Elden Ring: Unlock Rannis quest & alternate ending

The witch Ranni is one of the most important characters in Elden Ring. Accordingly, her quest is extensive and elaborate. We will show you how to solve all the mysteries surrounding the witch, get strong weapons and armor, and unlock an alternate ending for Elden Ring.

Meet Ranni and get Ghost Calling Bell

To make it to the first meeting with Ranni, you must first unlock the level up and find the Spectral Steed. How to do both in one go, you can read in our tips guide to Elden Ring. Then activate at least three Places of Mercy and teleport to the Church of Elleh in the starting area of Limgrave. The witch there will introduce herself as "Renna" and in conversation will hand you the Spirit Calling Bell, which you will need to summon the Spirit Ashes.

Meet Ranni at the Caria estate

Before you see Ranni again, you should first seek out Blaidd, the Half-Wolf (Guide) and help him with his mission. As a reward, you will receive one of the strongest swords in the game. Then travel to the Caria family estate, north of the Raya Lucaria Academy. On the access road, you'll meet Blacksmith Iji, from whom you can now improve your weapons.

Fight your way through the Caria estate, defeat the Royal Knight Loretta in the observatory and enter the "Three Sisters" area. There you will find three large towers. Enter Ranni's tower in the west and talk to the witch at the top. Her quest begins when you have talked to the three spirit incarnations of Blaidd, Iji, and Seluvis, and then talk to Ranni one more time.

Find the Fingerslayer Blade in the Eternal City of Nokron

Ranni wants you to recover the Fingerslayer Blade from the Eternal City. How to find Nokron is described in detail in the linked guide. In Nokron, fight your way to the place of mercy "Forest of the Ancestors". Then follow the directions to the Imitator's Tear Ash until you reach the cathedral. Exit through the main entrance and you'll reach the Place of Mercy "Sacred Place of Night". Follow the road north until you reach the throne with the giant motionless creature.

Some silver tears await you on the way and a giant spawns just before the stairs. The throne eventually turns out to be a building with a treasure chest containing the Fingerslayer Blade. There is a large ghost allium on top of it. Take the Fingerslayer Blade to Ranni and she will give you the Inverted Carian Statue in return.

Open Renna's Tower and Find the Snow Witch Armor Set

Enter the Carian Teaching Hall in Liurnia, the Lake Country and place the Inverted Carian Statue on the pedestal by the altar near the entrance. This will turn the entire teaching hall upside down and give you access to the Sacred Tower of Liurnia. Then return to Caria's estate and visit Renna's tower, which is now open. Climb up the first ladder in Renna's tower, turn around and open the treasure chest. Inside you will find the Snow Witch's Equipment Set.

Tiny Ranni and the Eternal City of Nokstella

At the top of Renna's Tower is a portal that teleports you to the main arm of the Isle. In front of you is the Tiny Ranni key object. Take it with you and talk to it at the place of mercy a bit further to the right. The doll remains silent for now. Try a few more times and it will surrender to your persistence. Ranni gives you another order: You are to free the isle from "ominous shadows".

Talk to the tiny Ranni at the Place of Mercy to get the next task in Ranni's quest.

Defeat Ominous Shadows and Find Darkmoon Ring

Cross the ruins and follow the tunnel until you reach Nokstella, the Eternal City. At the Place of Mercy, you can talk to Ranni again. To the west of Nokstella, you will find an elevator that will take you to the waterfall pool. Here is also a place of mercy where you can talk to Ranni. Via the cave in the southwest you will come to the Ominous Shadow, who has taken the form of Blaidd, the Half-Wolf. Defeat him and you will get the Discarded Palace Key.

Run into the building and take the elevator down. Activate the Place of Mercy on the shore of Rotten Lake so you can fast travel here later. Then return to the Raya Lucaria Academy with the Palace Key and open the treasure chest in the library where you defeated Boss Rennala earlier. Take the Dark Moon Ring from it.

Rannis Quest: How to Reach the Moonlight Altar

With the Dark Moon Ring, return to the shore of Rotten Lake. Grab the map and walk through the putrid waters towards the stone sculpture in the southwest. Stand on the platform and the switch hidden inside will lift a bridge out of the water. Run from island to island until you reach the ruins on the southern shore.

Follow the path and you will enter the Great Cloister. Cross the area and rest in the coffin by the waterfall in the south. This will lead you directly to the boss arena of Astel. Defeat the spawn of the abyss and take the elevator up at the other end of the arena. You have now reached the Moonlight Altar in Liurnia.

Find the Darkmoon Greatsword and complete Ranni's quest

Enter the Cathedral of Manus Celes and jump into the pit next to the Place of Mercy. Run through the cave until you find Ranni's body and pin the ring on her. Talk to her and after the conversation grab the Darkmoon Greatsword. Ranni's quest is actually complete with this, and you have access to one of the alternate endings of Elden Ring.

Right next to the Place of Mercy in the Cathedral of Manus Celes, you'll find a pit that leads to Ranni.

One last meeting with Blaidd and Ranni

After the quest ends, there is one last optional meeting with Ranni and Blaidd. Teleport to Ranni's tower. At the top you will now find the place of mercy "Ranni's Chamber". Rest there and talk to the tiny Ranni. At the bottom of the tower you will meet a desperate Blaidd, who will attack you immediately. Defeat him and you will get Blaidd's armor set and the Royal Greatsword.
