  • How long you still have to wait for The Outlast Trials
  • What features you can expect
  • What has happened in the series so far

If you've been interested in horror games in recent years, you couldn't miss the Outlast series. For those who just can't get enough of the dark story, there is now reason to rejoice. Developer studio Red Barrel Games has announced the latest game "The Outlast Trials"!

What happened in the story of Outlast and Outlast Whistleblower?

In both Outlast and Outlast Whistleblower, the story takes you to the mental institution Mount Massive. In the first part, you play as journalist Miles Upshur, who has received an anonymous tip that the Murkoff Corporation is conducting illegal human experiments there.

The suspicions are confirmed and Miles has to run the gauntlet through the asylum, where maniacs and nano-engineered psychopaths give him hell. He becomes a victim of one of the experiments himself and the game's ending leaves room for speculation.

Outlast Whistleblower puts you in the role of Waylon Park. He works for the Murkoff Coporation, but finds out about the crooked machinations and contacts Miles. With the foreknowledge from Outlast, you will find out in the course of the game that the events take place parallel to the first part.

Unlike Miles, Waylon is able to escape in the end. He has to decide whether to use the video footage as evidence to destroy the Murkoff Corporation, or to protect himself. He chooses to expose the corporation's insane attempts. Again, the ending is open-ended.

What happened next in Outlast 2?

In Outlast 2, journalist Blake Langermann tries to solve an unsolved murder case involving a pregnant woman. The autopsy of the body points to the state of Arizona and he and his wife set out.

The helicopter crashes, however, forcing Blake on a nerve-wracking trip, through a village full of crazy people. He tries to find his missing wife in the horror town of Temple Gate. What he doesn't know at this point is that the Murkoff Corporation is irradiating the area with microwaves and conducting experiments on the villagers.

Outlast 2 culminates in an insane finale with an unnatural birth and offers you different endings depending on your progress in the story.

This is how the predecessors of The Outlast Trials played out

Basically, the only option in the Outlast series () is to escape. You can't fight and are only equipped with a camcorder to document the horrific events for the outside world.

The camera helps you see better in the dark. But be careful: If you use the night vision function too much, you'll use up precious batteries. In important moments, the necessary vision is missing and chaos is preprogrammed!

Info about the story of The Outlast Trials

The story of The Outlast Trials is said to have nothing to do with its predecessors - so it's not an Outlast 3. The game would serve the same fiction, but unlike its predecessors, the new game takes you to the Cold War era.

Once again, everything will revolve around forbidden experiments turn. As part of an experiment, it's up to you to brave the hostile conditions and free yourself from captivity.

The Outlast Trials Gameplay & Release

The Outlast Trials will now offer co-op gameplay for the first time. You have the possibility to play alone or with friends through the story. With up to four players you have to find a way through several experiments.

Another hint is provided by a recently published image of the new game. It shows three people with a kind of night vision device. Possibly they will replace your old camcorder in the new game.

You'll have to wait a little longer for the release. The Outlast Trails is still in the early development phase. David Chateauneuf - senior game designer at developer Red Barrels - said that the concept phase has been completed and development has just begun.

The Red Barrels team has not yet commented on which platforms the game will be released on. However, there is not supposed to be VR support, even though the promotional poster looked strongly like it. The developers plan to announce more details in the coming months.
