Overwatch: How to prepare for your first multiplayer battle

Start an A.I. match before your first game in multiplayer. It is the best way to get a first overview of the game mechanics of Overwatch. This way you'll test the characters and get used to the controls. To take a closer look at the maps, we recommend creating your own games.

You create them by clicking "Create game" in the game browser. Without other players, you'll get an overview of all the paths of the different maps and their destinations. You'll also locate the important healing packs. Each map is assigned to a different game mode.

On Assault maps, the team is divided into attack and defense squads that attack and defend specific points. On Escort maps, cargo is transported from point A to point B. Teams fight over a central control point on Control cards. The respective targets are shown to you exactly in the game.

Dare to use the quick search once you have a first overview. There are no computer-controlled players in this game mode. You will learn much more here than in games against A.I., who often march to the target bluntly united. The groups are put together according to the experience level of the players. This is Blizzard's way of ensuring that players are of similar skill and that things remain fair.

The characters have these roles in Overwatch

In Overwatch, heroes have one of three roles: Tank, Supporter, or Damage Dealer (DD for short). Tanks protect their team from damage and attacks from enemies, supporters strengthen their allies with positive effects, shields and heal their injuries. Damage dealers deal the most damage.

The role of your character influences the way you play. Supporters stay in the background and play passively most of the time. Tanks are often on the front lines, while damage dealers are a bit more flexible in their positioning. Whether you play passively or aggressively depends on many other factors besides your role and cannot be generalized.

Important tips for your battles in Overwatch

  • Communication is everything
You have three ways to communicate: text/voice chat and emotes. Controllers are not a quick way to text, so you're more likely to get kicked out of the game for being absent. So use voice chat and emotes. Emotes have to be bought and equipped in the gallery beforehand. At the latest in the rated game, voice chat is the usual way of communication. Pure listening is often enough if you are shy.
  • The rule of thumb for group setups
A game stands and falls with the distribution of the heroes. A game with six DDs rarely leads to success. The 2-2-2 formation is a good rule of thumb for a group formation. Here, two characters of each role are chosen, creating a balanced team.

  • Overwatch is a team game
Although it is actually self-explanatory, there are often players who roam the maps alone. Fighting outnumbered is often hopeless. Unless you're flanking, going it alone puts your squad at risk and lowers your chances of victory.
  • You don't damage your allies
The question of whether you damage your allies comes up regularly onthe official forums. There is no friendly fire in Overwatch, so don't hold back.
  • How to get Lootboxes
    Lootboxes
bring you great rewards. Each time you level up, you will receive a Lootbox. Arcade mode games will give you up to three boxes per week.
  • This is how leveling up works in Overwatch
The maximum level in Overwatch is level 100. If you keep leveling up, you will reach level 1 with a star. The level increase between levels 1 and 20 is a bit faster.

The best characters for beginners

In the hero selection, a difficulty level is stored in the form of stars for the characters. This indication refers more to the difficulty of using the hero's abilities correctly. The overall difficulty does not have to match this indication. For example, Reinhardt's difficulty is indicated with one star due to his simple controls.

However, it is much more difficult to choose the right position and set the correct time to protect the team.

The best support characters for beginners:

  • Mercy
  • Moira
  • Lucio

The best tank for newbies:

  • D.V.A

The best damage dealers for beginners:

  • Mei
  • Junkrat
