Horizon Forbidden West: Change face painting

The face painting in Horizon Forbidden West is not really a new feature, as it was already available in the predecessor Horizon Zero Dawn. However, it was only possible to decorate Aloy with it in the new game. In the new game, you can use the face paint right from the start - as long as you know how. In this guide you will learn:

  • Where you can get face paint
  • How and where to change them

Aloy has also been sent on her adventure with some new tools and skills. We'll tell you exactly what they are in our guide.

What is the purpose of face painting in Horizon Forbidden West?

Basically, face painting is nothing more than a purely cosmetic change. Aloy has different designs at her disposal, which you can switch between again and again - depending on what you feel like at the moment.

Where can I get new face paints?

You can get face paint by completing the main quest, side quests, and missions.

How and where do I change Aloy's face paint?

In Horizon Forbidden West, you'll always get face paints, but you'll never be told in the game what to do with them or where to change them. In order to apply the Cosmetics, you'll need to visit one of the following three towns: Burning Spear, Thorn March or Bulwark. There you will find a painter whom you can talk to.

Open the map and zoom far into the town. You will find a small symbol that looks like a pickaxe, but actually shows an old tattoo tool. This means that there is a painter on the spot and you can change your face paint with him.

In exchange for some shards as payment, you'll choose a new face paint, which you can even coordinate with your outfit. Depending on whether you're wearing Nora, Carja or Tenakth armor.

By the way: You can also test the face paints away from the cities by going into the photo mode. First, position Aloy so that she is facing you - you won't be able to turn her around later. Then press the Options button on your PlayStation controller and select "Photo Mode".

In the small window that now opens, you have numerous setting options - including face painting (see screenshot). Now click on your control pad to the left or right, to try out all the cosmetics available to you. Once you've found a paint job you like, you can go to the painter and apply it.

Easter Egg: Where can I find Kratos' face paint?

Yes, there is indeed a face paint that looks like Kratos' from God of War. It will appear in the painter's "Special" category when you unlock it by finding three totems. We'll explain how to do that now.

You can either accept a quest from Zokkah in Burning Spear and look for the totems, or you can bring them to him without being asked. Both is possible.

You can accept a quest from Zokkah - or you can just bring him the totems.

These three totems you have to find

  • Totem of Brotherhood
  • Totem of War
  • Totem of Youth

In the following picture gallery you can find the exact locations of the three totems:

Now all you have to do is turn in the totems to Zokkah in Burning Spear and as a reward you will receive Kratos' face paint.
