Settings in Pokémon Unite: The best settings

In this guide to Pokémon Unite you will learn:

  • How to target neutral or enemy Pokémon
  • Which option makes it easier for you to escape from tricky situations
  • Why you should definitely deactivate automatic attacks

By default, the settings in Pokémon Unite are set to make it as easy as possible for beginners to get started in the MOBA. However, once you are familiar with the mechanics in Pokémon Unite, you should tweak them a bit. Optimized settings will make your life easier during matches and even improve your performance. Now you can find out which settings you should definitely adjust.

Higher frame rate for smoother gameplay

You hardly have to change anything under the "System" item in the settings, but it is worth taking a look at the "Frame Rate" option. Here you can choose between the settings Low/Low, Medium/Medium and High/High. With Low and Medium, the game runs at a fixed 30 frames per second. With the High setting, the Switch or your smartphone will try to get to 60 frames per second in Pokémon Unite.

Basically, 60 FPS offers smoother gameplay than 30 FPS. However, if there is a lot going on on the display at the moment, the frame rate can also drop below 60 frames per second faster and you will experience judder. We still recommend setting the frame rate in Pokémon Unite to High. A smoother gameplay allows you to react faster to the enemies' actions. However, the higher FPS has a disadvantage: It drains the battery of your devices much faster.

That's why we recommend using 60 FPS if you're playing on a TV with the Switch. If you're playing on a console, however, it's better to use 30 FPS to save your battery. The same applies to your smartphone: If you play with a connected charging cable or have a power outlet nearby, then you can play at 60 FPS. If you're on the go, you'd better choose 30 FPS to save the battery.

With the Switch in the dock, there is nothing against 60 FPS, but you should reset the frames to medium in handheld mode.

Target acquisition priority: How to focus on the right opponent

You probably know the situation: You have reduced an enemy's health points to almost zero and are about to deal him the death blow. Then, suddenly, one of his allies arrives, your Pokémon attacks the new enemy, and the stricken enemy escapes to the safe base. This happens when you have selected the "Shortest Distance/Closest" option in Lock-On Priority. Here, when your Pokémon attacks, it always attacks the enemy Pokémon in the closest proximity, regardless of how many Health Points it has.

Especially when pursuing weakened opponents, however, it helps to set the prioritization to "Lowest Absolute HP/Lowest Remaing HP (Value)". This way, you always focus on the Pokémon with the lowest Health.

Split attacks between two buttons

By default, the A Button on the Switch will always attack the closest or weakest Pokémon in your vicinity. Whether this is an enemy or neutral Pokémon is irrelevant. Similar to the priority of target acquisition, however, this mechanic can become a disadvantage for you. If you fight an opponent near a neutral Pokémon, your attacks may hit the neutral Pokémon and not your opponent. As a result, you take a lot of damage while your opponent loses no health.

For this reason, you should activate "Advanced Controls" in the settings under " Attack Controls". This splits your normal attacks between two buttons: Use the A button to attack enemies and the B button to attack neutral units. This way, you always focus on your desired target in battles.

Since you don't have physical buttons on your smartphone in Pokémon Unite, the touch controls are a bit different. If you activate "Advanced Control" there, asmall button with a Pokémon head appears in addition to the large attack button. You can then use the small button to attack neutral Pokémon and the large button to attack your opponents.

If you split your basic attacks between the A and B buttons, you can attack more targeted enemies or neutral Pokémon.

Automatic Standard Attacks: Be sure to turn them off!

AutomaticBasic Attacks are a tempting feature for newcomers to Pokémon Unite, as they allow your Pokémon to automatically perform Basic Attacks on nearby Pokémon, allowing you to focus on using your special abilities. However, there are several reasons to disable this feature:

  • With automatic standard attacks, you have no control over Last Hits. Attackers, all-rounders, and sprinters rely on Last Hits, and defenders and supporters should definitely give them Last Hit on neutral Pokémon on the lane (more experience). However, this only works if you use your basic attacks manually.
  • With good timing, you can steal Last Hits from your opponents with manual Basic Attacks. Just wait until your opponent has reduced the neutral Pokémon to minimum health and then use your basic attack or one of your special abilities. That way, you get the bulk of the experience, not your opponent.
  • Automatic attacks can give you away if you're hiding in tall grass for a gank.

Display boosted attacks: Timing the boost attack perfectly

All Pokémon perform a boosted attack after a certain number of normal attacks. This one is stronger and some of these attacks even inflict special effects. To avoid having to constantly count when your Pokémon performs its boosted attack, you should enable the "Boosted Attack Gauge" under Battle Details in the settings.

This will show you little boxes under your health bar that count your base attacks. If a yellow box appears, your Pokémon will perform a boosted attack during its next Basic Attack. You can now, for example, fire it specifically at your opponents or use it to steal a Last Hit.

The yellow box tells you that your next attack is boosted.

Hitting Method: Easier Scoring

Here's a little tip on how you can make your life a little easier when scoring: In the settings of Pokémon Unite under "Hit Method/Scoring Controls" select select the "Press once to score/Press button" option. This way, you only have to press the X button once instead of holding it when you deliver your Pokéballs. This eliminates the need for prolonged pressing when delivering a particularly large number of Pokéballs. On the smartphone, the controls work similarly, just with touch controls.

The best movement settings in Pokémon Unite

Correct positioning is the be-all and end-all in Pokémon Unite. To ensure that your Pokémon are in the right place at the right time, you should activate or deactivate a few features in the movement settings.

Camera Attack Tracking: On

Some of your Pokémon's abilities have such a long range that they stick out of the visible screen. This makes aiming more difficult, of course. If you activate the option "Camera Follows Moves", the camera automatically adjusts itself so that you always see the full range of your attacks on the display.

Aiming the attack follows the direction of the move: On

With a well-timed dash, you can escape from tricky situations or quickly shorten the distance between you and your target when hunting down stricken enemies. However, you shouldn't spend a long time aiming in the right direction with the Dash ability, but use it directly.

This works very well with the "Move Aim Follows Movement Direction" option. By default, your abilities will aim in the direction your Pokémon is facing. This means you'll automatically dash towards a safe base or start chasing weakened enemies in a matter of seconds.

With the Move Aim Follows Movement Direction option, you will always see in the direction of your gaze.

Attack will be aimed at the target: On or Off

The "Move Aim Snaps to Nearby Targets" setting helps you target your abilities by having your Pokémon automatically target nearby Pokémon. This option can be especially useful for beginners if they are still struggling with quick manual aiming. So if you're just getting started with Pokémon Unite, you might want to enable this aiming aid.

If you're more experienced in MOBAs or you're already very confident in Pokémon Unite, it's worth turning off this aiming aid. Because if you're unlucky, it can switch to other Pokémon at important moments, and you'll be bashing your special abilities on a neutral Pokémon instead of a stricken opponent.

Target Assist: Which is the Best?

The question of which aim assist/aim assist is best in Pokémon Unite is not easily answered. This is because, as with the "Attack is aimed at the target" option, your experience in Pokémon Unite plays an important role in choosing the general aim assist.

For beginners: Intelligent

If you're still a rank beginner in Pokémon Unite, then Intelligent/Smart Assist is the best option for you. Here, your ability's aiming device will lock onto enemy Pokémon as soon as you get close to your opponent while aiming with the right analog stick.

With Smart Assist, you'll have a very high probability of hitting your target (unless the opponent dodges with one of its abilities at lightning speed), but the aiming assist is comparatively aggressive and will sometimes lock onto a Pokémon you're not about to attack.

For advanced players: Sensitivity

The Sensitivity Assist option is similar to Smart Assist, but not quite as aggressive. Here your aiming device slows downwhen you aim near an enemy Pokémon. The aiming assist prevents you from missing your target in the heat of battle. If you've been playing Pokémon Unite for a while, you may want to switch from Intelligent to Sensitivity for more control when aiming.

For professionals: Off

If you prefer to take aiming completely into your own hands, turn the aiming assist off completely with the "Off/Assist Off" option. Since your aimer won't stick to Pokémon or slow down around them, you'll be the most flexible and fastest completely without aiming assistance. However, there's also the risk that you'll miss the mark with your skills more often than not. Professionals who, for example, want to fire skill shots in the running direction of enemy Pokémon should definitely do without the two aiming aids.

Where is the aiming aid on Android & iOS?

By the way: Android and iOS users will not yet find the aiming aids in their version of Pokémon Unite. This is due to the fact that the aiming aids are only used when playing with a controller. However, gamepads will not be supported by the game directly at the release of Pokémon Unite on smartphones. As soon as the smartphone versions of the game also support controller inputs, you should also find the aiming aids on your smartphone.
