Apex Legends Caustic: How to set the nastiest traps

In this character guide to Apex Legends you will learn:

  • how to unlock Caustic
  • how to take over the supply ship with Caustic's gas traps
  • how to use Caustic's Ulti to escape from tricky situations

Toxic trapper Caustic is a former scientist. His findings from science make themselves felt in his abilities, such as the Noxgas Grenade or the Noxgas Traps. We'll tell you how to use them most effectively.

Unlock Caustic in Apex Legends

Caustic, like Mirage and Octane, must be unlocked with 12,000 Legends Tokens or 750 Apex Coins. That means you either have to climb 20 levels, because you get 600 Legend Tokens for each level up, or invest real money and buy Apex Coins.

The three skills of Caustic.

We will give you tips and tricks to make your investment in Caustic worthwhile.

Apex Legends Caustic - Passive Ability: Nox Vision

Caustic's passive ability "Nox-Vision" is in perfect harmony with his tactical and ultimate ability. It enables him to see enemies in his gas clouds.

Caustic's passive ability marks the enemies inside the gas cloud.

Once an enemy is in the gas of the trap or grenade, it will be highlighted in green for you. While the enemy's vision is very limited in the gas, you will be able to see the enemy perfectly and thus open fire on them.

Apex Legends Caustic - Tactic Ability: Noxgas Trap

Caustic's tactics ability lets you place gas containers that are triggered when fired upon or when an enemy gets too close to them, releasing their dangerous gas.

You have a maximum of three of these Noxgas traps available at any one time. If you place a gas trap, a new one will charge within 30 seconds. You can place a total of six tra ps at the same time; when you place the seventh trap, the gas trap that was placed first will disappear.

The gas in the traps impairs your enemies' vision, slows them down, and also deals minor damage. Your teammates will also be affected by the gas, but will not receive any damage. So set the traps wisely.

Use the noxgas traps to quickly secure the supply ship.

Noxgas traps offer you a variety of tactical options:

  1. Place the traps in front of doors and entrances to block them. You can use them to trap enemies in buildings or to buy yourself the time you need to heal.
  2. Surprise enemies with the gas by placing gas traps behind corners and ambushing them.
  3. The traps are perfect for sealing off well-visited landing zones, such as the supply ship or the bunker at the beginning of a round. Land on the ship, but go to the lower deck as soon as possible and place your traps there under the ladder and the outer openings.
  4. If you don't have a Lifeline on your team, Caustic is the perfect support replacement. While reviving your teammates, you can use the gas to shield yourself from the eyes of the enemies.
  5. If you have been knocked out and are crawling on the ground, seek shelter in your gas. Inside the gas, your opponents will not be able to perform finishers, as the permanent damage will cancel the finisher animation.
  6. You can pick up untriggered traps with a press of the Use button, replenishing your trap charge to place them again elsewhere.

Apex Legends Caustic - Ultimate Ability: Noxgas Grenade

The Noxgas Grenade envelops a large area in a cloud of toxic noxgas for 20 seconds.

It is basically just a more effective version of the traps, but can be thrown farther and has a longer cooldown. Without an ultimate accelerator, it takes 150 seconds to be ready again.

The best way to use the grenade is to smoke out buildings and lure out enemies. Likewise, use the grenade to create new cover to retreat to. Just drop the Noxgas grenade behind you and flee from your enemies with a protective wall of gas behind you.

Caustic's abilities are thus very strong especially in tight areas - like the bunker or in houses - that require close combat with shotguns or SMGs.

But beware, Caustic has the largest hitbox of all characters, along with Gibraltar and Pathfinder. That means you can get hit a little easier. However, developer Respawn is working on adjusting the hitboxes. An update in this regard should be released together with the start of the first season in March 2019. The Noxgas traps will also be strengthened.
