Monster Hunter Rise greatsword: guide, combos & controls

First things first: The greatsword in Monster Hunter Rise is not for beginners. It requires precision and skill if you want to use the power of the weapon effectively. In this guide you will learn:

  • Why the area of effect is crucial
  • How to control the greatsword
  • Which silk binder attacks you have

You are still missing the overview of all weapons in Monster Hunter Rise? No problem: In our weapon guide we have listed them all briefly and crisply.

Monster Hunter Rise: Advantages and disadvantages of the greatsword

The range of the greatsword can be an advantage if you know it well. The attacks of the weapon have different ranges. You should find a training area and test the attacks one after the other, mentally saving the area of effect. This way you can better use the attacks in battle and save important milliseconds in case of doubt.

Your stamina can also have an effect on your fight with the greatsword. So always keep an eye on it and work against it with potions or food if necessary. For example, if your stamina is depleted, you won't be able to block with the greatsword.

As with most other weapons, you should also always carry a sharpening stone. With each attack, the greatsword becomes more dull - especially when blocking! So sharpen your weapon regularly so that your abilities continue to have tremendous penetrating power.

Use your skills deliberately, because you'll quickly notice that you strike very slowly with the greatsword. In a way, you have to fight with foresight. That's why it's even more important that you master the weapon's controls in your sleep.

How to control the greatsword

First, an overview of the most important buttons and what they do. Then we'll explain what happens when you combine them.

ButtonAction
XOverhead blow
AWide sweep
X AUpward stroke
A when chargingSteady
ZR in the airFalling blow
ZRBlock

Charged Slash: If you want to increase the damage you deal with the overhead slash, hold down X. You will see the greatsword charging up. If you let go at the right moment, you'll smash the weapon into the monster, wounding it significantly.

Steady: If you activate this ability, stronger attacks from the monsters won't knock you out right away.

Use combos and increase damage

If you combine the damage keys cleverly, you will increase your damage to the monsters. If you are playing with the greatsword, you should definitely internalize the following three combos.

True Charged Slash combo: Charged Slash (hold X) > Strong Charged Slash (hold left joystick X) > Strong Next Slash (A) > True Charged Slash (hold X)

If this combo is successful and you hit a weak spot on the monster, the second attack does more damage.

Forward Leap Attack Combo: Next Sweep (A) > Stand Force (A) > Next Leap Chop (A)

Immovable combo: Forward Wiper (A) > Upward Blow (X A) > Forward Wiper (A)

Here's an overview of the combos in Monster Hunter Rise.

New in Monster Hunter Rise: Silkbinder attacks

With the greatsword, you have two silk b inder attacks at your disposal. These are preset, but you can replace them with other attacks as you progress through the game.

The main attacks

Power Dispel: Silk Binder attack that you activate with ZL A. This is a quick and easy attack. This is a quick forward maneuver that you perform while holstering your weapon. It increases your attack power for a short time.

Hunting Blade: Silk binder attack that you activate with ZL X. You jump forward when you perform it. If you hit your target, you can follow it up with a charged Slash or a charged Falling Thrust.

Swap Arts on the Greatsword

Alternate arts allow you to swap rope-tying attacks. If you want, swap the Hunting Blade for Charged Diamond Strike. When you do this, you use a Rope Binder that catapults you forward so you can land a powerful charged slash. Your character steels itself in the process, so you can't take damage from the monster.

We'll add more switching arts here as soon as they're known.
