FIFA 19: Formations & the best strategies for FUT

In this FIFA 19 guide about formations in FUT you will find out

  • which are the strongest form ations
  • what makes the formations
  • which formation is right for you

First of all: Formations are a matter of taste. If you prefer to play with chains of three or five in defense, then do that too. However, for most players, four defenders is just the right number to avoid being overrun - but still gives you enough offensive options.

That's why the three formations we're presenting to you today are all equipped with a four-man backline. Nobody wants to concede too many goals. You don't really know what FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) is yet? Then check out our comprehensive beginner's guide.

FUT Formations: Counterattacking with 4-2-2

4-2-2-2 is one of the formations that are also very popular with professionals. A special feature here are the two ZDMs and two ZOMs behind the double forward. This distribution allows a very pronounced counterattacking game.

Two ZOMs and ZDMs characterize the 4-2-2.

In the attack, there are also numerous play-off stations, which also work very well in the interplay. At the same time, the defense is very secure in the 4-2-2-2. With two ZDMs in front of the back line, it's very difficult for opponents to break through the middle in FUT.

Who is the formation suitable for? If you play in 4-2-2-2, you want to score goals and create offensive pressure, but you don't want to lose your defensive security. Counterattacking players in particular will do well with the formation.

FUT formations: Defensive bulwark 4-2-3-1

The formation also known as Tannenbaum resorts to three ZOMs. Here, the structured passing game in the top is therefore capitalized. Since there is only one striker in the 4-2-3-1 and there are also two ZDMs, it always takes a while before you can build up pressure in the offense.

Most of your scoring chances with this formation will come from tricky dribbles or sharp passes. The rest of the team simply takes too long to follow up. That's why you are limited in your possibilities for fast attacks.

The 4-2-3-1 promises a lot of security in the defense.

On the other hand, you'll always be defensively secure in FIFA 19 Ultimate Team. If you also choose a structured buildup, you'll have a lot of offensive strength in this formation as well.

Who is the formation suitable for? At first glance, the 4-2-3-1 is mainly for defensive specialists. The formation leaves hardly any gaps, especially in the middle, and there is always a player who can disrupt when the opponent has possession of the ball.

On the offensive side, however, you should be a bit more creative and dribble stronger to get the maximum potential out of the three ZOMs.

All-rounder 4-1-2-1-2 (2)

Tiki-Taka soccer, i.e. the fast short passing game with a lot of possession, can be realized in FIFA 19 with the 4-1-2-1-2 (2). This variation of the normal 4-1-2-1-2 is called a tight diamond. It uses two ZMs instead of a RM and a LM.

This is how the all-rounder formation looks like in FIFA 19: The 4-1-2-1-2 (2).

This fact makes your midfield very compact. With a few short passes you can quickly get across the field and start your attack. However, the strength of the formation is not the strong offense.

It is the balance that characterizes the 4-1-2-1-2 (2). You don't have two ZDMs - like in 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 - to protect the defense, but the two ZMs make up for that. At the same time, you'll quickly find yourself with five players in the opponent's penalty area and can build up a lot of pressure.

For whom is the formation suitable? Because the 4-1-2-1-2 (2) is so balanced, the formation is in principle suitable for any player. Depending on how you fill your midfield positions, the tight diamond can be defensive or offensive. Only the wing play is hardly present in the 4-1-2-1-2 (2).
