Civilization 6 Cheats: How to use them correctly

In this guide to Civilization 6 you will learn:

  • On which platforms the cheats work
  • How to enter cheat codes

Civilization 6 is one of the most difficult strategy games due to its complexity. This makes it especially difficult for newcomers to get started. If you want to make it a little easier for yourself in games against the AI or if you just want to have fun, you have the possibility to use cheats in Civilization 6. We'll explain exactly how this works here.

But would you rather win a fair match against the AI? These strategies will help you to win!

Civilization 6 cheats: You can cheat on these platforms

Civilization 6 is a turn-based strategy game predestined for the PC, but thanks to the well-adapted controls by developer Firaxis Games, the game can also be played comfortably on consoles. Civilization 6 is also a real strategy hit on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and even Android and iOS. However, you can only cheat in the PC version of the game. This is due to the fact that there are no official Civilization 6 cheats. However, you can still get advantages by using codes for the debug menu.

Unfortunately, you can only use cheats in the PC version of Civilization 6.

Civilization 6 cheats: How to enter the codes

As already mentioned, there are no real Civilization 6 cheats. However, you can achieve similar effects to cheats by using a so-called debug menu. Usually developers use debug menus to test certain things in the game. Through the developer console, they can use commands to give themselves invulnerability, give themselves additional resources, or reveal the entire map, for example. This makes testing much easier. Usually debug menus are no longer accessible to players in the finished game, but in Civilization 6 you can bring it back and use two powerful codes to your advantage.

Here's how to enable the debug menu in Civilization 6

  1. On your PC, go to the Civilization 6 game folder. By default, you will find it via the path "C:/User/UserAccount/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization VI". If you specified a different location during installation, navigate to that folder.
  2. In the folder, look for a file called "AppOptions.txt" and open it with a text editor. To do this, right-click on the file, select "Open with..." from the menu and click on "More apps" and select the editor there.
  3. Now a text document opens. Look there for the entry "EnableDebugMenu 0". Replace the "0" with a "1", save the change via "File > Save" and close the document.

How to use the debug menu in the game

If you now start Civilization 6, start a game against the AI and then press the "Ö" key, a black command line will open at the top of the game. This is the debug menu, where you can enter commands. However, only two commands will give you an advantage in the game: Reveal All and Explore All. Reveal All lets you reveal the entire map in Civilization 6, and Explore All marks the entire map as explored. These are still no guarantees for certain victory, but the additional information should give you a small advantage.
