FIFA 20 release: when will the soccer simulation be released?

At E3 2019, Electronic Arts announced the release date for the new soccer simulation. According to experience, the new FIFA is released at the end of the transfer phase of the national professional leagues in late summer, and so it is also this year: FIFA 20 will officially be released on September 27, 2019.

However, you can already test the full version of FIFA 20 before the official release. If you play the soccer simulation on the PC and are an Origin Access Premier member, the download will be available from September 18. Console players can get early access via the EA Access membership.

FIFA 20: Prices and versions

Like last year, there will be three different versions of FIFA 20. The Standard Edition will be released on September 27, 2019 and costs 59.99 euros. Already three days before the official release, on September 24, the FIFA 20 Champions Edition () and the FIFA 20 Ultimate Edition will be released.

For 79.99 euros, there are up to 12 rare gold packs (1 pack per week) in the Champions Edition in addition to Early Access. If you pay 99.99 Euro for the FIFA 20 Ultimate Edition, you will get up to 24 rare Gold Packs (2 packs per week) and a Stars in Focus card for the FIFA Ultimate Team mode.

Which platforms will FIFA 20 be released for?

FIFA 20 will be released for Nintendo Switch, PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It is not yet known whether cross-play will also be possible next year, but we don't want to get our hopes up too much right away. The Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 20 is a slimmed-down version. Presumably, such a FIFA 20 variant will also be released for the last console generation, i.e. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Is there a VR function in FIFA 20?

More and more games are using the possibilities of virtual reality and thus focus on completely new gaming experiences for their fans. Also for FIFA 20, a VR mode was one of the rumors that is discussed the most, but has not been confirmed yet. In all likelihood, there will be no VR gameplay in FIFA 20 this year.

Sebastian Enrique, EA's senior producer, said that so far they haven't found anything that surpasses the experience of a controller in hand. Nevertheless, it is not excluded that virtual reality will find its way into FIFA sooner or later.

What FIFA Ultimate Team needs to improve

There is an inequality of opportunity among players in the Fifa Ultimate Team mode. Many passionate hobby players who spent weeks and months putting together a competitive team through hard work (such as trading and squad building challenges) are frustrated. This is because more and more powerful special cards and upgrades are coming onto the transfer market.

Those who spend hundreds or thousands of real-money euros on FIFA Coins to buy packs that are less likely to contain a top player are quickly at an advantage. Belgium has already put a stop to the so-called "pay-to-win" principle. Buying such packs with real money is gambling and has been banned in Belgium since January 31, 2019. The German government is also considering a possible ban.

In addition, there is the lack of transparency in EA's Ultimate Team policy. For those who have put together their competitive dream team for the FIFA Ultimate mode through fierce dedication (or by spending a lot of Euros) have once again been blindsided. Suddenly EA noticed that there was a "discrepancy between team strengths" and limited the use of icons and players with a particularly strong overall ranking for the FUT Qualifiers.

In itself a good regulation, which we also wish for FIFA 20. Better at the beginning of the season, though, before months of trying to pull every penny out of the players' pockets.

The new FIFA 20 game mode: VOLTA Football

FIFA 98 was one of the greatest soccer simulations of the 90s. Among other things, this was due to a feature that never appeared in any regular FIFA: playing indoors! For some years this mode was exclusively marketed by the FIFA offshoot "FIFA Street". Now the wait seems to be over, because in FIFA 20 the small field finds its way back into the soccer simulation.

In the new and independent VOLTA mode, you play in backyard cages or on futsal pitches. The fields vary in size, so you can play 3vs3, 4vs4, 5vs5 or professional futsal. In addition, you'll create and style your own player to trick or treat in various modes (online and offline) in FIFA Street style.

Which new FIFA 20 features are officially known?

During the first livestream EA has already revealed first details about the gameplay of FIFA 20. Although the AI will be significantly improved by the Authentic Game Flow, it will be more restrained in defense in the future. This means that it will be more important for you to defend actively, which will be a big challenge for many players. On the other hand, good defending will also be rewarded in the future.

One annoyance in FIFA 18 and FIFA 19 was that a freshly substituted striker was easily caught up by a completely exhausted defender and had the ball taken away from him. This is supposed to change in FIFA 20, so that a fast striker can sometimes outrun the defense. In addition, new ball physics should ensure that the ball and the game run more smoothly. Furthermore, free kicks and penalties have been completely redesigned.

This is the FIFA 20 roadmap until release

Because the other FIFA game modes are also longing for patches and new features. The desire for new features and functions for the career mode is especially high. Its players have been waiting for fresh updates for years. Since the focus of Electronic Arts was on FIFA Ultimate Team, the offline career mode without paid content had to do without both minor bug fixes and major innovations.

Furthermore, an update for the Pro Clubs mode will follow at the end of July, before it continues with a big live stream at the beginning of August, in which the innovations of the FIFA 20 Ultimate Team mode will be revealed. Shortly after, also in early August, there will be a Deep Dive detailing the new VOLTA mode.

If you can't wait for the FIFA 20 release, you can pass the time with the demo. You can download the 7 GB test version in a few minutes from the Playstation Store (PS4), Xbox Store (Xbox One) or Origin Store (PC). The demo includes the kick-off mode including the UEFA Champions League as well as the new VOLTA mode. Unfortunately EA did not release a demo version for the Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 20.
