a Slayer Gate. By the time you've done that, you may also learn how the new naming is related to Khan Makyr, the main villain from Doom Eternal.
