The 11 best shooters 2022 for consoles & PC

In this guide about the best shooters 2022 you will learn:

  • Which shooters are hot in 2022
  • What makes the games stand out
  • For whom the shooters are suitable

You feel like shooting, but don't know where to start? No wonder, after all, there are shooters for PC and consoles like the proverbial sand by the sea. But which ones are really worth your time? In our list, we'll introduce you to some recommended shooters that no collection should be without - including both online shooters and classic single-player games.

Halo Infinite: The first open world for the Master Chief

  • Platform: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
  • Game modes: single player, multiplayer
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: December 2021
  • Alternatives: Splitgate (for multiplayer fans), Titanfall 2 (for singleplayer lovers)

With Halo Infinite, the Master Chief celebrated his long-awaited debut on the Xbox Series X/S in December 2021. This time, you can expect a big story campaign that is all about the Chief. You'll explore the first open world in a Halo game - the Halo ring Zeta - and take on numerous exiles along the way.

The highlight of Infinite is the large sandbox, which offers you all kinds of possibilities to finish off your enemies. Do you prefer to fly into the enemy base with a banshee or sneak over the wall from behind with your new climbing hook? The decision is entirely up to you.

For multiplayer fans, Halo Infinite of course once again offers numerous game modes such as Oddball, Big Team Battle or Capture the Flag, in which you can compete with other players. The multiplayer mode is also Free2Play, so you can just try it out.

Who is Halo Infinite suitable for?

For fans of the Halo series, Infinite is of course a must. But newcomers can also have fun with the large open world in single player, even if it is difficult to follow the story without any prior knowledge.

The fast and simple multiplayer battles make Infinite one of the best multiplayer shooters currently available. No tedious loadout creation or equipment looting. It's all about shooting with cool weapons and entertaining battles. If you're looking for an uncomplicated PvP shooter that you can play for half an hour, Halo Infinite is the right choice.

Doom Eternal: Demon slaughter with the Doomguy

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia, Switch
  • Game modes: single player, multiplayer
  • Crossplay: no
  • Release: March 2020
  • Alternatives: Rage 2, Bulletstorm, Wolfenstein 2: The News Colossus

The Doom reboot from 2016 already absolutely blew countless shooter fans away with its gameplay. But id Software has actually managed to step it up a notch with the successor Doom Eternal.

Doom Eternal offers more of everything: a wider weapon selection, more upgrades, increased mobility, faster gameplay, and even more bursting demons. I especially liked that Doom Eternal encourages a continuous rotation of weapons. While you could easily play through Doom 2016 with a single weapon, you won't get far in the sequel with just your favorite lead gun.

The superficial story and the multiplayer that takes some getting used to are not worth mentioning. But you won't find a shooter that offers a more action-packed campaign than Doom Eternal at the moment. Adrenaline junkies should definitely take a look.

Who is Doom Eternal suitable for?

Do you need a constantly high adrenaline level when gaming? Then Doom Eternal is the drug of your choice. In the shooter, one gunfight follows the next and you hardly have time to breathe. But someone has to send the demons back to hell.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: How modern warfare works

  • Platform: PC, PS 4, Xbox One
  • Game modes: campaign, multiplayer, co-op
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: October 2019
  • Alternatives: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Battlefield 5

The Call of Duty series has been the top dog in the shooter genre for several years now. And rightly so, in my opinion. With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward succeeded for the first time in breaking out of the eternal cycle of World War II shooters and moving virtual war into the modern era. And that goes down well with fans.

The reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare offers you a nice overall package of an action-packed campaign, a fun multiplayer with long-term motivation and a challenging co-op mode. For me personally, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best CoD game after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Especially the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could convince me with its exciting and varied missions. And the multiplayer mode captivates me every time with its large selection of maps, different game modes and gunplay that just feels awesome.

Who is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for?

CoD veterans probably already have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in their game collection anyway. However, players who haven't had any contact with the first-person shooter series should also risk a look. Once you've warmed up to the campaign, the multiplayer won't let you go for a long time.

Fortnite: The Battle Royale king with ingenious storytelling

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Mobile
  • Game modes: multiplayer
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: July 2017
  • Alternatives: PUBG, CoD Warzone

Epic Games may not have directly invented the Battle Royale genre with Fortnite, but there's no denying that Fortnite made the genre big. Who would have thought that an everyone-versus-everyone game mode with up to 100 players would be so captivating?

Technically, Fortnite is not such an outstanding shooter, in my opinion: The game mechanics are simple, the gunplay is okay and the comic graphics are a matter of taste. But that's not the game's greatest strength.

The real strength of Fortnite lies in the excellent storytelling, the continuous content supply and the huge meta-universe that Epic Games has created. With each new season, the game has cool new features in store for players, parts of the map change, and crazy things happen all the time. I don't think any cliffhanger in a game has ever been more awesome than the end of Chapter 1, Season 10: the entire map being sucked into a black hole and players sitting cluelessly in front of black screens was really great cinema!

Who is Fortnite suitable for?

Those who feel comfortable in the Battle Royale genre will also have a lot of fun with Fortnite. But even players who don't usually play Battle Royales can get a lot out of the game. Fortnite is also suitable as a kind of social hub where you can hang out with friends, complete challenges together, or enjoy in-game events.

Gears 5: Bring the swarm to its knees together

  • Platform: Xbox One, PC
  • Game modes: single player, co-op, multiplayer
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: September 2019
  • Alternatives: Halo The Master Chief Collection, Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Run, cover, shoot, run, cover, shoot - can this be fun in the long run? You bet! The Gears of War series has proven for years that cover shooters don't have to be repetitive and boring at all. Gears 5 once again relies on the proven gameplay, but also dares to make small innovations.

Admittedly, the story of Gears 5 is a bit worn out: Mankind is at war with insect-like creatures, the so-called swarm. Our task is to kick the swarm's butt with Kait, JD, Del and Marcus. It doesn't sound that exciting at first, but it's really fun thanks to fat guns, wacky enemy design, blatantly staged action and the humorous sayings of the heroes. I also liked the open world, which is a real novelty in the Gears series. Hopefully we'll see more of it in the future.

Besides the brutal single player campaign, which you can also play in co-op, Gears 5 also offers the classic Horde and Versus modes. And don't forget to play the new Escape mode, which is really fun. There you have to detonate a bomb in a swarm building and then escape through the winding corridors of the building.

Who is Gears 5 for?

If you already own the rest of the Gears of War games, Gears 5 is a must-buy. But even newcomers to the series can have fun with the shooter, because you rarely see such brilliantly staged action in shooters.

Destiny 2: Loot and level up on alien planets

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Google Stadia
  • Game modes: multiplayer (PVP, PVE), co-op (many activities also playable solo)
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: September 2017
  • Alternatives: Division 2, Warframe

One of the best shooters of 2022 is Destiny 2? The game is already over four years old! That's true, but Destiny 2 isn't your typical multiplayer shooter either, it's more or less a shooter MMO that gets new content several times a year. A lot has happened since the release in 2017, including 15 seasons and three major expansions with Forsaken, Fortress of Shadows, and Beyond the Light.

Destiny 2 offers numerous game contents: from story content to PvE co-op missions (Strikes), PvP battles (Crucible), a mixture of PvE and PvP modes (Gambit) and the end-game raids for six players, there is something for pretty much every shooter fan. The heart of the shooter, however, is the near-perfect gunplay. No matter what you're doing in Destiny, shooting with the numerous different weapons is just fun and feels good.

The only problem is that getting into the game can quickly become overwhelming, since many game systems are not explained and you quickly lose track of what you should actually do next. However, once you have familiarized yourself with the game and perhaps found a group of players, Destiny 2 offers a very special shooter experience that has many exciting years ahead of it.

Who is Destiny 2 suitable for?

You can also just play Destiny 2 from time to time and have fun with the great gunplay. But the MMO shooter really blossoms in the endgame, when you try your hand at the raids in teams of 6 or when you explore the varied dungeons full of nasty traps.

So if you're looking for a new hobby, want to meet new people and sink hundreds of hours into a game, Destiny 2 is for you.

Rainbow Six Siege: Tactics at the highest level

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia
  • Game modes: single player, multiplayer
  • Crossplay: only PC and Stadia so far, consoles to follow in 2022
  • Release: December 2015
  • Alternatives: Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Valorant, Squad

Rainbow Six Siege is already a bit outdated, but it is still one of the most popular shooters ever. I can only recommend the game to fans of single player shooters to a limited extent. There is a campaign, but it is quite short and hardly worth mentioning. The multiplayer, on the other hand, is a real blast.

In multiplayer mode, you compete online in nerve-racking 5 vs. 5 matches. Good tactics are worth more in this shooter than skill with the weapon. Strategic planning starts with the selection of your operator, since each of them has different weapons, skills and gadgets. If you've drafted an unbalanced team, the match may be lost before it even starts.

In the match, it's then a matter of making the best use of your operators' abilities. Good communication and tactics are essential. If you act rashly, you'll often be punished quickly with death. What also distinguishes Rainbow Six Siege from many other shooters is the comparatively realistic gameplay and the destructible environment.

Who is Rainbow Six Siege suitable for?

If you love tactical shooters, but Counter Strike is too boring for you, Rainbow Six Siege is the right shooter for you. The different abilities of the operators allow for countless strategic options and invite you to experiment.

Borderlands 3: "There's no such thing as too much loot"!

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia
  • Game modes: single player, co-op
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: September 2019
  • Alternatives: Outriders, Destiny 2, Rage 2

If you like your shooters to be a little more wacky than this then you've come to the right place with Borderlands 3. In the game, you have to save the planet Pandora from the crazy Calypso twins and their cult, the "Children of the Vault".

Once you've chosen one of four characters, the wild trip can start right away: roam the lovingly animated comic worlds, solve quests, amuse yourself with the wonderfully stupid dialogs with the NPCs and collect loot - heaps of loot, almost incomprehensible amounts of loot. Borderlands 3 is the epitome of a loot shooter. If you're into looting crates, collecting weapons, and amassing stuff, Borderlands 3 is your wet dream.

Who is Borderlands 3 for?

Do you actually like role-playing games, but there isn't enough shooting in them? Then pick up Borderlands 3! The game satisfies the basic needs of every RPG fan, looting and leveling, to the fullest extent. And trying out the many wacky weapons is really fun!

Call of Duty: Warzone - A paradise for CoD lovers

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
  • Game modes: multiplayer
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: March 2020
  • Alternatives: PUBG, Firestorm (Battlefield 5)

Normally Battle Royale games are absolutely not my thing, but I have to admit that Warzone really hooked me. And not just because Warzone features the same weapons, operators, and even iconic locations from other CoD games. The battle royale shooter plays really refreshing thanks to some innovative features.

If you scrape off in Warzone, the match isn't immediately over for you. Instead, you end up in the gulag and compete in a 1vs1 against another killed. The winner gets a one-time re-entry into the match. Also, it's really fancy that I can level up the Battle Pass from Warzone in Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War as well. It's especially handy when you're tired of Battle Royale for a while.

Apart from that, Warzone offers all the features you know from other Battle Royale games: A huge map with room for up to 150 players, crossplay between all platforms, regular updates with new game content, modes and challenges, and much more.

Who is Warzone for?

If you're a Call of Duty fan, you should at least give Warzone a try. Maybe the game will grab you even if you don't like Battle Royale games in general - like me. Battle Royale addicts won't go wrong with Warzone either. Thanks to the continuous updates, you should never get bored in Warzone.

Superhot: Shooter thought completely different

  • Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
  • Game modes: Singleplayer
  • Release: February 2016
  • Alternatives: Max Payne 3, Pistol Whip

Many shooters want to captivate us with pretty polished graphics and fast-paced gameplay. Superhot takes a different tack. The game convinces with a rudimentary, but aesthetic graphic style and innovative mechanics, which make the title an insider's tip.

In Superhot you slip into a polygon character that has to finish off other polygon characters with firearms, katanas, billiard balls lying around or with bare fists. The highlight of the game is that the course of time is linked to your own movement. If you run through the level normally, your enemies will also move at a normal speed. However, if you stop, the entire action runs in slow motion.

This makes the shooter almost like a puzzle game, where you have to adapt your actions to the different speeds of time. The different levels are kept quite short and invite you to experiment with different weapons and routes.

Who is Superhot suitable for?

If you need a change from the same old shooter mechanics, Superhot is your salvation. The game has a fresh arcade feel with its short levels.

Apex Legends: Battle Royale action with heroes

  • Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
  • Game modes: multiplayer
  • Crossplay: yes
  • Release: February 2019
  • Alternatives: CoD: Warzone, Fortnite

Apex Legends came out of nowhere in early 2019. Without a promo phase, the next game from the Titanfall developers was simply released and every gamer was able to get an idea of the battle royal shooter for themselves. And Apex Legends was well received. So well, in fact, that it is still being regularly updated in 2022 and continues to attract a large player base.

What's special about Apex Legends is that at the beginning of each match, you have to choose a hero who has his or her own special abilities. For example, Mirage, who can briefly turn invisible, the medic Lifeline, who revives teammates with her healing drone, or the latest legend Ash, who ties up enemies with her bow trap.

By default, you'll go to the battlefield in teams of three, which gives you the possibility to combine hero abilities to dominate your opponents. Apex Legends also introduced the ping system, through which you'll be able to communicate with teammates quickly and easily. Other battle royale shooters, such as Fortnite and CoD: Warzone, took this as a model and also integrated similar systems.

Who is Apex Legends for?

If you are a fan of battle royale games and need a change from Warzone, PUBG and the like, then you should take a look at Apex Legends.

But players of hero shooters like Overwatch might also enjoy Apex Legends, since the different legends often create game situations that you won't find in any other Battle Royale game.
