God of War on PC: 5 Alternatives for the Waiting Period

Fighting your way through the Norse mythology with the permanently grim Kratos is a tempting prospect. However, it naturally puts a huge damper on the anticipation of many a game if the corresponding platform is missing. Of course, that can happen to you with the PlayStation 4-exclusive God of War. No PS4, no slaying with the leviathan axe.

But: From January 14, 2022, God of War can finally be played on the PC! It is the first time that a part of the series is no longer only playable on the console.

So that you can easily bridge the waiting time until then, we have selected five games for you, with which you can pass the time until the release on Xbox One or PC.

God of War on PC: The most important facts

God of War has been a PlayStation exclusive since April 2018, but PC gamers will also be able to enjoy the action adventure in 2022. As Sony announced, Kratos will make the leap from console to home computer on January 14, 2022.

You will need around 80 GB of storage space on your computer for God of War and can download the game via Steam or the Epic Store after release.

Especially owners of a powerful graphics card will get their money's worth. New features of Nvidia graphics cards like DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) are supported. Even gaming in the ultrawide format 21:9 will be possible with God of War on PC.

Darksiders

In the two already released Darksiders games, the player takes on the roles of the apocalyptic horsemen War (Darksiders) and Death (Darksiders 2), respectively, to fulfill their predetermined task in the final battle between Heaven and Hell.

In the first part, War becomes the victim of a conspiracy that earns him a 100-year imprisonment. Darksiders 2 tells Tod's story in parallel with the first part and takes place during Krieg's imprisonment. Tod doesn't believe the accusations against his brother and tries to prove his innocence.

Gameplay-wise, the Darksiders games are a mix of action-adventure and hack and slay. The protagonists jump, climb, dive, fight and shimmy their way through their respective game worlds.

The games are composed of combat sections and puzzle sequences in roughly equal parts. To get closer to their goals, both War and Death must open up new areas by solving puzzles or defeating enemies.

Darksiders is available as Warmastered Edition in a graphically and technically polished version for both Xbox One and PC, and the same applies to Darksiders 2 in Deathinitive Edition. Darksiders 3 is also scheduled to hit the market in the course of 2018. Players will then take on the role of Fury, the sister of Death and War.

Bayonetta

In Bayonetta, the player takes on the role of a witch of the same name. She has survived the witch hunts of the Middle Ages and now fights her way through a world consisting of three different dimensions with a mixture of melee and ranged attacks.

Why she's doing this? She is in search of the eyes of the world, which will help her recover her lost memories.

To do this, Bayonetta makes use of every weapon imaginable, such as a shotgun, katana and whip. In addition, there are also so-called torture attacks, in which Bayonetta catches up with her past and she also reaches for inquisition instruments like the Iron Maiden. The most powerful weapon, however, is Bayonetta's hair: it turns into huge fists, boots or even demons in quick-time events.

Bayonetta was released in this country back in 2010, but still enjoys a certain topicality: Thanks to backwards compatibility, the first part is also playable on the Xbox One and the PC version was even released in 2017.

in 2018, a port to Nintendo's current console flagship, the Nintendo Switch, followed. The sequel Bayonetta 2 is only available on the Switch and Wii U.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Venturing into the Viking underworld to fight horrific creatures for the redemption of a loved one requires a great deal of courage. For this, protagonist Senua can rely on her first-rate combat training in Hellblade.

Apart from all the action-packed fights against creatures - which are literally from hell - Senua struggles with the influence of a mental illness that partially paralyzes her with fear.

From a pure scenario point of view, Hellblade is still the most similar alternative to God of War, since Nordic, but also Celtic mythology plays a role here as well. In terms of gameplay, it is more reminiscent of the Dark Souls series or Bloodborne, but the difficulty is not nearly as high.

Initially, Hellblade was only available for the PS4 and the PC, but in the meantime, the hellish trip in the Nordic realms is also available for the Xbox One.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

If you're into vampires and werewolves, you can't miss the Castlevania series. In Lords of Shadow, main character Gabriel Belmont is on a quest to find the Guardian of the Lake. He allows him to cross the Lake of Oblivion to talk to his murdered wife Marie. From her, Gabriel learns that the Princes of Shadow are the way to redeem the world - and the souls of the deceased trapped in it.

If you've had enough of the open world, you can enjoy linear levels in the action-adventure Castlevania, which don't even make you chase over half the map to complete a task. However, this doesn't mean that the game loses any of its scope:

There are atotal of 50 levels to conquer. Central components here are both puzzle and jump'n'run passages. There are also 40 different combos for Gabriel's weapon, a cross with an extendable chain.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is available for the PC, but for consoles you'll currently have to dust off the Xbox 360. But since Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is already part of the Xbox One's backwards compatibility, there's at least a good chance that Lords of Shadow will also be made compatible for the current generation.

Ryse: Son of Rome

The action adventure Ryse: Son of Rome was one of the launch titles of the Xbox One and showed directly at the console launch what the Xbox is capable of graphically. This is not surprising, since the developer studio Crytek regularly demanded the utmost from PC graphics cards with its Crysis titles. This is no different in the very cinematic Ryse.

In Ryse, players fight as Roman Centurion Marius Titus through Celtic barbarian hordes and through Rome at the time of Emperor Nero. A certain similarity to God of War is that one or the other deity can also be seen in the plot of Ryse - but of course Roman, not Norse.

The battles in Ryse are primarily designed to control larger groups of opponents. At the same time, it's also important for the player to build up a certain rhythm and not hammer on the keys uncontrollably. At the same time, various mechanics also ensure that the combat system is accessible for beginners as well as hardcore gamers.
